I lived in a city just outside Oakland. We watched as the flames came up over one of the hills - Unreal. We watched as houses burned, the news kept showing one house in the Oakland Hills was still standing - it was a beautiful Yellow (very large) house over the Caldicut Tunnel, it was a type of Landmark for all of us who commuted into the city (San Francisco). But it too was lost. A friend was in HI on vacation, when her house was lost to the fire. Everyone at the hotel (in HI) were very kind to her, they paid for her room, did what they could to ease the loss she faced. Driving through it was like driving through a place that had been bombed. All the lush green trees (it was SO pretty to drive through) was gone. The Firefighters and others - true hero's

You can only feel sorry for the emergency providers trying to help these people who have to deal with individuals like Harrison, the doctor who thought only of him, etc. In school they should train basic self-preservation classes / emergency situation training. So many people have no common sense for day to day life so forget an emergency situation.

In Australia, at least where I grew up, there is education in school and public awareness campaigns around what to do during bushfire season - listen to the radio, keep your phones charged and necessities/valuables packed in a "go bag" by the door, prepare your property well in advance and if you're going to leave, leave early. Most people who die in bushfires, die in their cars trying to flee too late

@@mariakiwi1428California isn't just a fire-prone area. It's also earthquake-prone. And when it comes to housing millions of people, contractors would rather build cheapest. Ideally, homes there would be built using material that's both flexible (for the earthquakes) and flame resistant, but any such materials are costly. Brick, tile, and concrete do resist fire quite well, but they crack easily when subjected to seismic loads. So, we use wood. At least with a wildfire, there's some warning before it hits the house. Not so with earthquakes. It's better to build for things people can't see coming.

a great deal of the mistakes made here are due to no community knowledge of smart practice. In Australia we always have fire danger season. We know ratings. We are given constant education about best practice- ie leave early, Don't stay in cars, know your evacuation areas, Have the most important papers either packed or know where they are for easy access thorughout the year and these days have apps on Emergency sites to stay informed. Stupidity doesn't earn praise and public announcements and news will rip into you if you have had obvious stupidity in disaster times- Particularly as the majority of the fireys are CFA volunteers who did not need to help. It is never perfect but it attempts to redress the uncontrollable

Most people will argue with you about the need to evacuate... I helped evac people when the Canberra fires were burning... One family was moving into their new house while watching the red and blue lights on the fire tankers fighting on a ridge above their house (within a few kilometres) , the house was surrounded by dry grass taller than 6 foot... The guy told my dad that "I will mow the grass 2moro"... Dad replied "if it's still here"... We had to move on to warn other people in more houses. I still wonder if the house is still there, if the family survived, etc

Problem: 1 little bitty fire on a hill behind a house. A small group of firemen put it out and left. They didn't even leave a fire watch. In hot dry weather, does anybody know how stupid that was? The next day, their consciences made them pay dearly for their mistake.

In it the neurosurgeon was Chinese rather than black but his story mirrors the events in this story. The cat woman story was portrayed as a woman with MS. It's a pretty good movie.
