Daniel Ekeroth Demonstrates Swedish Death Metal Guitar Sound
Музыка
From www.swedishdeathmetal.com, SWEDISH DEATH METAL author Daniel Ekeroth demonstrates hilarious technique for achieving the legendary Swedish death metal guitar sound, invented by Leif Cuzner of Nihilist and perfected at Studio Sunlight in Stockholm. Great clip, but the book is better than the movie!

Amp designers spend countless years engineering the perfect tone for certain genres. This dude really just cranked up a distortion pedal and said yup good enough. And that sparked one of the most influential tones in death metal.

No, you're wrong, they put a ton of though into the sound even though it's nirvana 2002's sound

@@zachiswayposi1 also you obviously don't know entombed triple tracked their guitars. They were NEVER going for the marshall sound lmfao lots of Marshalls were sitting in that studio. Derp. Epic fail. Entombeds hm2 tone, based on nirvana2002's original tone, was meticulously crafted using three different amps with different settings and blended perfectly. Slightly more than an accident . Educate yourself!!!!! Idiot

This particular pedal actually does something pretty unique, and it has nothing to do with volume or gain When the High Tone knob is cranked it spikes mids in a very special way. The pedal has very little gain or headroom actually
Since I was actually at Sunlight Studio when "Left Hand Path" was recorded, here is the truth: Uffe Cederlund played ALL rhythm guitars on that album. There are three rhythm guitar tracks. Two of them (panned left and right) use the HM2 and one in the middle use a DS1. The amp was a Peavey Bandit and the guitar was an Ibanez Destroyer with EMG pickups downtuned to B (five half notes).

This makes sense. Besides, nobody seems to mention the guitar track in the middle.

that's why its a lot chunkier than just a hm2 signal. Adds a lot of substance to the tone, and that bass and clarity the hm2 doesnt have + that lovely lovely grit. i just tried it, spot on.

0:55 Spinal Tap moment right therrrr
The riff he plays is Entombed's "Drowned", the 2nd track from the LHP album.
Just picked up the book. Excellent work. Incredibly thorough. If only there was an Ekeroth for every metal scene--someone who was 1. there 2. motivated to document the scene/time period 3. gifted with the ability to deliver this information clearly and entertainingly.
0:07 i'm always ready to start headbanging so i felt stupid when the song didn't actually start playing lol
Just to finish this once and for all. Just checked with Entombed and I was 100% right on pedals, tuning etc. However, Left Hand Path was recorded using a 30w Peavy combo (not Bandit). It then broke so from Crawl and onward a 50w Peavy Bandit was used.
I love the Phantasm cover at the end. My favorite movie since I was a kid. I have always wondered how they got that sound. to bad I sold my HM-2 years ago

There’s lots of companies who have really cool takes on HM2s nowadays. Might be worth checking out something like the Abominable Throne Torcher for a more tweak-bale take on it, or the HM-2 Cult Chainsaw if you’re looking for a 1 to 1 replica of the original
Another great way to use the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal is as a boost ( gain on the pedal around 11 O'clock in front of an amp that is on a slightly dirty channel. For example the lead channel of a 5150 with the pre amp gain set to about 5 and a half and EQ set to taste. This will get you the chainsaw tone without all the hiss and feedback that maxing out the pedal will do. You can also get a very similar tone to Rotten Sound,Bloodbath,Entombed etc. using a Boss DS-1 with the tone set at 4 o'clock and the distortion set around 11 o'clock with a Ibanez Tube Screamer used as a boost in front of the DS-1. This combo sounds crushing to say the least.
@Koraxus

Ds-1 sounds pretty good as a boost with the amp dist too I don't have a tubescreamer but I may try that with a bad monkey
My fave DM albums are of the other type of tone (scooped); "Effigy...", "Butchered at Birth" and "Harmony Corruption" but I like albums with this type of tone, too, like "Like an everflowing Stream" or "Indecent and Obscene"!
I was asked what I wanted for christmas.
I have one of these, and I absolutely fucking love it. With the right settings, a riff through this pedal will crush every bone in your body.
early Dismember and Entombed ... my favorite guitar sound ... ever
The Devil has a name and his name is Boss HM-2. The most insane guitar pedal.
but what about on the amp. How much mid, low, reverb etc. should you have to get the sound??
I've recently bought two of these (one as a backup) and have started using them as a boost through a Mesa single rec on the modern high gain channel and it's devestatingly heavy
i cant find a boss hm2 so im thinking either get the mt2 or ml2 whats better
i have a boss GT-8 lol how do i make that sound from my pedal board?
Love your book!
Is it better to use an amp with low watts or high watts? Any particular brand btw?
how does the amp have to sound with the pedal bypassed?
hey somebody knows what is the song of the ending???????????????
i need to get one of this for me :p i question for all ... the line 6 pod 2.0 can make the same stuff ?
Guitar sound can only take you so far. I'd rather people analyze how and why the old Swedish masters wrote such good songs than servilely copy the surface attributes of the music (production, down-tuning, guitar sound, vocal styles, etc.). Substance > Aesthetics

akuljah To be fair, Swedish death metal is boring compared to it's Finnish counterpart. It might be the unpopular opinion that I'm preaching here, but I'm not going to claim Swedish death metal is superior just because it sold more albums or was more internationally recognised. I suppose go listen to Rippikoulu, no it isn't doom metal, it just has a slow tempo sometimes.

yesterday i was at a concert with entombed and i was looking after the Boss HM-2 but I couldn't find it. He had lots of other pedals. Are you sure de still uses them?
are jackson guitars good for death metal? and the death metal petal?
Daniel Ekeroth. We thank you. It's a great book. We knew all your new emerging teams. However, Poland also worked underground. A bit of news was in the Polish version of Metal Hammer, a lot more in Polish zines. In Poland, if your musical trend was already noticeable. In addition to Bathory, Anti - Cimex, Nihilist, have become very poularne: Entombed, Carnage, Dismember, Unleashed, Grave, Edge of Sanity, Therion, Carbonized, Tiamat later Hypocrisy, General Surgery, At The Gates and Cemetary.
what was that song playing in the beginning
i have the BOSS Hyper Metal pedal...it looks exactly the same....all black with orange knobs....will it do the trick?!
whats the song at the end of the video?
great vid man...help me so much 🤘🤘

What's the song at the very end of the video? It sounds like a metal cover of the theme to Phantasm.

