Danger With Horses: I Knew It Was Coming But It Still Startled Me

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I can't stress enough that even at the best of times with horses they can do something that is dangerous because they are close. I took a chance with Gracie and Luke where I shouldn't have and knew it all along but ignored my instincts. A lesson to learn here!

I've been hurt several times because I wasn't paying attention to herd dynamics! None of mine would hurt me intentionally, but I've been caught between two that were having issues with each other! Literally knocked down, broke my wrist and had a horse literally go over the top of me. Somehow I didn't get stepped on! You always have to pay attention to the herd dynamics going on!

The others don't do that e. g she seems ok and friendly with another horse and suddenly screams and bucks. Only she knows what's going on in her mind! Some others do it but more softly.

In AZ when I volunteered at a horse rescue and it would start to become Kate afternoon or evening and all the manual work was done I could relax the same way. Just sit or lay down on a big wood platform we had as a outside table and some horses would just stay by standing and chilling out one leg up, it's so weirdly calming knowing these powerful animals are willing to let their gaurd down with you and just relax.

I also watch videos of the auctions where the rescue group purchase the PITIFULLY ABUSED, NEGLECTED horses. Most of the horses recover, their vet has to PUT VERY FEW OF THEM DOWN, ONLY BEING HUMANE I have great respect and admiration for all of you guys and gals ( trainers, rescuing agencies and angels 😇 who take care of the horses.😇💯 Be Blessed 🙏🏼

That is HEAVEN on earth, right there, you are so lucky! I know what it's like to trust one like that, haha, my Manni Man can be mouthy, but I have realized it's just how he explores his world, and as long as you pay attention, he mostly just lips... He will bite other people who don't see it coming, though, poor guy is very misunderstood, I wish he was actually mine and not just my lesson horse, apparently I am the only one he will canter for without spurs, and I SUCK at the canter aids, my canter seat is still a work in progress, all I can figure is that we have a relationship he doesn't have with anyone else up there, because no one else has taken the time he needs... Anyway, sorry to ramble on, you are are so very lucky, my goal is to have a rescue herd one day, if I can ever come into the money somehow! You are living the dream! Horse behaviour is fascinating, especially when they can just BE like this, I love it!💕🐎💕🐎💕

    2 жыл бұрын

Thanks for sharing a bit of your story. It's great you have a good relationship with the horse. He sounds dangerous though with the biting. There's no misunderstanding there, a horse should never bite. That said, I know why they bite... most people will make it worse but it sounds like you're making some progress there, so that's good.

I learned my lesson with herd dynamic when the youngster mare decided to piss of the older mare whilst i was brushing said older mare in their pasture. Youngling got jealous and got up in the others face, i get almost run over and kicked. After that i keep close eye on the younger one and when its not her time with the brushed i make sure to be firm and tell her not to be close til i allow it. Works great after that and havent had an incident since 😂 I like to spend time in the pasture too and just bond. But i got a lil to naive. But you learn from your mistakes.

I saw a documentary on Arabians and they said that they are super smart and super driven to be with humans. Do you find that to be the case with Gracie? I would love to see a video on each horse with a focus on their breed and personality. Also videos of the training work would be interesting. Just some ideas for videos if you are looking. Thanks for all the lovely content. 💚

I don't know about it being a breed characteristic, but I owned a Crabbet Arabian for many years, and he was very smart. A very fast learner. Sometimes I felt sure he was smarter than me. He was very energetic, but consistent as well. And he just liked to hang out with me. A true friend. I had 4 QH and 1 whose breed I couldn't figure out, as well as my Arab boy, Dan. Dan was the best horse I ever knew. But was he true to breed characteristics, or just an exceptional horse pal? I'm not sure which.

