SEBTP album was released in early Oct '73, I saw them later that same month, in Bournemouth, England. The show started with Watcher of the Skies, from Foxtrot, followed by this, and several more tracks from SEBTP, and the closer was Supper's Ready. It was over 50 years ago but I remember it like it was yesterday - the single greatest live show I ever saw. A M A Z I N G!!!!!! ❤🤩😮😃😘

He plays so well with what seems like very little effort. That's how good he was.

So glad you enjoyed this one! If you decide to dive into The Lamb, I'll definitely tune in. Another wild journey 😃

Old music is like a book of audio feelings, left behind for all to thumb through and learn how it felt to be alive back then. In this case, 1973, London, as incredible musicians accompany a mad genius, in costume, telling stories of even older times! I envy anyone who witnessed this! I had to settle for 3 years later, without Gabriel. That's ok, Gabriel solo was pretty amazing, too! ;-]

Thanks for playing this. Just raw talent, no tricks. Sadly, music of this stature is fading away into history.

The sung intro is full of nostalgia for a bygone time, 'Can you tell me where my country lies... it lies with me cried the queen of maybe, for her merchandise she traded in his prize' there's the f'ing sell out right there. The album has some politics too, for its time, an American won't get the cultural references hidden in Pete's writing. The soothing ending is totally needed as a come down after so we can catch our breath.

⁠@@L33Reacts Lee, listen to Premiata Forneria Marconi’s “Per Un Amico”. I would recommend starting with the title track, or “Appena Un Po’”. Any of those two will make you feel Italian again. And proud at that! It’s just amazing, I know you’ll love it!

As a kid I wanted to find truth and depth in their lyrics and Peter’s expressions. Now I listen closer to the depth of the separate artists coming together and I cry. Too much.

All of Phil's drumming is FIRE on every track, but early Genesis is amazing. Check out Phil in Brand X (jazz/fusion).

The 70’s were the best time to be alive and enjoying contemporary music. Progressive rock is the GOAT. I was 8 years old when I discovered Genesis, and this album was the one. It’s the soundtrack of my childhood.

Phil Collins' drumming is SO orchestral on this song! I'm guessing he wrote charts for that because, my gosh, it was so perfectly played! Plus, Steve Hackett's guitar work is so innovative and red hot! Great tapping work, well before Eddie Van Halen came along! Great, classic Prog Rock!

Yes, The Lamb should be played in its entirety. It is my favorite album and is a work of genius. Peter's story and lyrics are so clever. I hope you are able to listen to the whole album, but a little background helps to digest it. There is a cool animated version with lyrics created by a dedicated, knowledgeable Genesis fan. The album has been the subject of several PH.D. theses and there are several Web sites dedicated to it, foremost of which is the amazing The Annotated Lamb. After this masterpiece, it was inevitable that Peter would leave to explore his many interests.

Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is an amazing journey. It's best to listen to the album in its' entirety.

How can any reaction to Genesis be negative? One of the many warrens in the Genesis rabbit hole is Brand X, a jazz fusion band that Phil was a key member of for several years in the late '70s. "Euthanasia Waltz" from the live album Livestock is a great place to start. It's fun watching your reactions, which is what I must have looked like when these albums came out. Enjoy!

I saw The Lamb tour. Phil was masterful, commanded full attention when you couldn’t give it to him, because what was Mike doing? Peter! Tony, Steve! Back In NYC was beyond belief.

When you listen to songs like this, you realize how underrated Phil Collins is as a drummer.

At about this time, mid 70’s, Phil was as good as there ever was.

I just about cried when you said "nostalgic for a time I wasn't even alive for". There was so much turmoil back then and so many problems but it was truly a magical time to be young, probably because of the music. I don't know your name, but your observations are so deep. ❤

Welcome to the 1970's - where best of British rock was leading the world.

Once or twice a year I always return to seventies Genesis. In this song the drummer is holding it together nog mather what. Phil Collins was huge in the eighties as a solo artist but in fact is often overseen as a tremendous and innovative drummer. And yeah your right, this music is nostalgic in every way. The full Genesis albums are perfect escapes from modern realities. Especially at rainy sunday mornings. Their catalogue is a fantastic milestone in prog and beyond.

