Thank you friend! I never imagined that classical music could be so broad in numbers of composers, and you are showing us how vast this wonderful segment of music is, certainly the best of all.

I think Steibelt's 8th piano concerto (lost) had a choral finale. It would take a bit of picking and choosing but there should be an exploration of his music. This Harp concerto is rather good.

KD, Once again, Thank You! I've wanted to hear more of Steibelts music for a long time. I know his music has a high likelihood of being slighter than his contemporaries, but I'd like to truly hear for myself. Even if he falls short of the dark grandeur of Hummels Op. 85 & 89, he may still have composed something beautiful. I wish Hyperion would try some of his piano concertos for their RPC series. Until then, thanks again! Do you have any more Steibelt, especially featuring the harp?

Thanks for this upload. I had not heard Steibelt before now. It might interest some to know that his chief claim to notoriety nowadays concerns a run in with Beethoven during his early Vienna years. The two pianists squared off against each other in competition such as was popular in those days. Beethoven proceeded to wipe the floor with him, to the extent that Steibelt apparently departed while Beethoven played and made it a stipulation that he never again be invited to participate in any such event in which Beethoven was also invited.

It was an improvisation contest, similar to the "cutting contests" in jazz. And Beethoven made a perfect parody of Steibel. - The first notes of what Steibel had played were later used by Beethoven in the 'Eroica' (see www.classiccfm.com, "The man who challenged Beethoven"). After this incident, there were no other "musical duels" with Beethoven. Obviously, no one else wanted to commit musical suicide by challenging him.

i just looked up 1807 concert pedal harp that was apparently the first years these pedal harps were introduced to the world of clasical music. i know there is many different types of harps as there are winds, strings, pianofortes, percussions etc. I just commented to see how you could tell that it was this very single action pedal harp and also to ask if you were taught in the world of music?

This concert deserves an effort to find more works but it seems quite difficult to find other recorded pieces.

KD, I'm sorry- I just keep thinking of what lies dormant. John Thomas, Royal Harpist to Queen Victoria, wrote for harp & orchestra, as did resident-British Charles Oberthur. Chandos should explore composers from Britain, or who worked there for most of their musical lives, and who are from the Romantic Era.Do you have any music from that direction? If anyone would, it would be you!

There are many more classical-era harp concertos than 19th-century, until late, when the harps were improved, as pianos had taken over.
