My situation is a little different. I have a 1965 Ford Galaxie that I just did a complete four wheel drum brake job on. Now, all four drums turn freely until you put a wheel on the hub. Then, the right front wheel becomes hard to turn. A mechanic told me in those "Old Days" that they used to put a washer over the lug before putting on the drum. That would move the drum out away from the brakes ever so slightly and allow the wheel to turn freely. I haven't tried it yet but I'm suspecting that my "Great" Chinese brake drums may not be made to tight tolerance specs and causing trouble with that one wheel.

An air wrench really defeats the purpose of getting the nut off without damaging the stud. When two metals become joined as one, keep using more P B Blaster and a regular hand ratchet and you'd likely save every stud from striping. I was more wondering about a washer on the back side of a rim that doesn't rotate exactly even on an old antique with hard to find rims to replace it with?

Last week while driving, four of five lugbolts snapped off my truck. Scary at 80 mph. I drove about a mile and got out to inspect the tires. Hub rim nearly had ALL FIVE lugnuts bore unevenly through the rim. I tried remounting it---but the holes were elongated. I ALMOST tried this. Way better to get a new rim, even if it doesn't match.

What do mechanics do in this situation when they have the wheel off the vehicle and can't safely reinstall it? Assuming the customer doesn't want to / cant afford to replace the wheel? Seems like a niche situation but probably happens more often than we'd think.

I expect its a safety-liability risk for any reputable shop. I had a small leak on the outer tread of a tire, and a reputable tire shop refused to fix it as its considered a sidewall.... Then they told me that if they did replace the tire since the other side was more than 2-3/32's difference, they would need to replace that tire as well. Again, safety reg's (NY), and they weren't yanking me around. After I declined and the service manager left, the clerk gave me a tip on a local place that would simply fix my tire for me, which I did. If I had a shop, I sure wouldn't send a customer back out with washers which could come back and bite me.

I use penny washers behind the cone lug nuts so that the cone doesn't sit in the pivot and doesn't go into the pivot, the washer becomes the pivot, and I tighter the cone to the washer flat. And also you can use them behind the wheel on the rotor to push out the wheels. .done this for years with 5*114 hub to 5*112 wheel. Plus I drilled out the 112 wheel lug hole one mm. Everything works great . For years and years .

The centering lug nuts probably pulled the wheel off center so he had to delete the centering capabilities of the lug nuts to get them on. Good thinking lol