Does anybody i have ny videos of Insision? Cuz Dellsmorte and tyrant are pretty badass and i can't find insision.
what song is at the end?
Where Can I Get That Pedal =)?
Anyone know what that riff is from?
The amp Which one is it?
left hand path at the beginning, such a good intro
That riff from Drowned so badass.
you forgot about the blown-out speaker that made Dismember famous sound like through handkerchief
You can also nail this tone with a Blackstar ID TVP pretty easily. OD2 and EL84, mids and ISF at 9 o'clock and all other knobs maxed out.
@Stuckmusic1 bet you cant find that shirt anymore'' inst that the left hand path shirt its a little different then what ive seen''
Is fuzz effect good ?
This pedal really works!
enlighten us, what is 'the most famous song in the genre'?
"they've never been able to make another pedal that works" is that because this was 10 years ago? because now there's the Berhinger, Left hand wrath, Arion, Dunwich, all of which sound very similar if not the same...?
@swedisheinherjer behringer hm-300 are supposed to be near exact copies.
what pedal is this guy showing us...
@metalhead76250 Oo yes it does. Do you have the pedal yourself?

Name of the outro Melody 1:19
It's the outro, or whatever, from the song Left Hand Path on Entombed's Left Hand Path album. It's from some movie (I think), but I forgot what movie.
so thats not a Metalzone MT2, or is the model Heavy MEtal ?
I've seen this one already Dismember demonstrated their signature tone from their docu film
I play in a band like Entombed and this video, while kind of funny, is dead on accurate. Hm-2 cranked to 11. Nailed it. Behringer hm-300 will actually work too... and its only like $20 and you can get it easily.

Now this I need to remember ( Have to got those pedals somewhere ). I've been wondering how the sound is created. Now I know. Thanks for the upload \,,/ KEEP THE OLD-SCHOOL KULT ALIVE AND KILLING \m/
Did he seriously say that you can't find that pedal anymore because the members in the band dismember collect them and they have 20 each and that's the reason they are scarce?
Just bought one and it works perfectly on a tube amp and quite well on a transistor amp ! fucking killer sound !
What amp is he using?
I managed to get that sound by plugging boss ds1 (all settings maxed) and boss sd1 (small boost) to a distorted amp
Has this been censored? I can barely hear the guitar playing.
Lots of modern bands have been using this tone, Rotten Sound, Trap Them, and Black Breath for example.
Are the ones made in japan any good?
I use a LTD EC and behringer HM clone through a peavey bandit and get the same sound.
Left hand path, By Entombed. And the stuff he plays is also from Entombed, Drowned.
Bought one! (jan. 2011).Sounds amazing, better than I expected. For those that say "Nooo, the volume (the left knob) shouldn't go all out, right?", yes: the volume too goes to 11.All 4 knobs!
@WoWHeroin Entombed - Drowned from the album Left Hand Path.
As far as i know was the Canadian band SLAUGHTER which used the HM-2 Pedal for the first time, using that sound on Strappado, before Leif Cuzner/Nihilist...
is the Boss Heavy Metal even around? they dont sell those anymore do they?
@ Anton H...The exact quote is " These got you eleven"....
The genius of getting this sound is that it is fairly simple, there isn't much more to it than what he said. It's just all in the equipment, you need a Boss HM-2, and a Marshall combo with a Gibson (though I am sure any other decent guitar would work as well). Entombed on left hand path tuned to B, so I would go with that as well... but really that's it.
Are there any pedals that sounds similar to the HM-2?
@grig151
2 жыл бұрын
10 Years passed, but no. HM-2 is HM-2.
Simple and elegant :D
@DivinityOfDoom I agree completely, but the reason I only mentioned Left Hand Path is simply because people kept asking what song was what in this video. I figure that if they made it to this video, they should've already known what these classic songs were. Drowned, Left Hand Path, But Life Goes On, Morbid Devourment... Fuck I love this album!
Spot on!
I beg to differ. The Metal Zone pedal does a damn good job getting that ultra-heavy, saturated, scooped-mid sound that's perfect for death metal.
bilibom1 The song is Drowned by Entombed, of course!
alright you can either get the Heavy Metal on ebay or you can buy the Boss OD 20 Drive Zone, which is practically every (or most) of Boss' overdrive/distortion pedals in one, though it costs more of course
Entombed is a great band but At the Gates is my personal favorite Swedish band. You can't beat that Gothenburg sound
Wow, can i buy one?
The behringer hm300 is about the closest they've come to making another Boss hm2
thanks man
I really LIKE that he says that the metal zone pedal SUCKS, he says the TRUTH!
@darktimothy330 Entombed Left Hand Path, the last section which is played over the theme of Phantasm movie.

@maarakthepatient It actually is, Left hand path by entombed, The outro is actually the phatnasm theme, Left hand path made that theme quite famous :)
i think to use the HM-2 for that sound you have to put it on the crunch chanel, maybe they used a distortion pedal to have a better crunch
