Daniel Ekeroth Demonstrates Swedish Death Metal Guitar Sound

Музыка

From www.swedishdeathmetal.com, SWEDISH DEATH METAL author Daniel Ekeroth demonstrates hilarious technique for achieving the legendary Swedish death metal guitar sound, invented by Leif Cuzner of Nihilist and perfected at Studio Sunlight in Stockholm. Great clip, but the book is better than the movie!

Amp designers spend countless years engineering the perfect tone for certain genres. This dude really just cranked up a distortion pedal and said yup good enough. And that sparked one of the most influential tones in death metal.

This particular pedal actually does something pretty unique, and it has nothing to do with volume or gain When the High Tone knob is cranked it spikes mids in a very special way. The pedal has very little gain or headroom actually

Since I was actually at Sunlight Studio when "Left Hand Path" was recorded, here is the truth: Uffe Cederlund played ALL rhythm guitars on that album. There are three rhythm guitar tracks. Two of them (panned left and right) use the HM2 and one in the middle use a DS1. The amp was a Peavey Bandit and the guitar was an Ibanez Destroyer with EMG pickups downtuned to B (five half notes).

Another great way to use the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal is as a boost ( gain on the pedal around 11 O'clock in front of an amp that is on a slightly dirty channel. For example the lead channel of a 5150 with the pre amp gain set to about 5 and a half and EQ set to taste. This will get you the chainsaw tone without all the hiss and feedback that maxing out the pedal will do. You can also get a very similar tone to Rotten Sound,Bloodbath,Entombed etc. using a Boss DS-1 with the tone set at 4 o'clock and the distortion set around 11 o'clock with a Ibanez Tube Screamer used as a boost in front of the DS-1. This combo sounds crushing to say the least.

It might be the unpopular opinion that I'm preaching here, but I'm not going to claim Swedish death metal is superior just because it sold more albums or was more internationally recognised. I suppose go listen to Rippikoulu, no it isn't doom metal, it just has a slow tempo sometimes.

The genius of getting this sound is that it is fairly simple, there isn't much more to it than what he said. It's just all in the equipment, you need a Boss HM-2, and a Marshall combo with a Gibson (though I am sure any other decent guitar would work as well). Entombed on left hand path tuned to B, so I would go with that as well... but really that's it.

@WoWHeroin btw the riff he plays is from the from Entombed-drowned but in this video he plays it at a slower tempo on the record it's faster sounds badass both ways.cheers

@diabolusksk The intro music is the intro to Left Hand Path by Entombed. The bit at 1:18 is from the middle section of the same song. You need to get that album dude!