Phil was incredible on so many levels - amazing groove and feel - amazing complexity, accents and fills - endlessly inventive (and so young and so far back in time!!!) - but always serving the music impeccably - and then his grace notes and light touch feather-effects - just incredible, and as you say, they all are, in unity of spirit. I wonder how this could even have happened. We're so lucky to have this music. Thanks so much for the great reaction.

Peter’s a capella is such a ballsy way to start an album! Their most British album ever and such a gem. Every band member is on his a-game. You should definitely listen to ‘Lillywhite Lilly/The Waiting Room’ from The Lamd Lies Down on Broadway; the whole band just goes nuts.

Why is it that on Top ten drummers videos we see LARS ULRICH, TOMMY LEE, JOHN BONHAM and yet we rarely see uncle Phil ??? Seriously Phil is a master !!!!

The very last song on this album loops around, and a version of the riff and vocal pattern from this song, augmented is played… very cool…

There is live footage from 1973 of this song that is fantastic; I certainly recommend it. Also recommend the song "Cinema Show".

Each solo was such a wonderful display of the musicians and their instrument.

Collins also drummed with Brand X ' Nuclear Burn ' & ' Unorthodox Behavior ' he said Genesis became the money cow and Brand X was his passion

As a fan since 76 I understand how you feel. I wish I'd been more aware of music even just 4 or 5 years earlier. Genesis was among the pioneers in making exploratory music while still being somewhat accessible ..

The craziest Genesis drumming is the song "Down and Out", the timing is so far out there that it took me months of listening to it feel like I wasn't tripping over my feet. I dare anyone to dance to it lol.

The lamb was amazing. There are many live recordings of it . The Lamia song is unreal

This gave me the same sort of nostalgic feeling when I first heard it in 1973. It was the first Genesis song I ever heard, and may still be my favorite, along with Supper's Ready. I picked up this album, probably because they were being compared to Yes, which I had discovered the year before. Good times!

Nick n' Lex, (also Musicians) were at first, prior to reviewing it, conceptually against the Later, but quickly were deeply appreciative of reviewing the Illustrative Version of Lamb.

Bill Bruford played with Phil Collins and Genesis during their 1976 tour... Their drumming together was quite stunning... Only one tour... then Chester Thompson took over tour duties to play with Phil. Collins is one of the truly great drummers. He's played jazz (Brand X), prog (Genesis), heavy (played with Led Zeppelin for Live Aid show) and funk (Earth, Wind & Fire horns)... Pop (later Genesis, and the lead singer of Abba, Frida).. and avant garde (Peter Gabriel's 3rd album... which was ground-breaking). The Lamb would be a GREAT listen for you... One of the all-time great albums.

When Genesis were at their best. I was at college and Genesis my favourite.

Mike Rutherford on Bass Guitar / 12 string double neck played Moog bass pedals while nailing that strum rhythm on the 12 string, you can hear the bass guitar come in later in the track. I remember my chest resonating/vibrating to the deepest of deep bass notes from the bass synth pedals when I saw them live.

Mike Rutherford is one of the most under-rated bass players. I love his 12-string guitar and how it fills so many spaces in the music. His contributions to Genesis were foundational.

Bill Bruford played with Genesis! YES, yes he did! He toured with them after Gabriel left and Phil started singing. Bill and Phil played together with Brand X, so when they were looking for a drummer Bill volunteered. It was great but Bill decided it was not the direction he wanted to go. Phil by that time found Chester Thompson (who was with Weather Report at the time). Phil knew Chester's work from Frank Zappa (think 'Inca Roads'). Now 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' is ambitious. Phil drumming is fusion inspired. It is long, so many do the album in sections. Definitely do it, but maybe after a few more of their other great tunes. (now I need to go see what you have done so far) I'm back. You've hit some really great songs. So go ahead. But other must hears are: The Musical Box, Cinema Show, Dance on a Volcano, Squonk, (oh hell, the whole damned album is so good), Blood on the Rooftops, One for the Vine, Down and Out, ABACAB, Domino, Mama, No Son of Mine, Fading Lights for starters. LOL

They were incredible from inception up to around 1977. Gotta listen to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Dance On A Volcano, Ripples, Los Endos, Blood On The Rooftops, and these three together as they are all part of same piece Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers/In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow. Before he joined Rush, Neil Peart was a big fan of Genesis from around this time according to the man himself.

