Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway, Kentucky Overland Trail, Full Report!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We show what the DBBB offroad trail is really like. This famous trail is one of Kentucky's best off road jeep trails. The overland route takes you down back roads, dirt roads, seldom traveled 4x4 trails, and through a good number of water crossings to help wash the mud off. It also goes through the Daniel Boone National Forest. Home of some of the very best hiking trails in the Midwest. There you'll also be treated to the Red River Gorge, Nada Tunnel, Spaas Creek Road, and great camping spots.
Here's a link to the DBBB website. There you'll get many more details of the route: www.ridethedbbb.org/
Here's the official map of the Byway from CartoTracks: bit.ly/3w8vWak
We use the map in Avenza. Here's a link to the app: www.avenza.com/avenza-maps/

I loved how you highlighted the roads on the map first before showing video footage of that particular road. I can finally know which roads I may wish to avoid and why. Brilliant! cheers

Being from NJ but now live near the Big Horn National Forest in Wyoming, and having been an OTR truck driver for a couple years, I can say I miss Kentucky. If I hadn’t moved to Wyoming 14.5 years ago from NJ, I’d had gone to Kentucky. PS, thanks for the fun mountain music in the background.

I really wish I could have joined you guys. A few of us went there over Labor Day weekend last year and had a blast. Old Fincastle Road was a riot. We didn't have any trouble getting my FJ on 35's or my buddy's Tacoma on 33's over that rock but it got super gnarly and was a giant mud hole further up the trail. We got to a point where the road was washed out and completely impassable and had to turn back. On the way back, I slid down a hill we actually had to winch up and I almost rolled. Overall, that area is gorgeous. Can't wait to take another trip up there. Watching your well made video brought back a lot of memories.

Thank you for taking the time to make video of your trip, which I know wasn't easy, and for editing and uploading the video so we could all enjoy your adventure. I think I'll wait until I have a 3" lift and 33" all terrain tires instead of attempting any of that in my stock V6 4Runner, and even then, I'm not into rock crawling. I'd like to try the tamer portions on my little adventure motorcycle. Two friends and I rode the Hillbilly Triangle in the Daniel Boone National Forest last week. It's 80 miles of all paved road (Irvine-Beattyville-McKee-Irvine), but it's very scenic with lots of hills and curves. We caught the peak foliage. I think I'll edit the GoPro footage tonight and post an unlisted video to share with friends.

@@Adventure_RM - I think my 4th gen 4Runner is too nice for off road adventures. :-) If I had a 5th gen it would be very hard for me to take it down a rock strewn trail. I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Thanks for the info. If I was a young man, I'd ride the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway on a dual sport motorcycle. We're getting some rare 72 degree mid-November weather tomorrow. A friend and I are going to ride from Lexington to The Gorge to ride the Red River Rally that I bicycled in 2006. It should be a great motorcycle ride on our ADV bikes.

We do a huge bunch of wheeling in the west. There's huge rocks, steep inclines, everything that makes an offroad trip fun. Same great features Kentucky has. But, the west is missing one catalyst, water, or better yet, mud. Yup, we believe the wheeling, in general, east of the Mississippi is more challenging because of the slipping, sliding, and lack of traction.

Agreed. We ended up taking the route and manually plotting its course in Gaia.

We had a guy who harassed folks on "his road", even going so far as to block it on occasion. He ended up going to jail.

“David’s Big Boulder Beach” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 As a local who grew up running these trails I can guarantee that it has never been referred to as that. It’s just the wide spot on Devil’s creek, no name needed, everyone knows where you’re talking about. I’m guessing someone named David made the map and decided it needed a name or one of us locals just made it up to screw with whoever we had to show how to navigate these trails 😂. And the Nada Tunnel is pronounced Nay-duh.