Even horses who are buddies can have disagreements. I was mending wire fencing and had my tools in a big old coffee can. I was busy, not paying enough attention, head down looking at the fence. I knew one mare was following me and didn't realize there was another some feet ahead. As I stood up, with my can the horse ahead lunged toward me after what she thought was a bucket of grain. The horse behind me apparently thought she was being attacked or was actually going to steal the grain. They both whirled around and started kicking. With me in the middle. Poor planning on my part. I was very lucky to only have a badly broken arm. And my arm had been touching my forehead. I learned never to turn my back without knowing what horse is where. Preferably never work on a project with animals in the paddock or without someone at your back. The kick that broke my arm knocked me out. Thankfully I fell under the fence and didn't get stepped on. The horses were acting like normal horses. I was the idiot who was not paying attention.

My daughters had horses growing up and now her daughters want horses. I do miss my old horse almost everyday. He's most likely not alive now. But, if it wasn't for a divorce I would of never sold him. At the time I couldn't properly care for him anymore financially. I love how you love your horses. I have. Not completely convinced. I know of the lady that started that too but I don't think it applies to all horses nor all the time.

Howdy! It's nice to hang with horses. I've been born and raised horses horses horses! So? I just came about you for the first time and you've got some nice horses and property. And so after watching my first clip of yours I thot I'd suggest something to you that has always been A Good Idea for all... Have you seen the bigger sized exercise balls used in the gyms to sit on and roll on? Etc... Some of them have a thingy to hold onto as you bounce and hop up and down? So yeh....get some of those and start hopping around in the coral and hop around the horses and see if they will chase you!!!! HA!!!! I'm just 😂 joking, lol. But I've used these balls and even put a few tether balls in arena and you'd be surprised how much fun they have. It seems like when we aren't riding or working them that they are more rambunctious than given thot of and all are different but it's a social tool too. While each horse gets curious about the different shapes and sizes and they will play amounngst themselves and have some different types of interactions with each other. I noted that the ones that never got along ended up being the most active as well as creative in what they did. And then also it helps when you have a horse that's a little skittish of things kinda come around faster an easier...an one last thing...If you've got one that just seems slow or unsociable or maybe doesn't do well as the others or one had a bad day...it's amazing to see how one will respond when you play like a kick ball and pass to the horse or walk or trot beside and keep the ball going in front as you go and some horses pick up the knack and will keep it going for awhile after you've stopped! And lite tossing to them and they learn to get to tossing back to you....just an idea or two from tried and true things FUN for you and your horses to do!!! Anyways...enjoy what your doing there and keep hanging with horses. I will keep checking back to see if you ever get to try this out! PEACE kind Soul❤️

Thanks for letting me know you're enjoying your time here, I appreciate that. Yes, the ball thing has been tried and nobody cared about it. You're probably close to the 100th person to suggest it. I'm glad it worked so well for you and your horses or in your experience. My horses like to be with each other over inanimate objects it seems.

I bet Lena is, "guarding a resource". I learned this about cats behavior and looks like Lena is jealous of all the other horses. "My human""back away". Sometimes it becomes despicable . One of my cats wanted to remind his brother that he was the alpha cat so whenever I used the bathroom, he set in the doorway to keep his brother from visiting me. The worst thing was sitting in the doorway for the litter room, so his brother couldn't use the litter. I rarely punish my cats but he got a whack for that.

Good evening Graeme I have a question for you. I just bought a 14 year old Standardbred mare and she will be coming when the majority of the ice and snow have left my property. I am very excited and nervous. I have a 14 year old Fjord who has been on her own all winter, besides us of course 😃 my question is can you please recommend a video of yours for me to watch so I can learn how to introduce them properly? Thank you so much.

just chuck them together to be honest. Make sure there is some space to move around and it'll likely work out. Horses rarely fight it out unless they are super hungry and there's one pile of food to compete on.

@@TheZklassen Well, good for them! And you! Am curious, do you ride them? Might be a couple of very special styles or gaits to ride. I used to ride a retired pacer, a bit side-rolling gait but very smooth. Graeme always has the very best advice to help us learn.