Genesis were the most overtly "English" of the great 70's prog bands, and none of their albums was more of a commentary on what it meant to be English than this one. Interestingly, their next album would be an exploration into the fantasy life of a New York Puerto Rican hoodlum!

If you like "frantic" drumming, try "Third Uncle" from an album called 801 Live. 19 year old Simon Phillips plays like the more often he hits something, the more he'll get paid!

The reaction to Britain joining what was then the European Economic Community in 1973. Loss of Sovereignty, loss of independence, loss of currency (the pound), and some very English references (Green Shield Stamps [knights of the Green Shield Stamp and shout], Father Thames, etc.) and arguments were recently reignited with Brexit. A wonderful snapshot of how us Brits tend to fuck ourselves over time and time again 😢😢😢😂 I was 3 when this was recorded and we still used the Green Shield Stamps as relics of food rationing following WW2. I’m now 53 of course, but I can vividly remember my mum using the stamps maybe in 75. This song is also reprised at the end of the album.

Thank you so much for the context. This album seems to be a cry for the england of old. The whole album has this green, glossy sheen on it that just reminds me of the meadows and wood of my homeland. But I am American. Ive always wanted to see my Saxon roots 😎

You should try Dance On A Volcano, another insane Phil Collins drum performance from a couple albums later. Probably even more intense than this one.

Even though you didn't directly connect the two, your interesting little ramble at the end of the video actually has a lot to do with the theme of the song. That's why it becomes so frantic after the introductory parts. I believe that you may have tapped into that on a subconscious level.

Phil released a lot of cheesy nonsense as a solo artist… but when he was drumming for Genesis there were few who could come close to what he did!

I wish more people would react to this one - it's such a special song. And yes, Phil's drumming is outstanding in its complexity but it fits perfectly for what's needed in the song. If you like music experimentation, then you'll love the Lamb album - it's a crazy story about a Puerto Rican in NYC that gets crazy into the metaphysical world in a way only the 70s could accomplish. My suggestions are not to get hung up too much on the lyrics and enjoy the ride - also, I suggest listening to the original audio and not the fan-made animated version that's out there on KZread because that can be very distracting on a first listen and it's not necessary at all. I've heard some KZreadrs also have copyright issues posting reactions to the album. If you haven't heard the song Dance on a Volcano, you really should - it's on the first album after Peter left and I think you will really like it. Beato also did a "what makes this song great" for this song and it's funny watching him try to count the time signature changes. Your society rants at the end are great btw 😁

Brand X was a way for Phil to fully work his jazz chops, and it featured other amazing musicians like Percy Jones on fretless bass, and the late, lamented John Goodsall (guitar) and Morris Pert (percussion). Lee - are you looking for another brilliant British drummer ? Then look no further ! From the band , Jethro Tull , the incredible Barriemore Barlow . John Bonham said B.B. was the best drummer in England. The track I recommend is called Conundrum you'll find it on the JT album Bursting Out . This is a seriously impressive instrumental featuring one of the greatest drum solo's ever recorded .

You should listen to "Fireball" by Deep Purple.

I was not a fan of them as a kid in the late 70s I was a Sabbath Rush Zep head I got in to them with Peter and am a fan for life now

It has a soothing/hypnotic effect on me. Until they go crazy, then I’m all over the place 😂 but when it’s slow I’m almost hypnotized

Try "Burning Rope" by Genesis - themed towards Carpe Diem, and a great song.

Love, love you reaction and commentary to this Genesis track. I personally would pause on the Lamb, as it is a deep Genesis cut. Genesis at their most creative, but too wordy for me, as Peter wrote all the lyrics as a concept album. The songs therefore only make sense when listened to in order. The lamb is something I would listen too when you have explored more of their more accessible back catalog first.

Well... I requested the full Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album from another reactor who did a 5h(!) video with extensive analysing and it was all blocked... It's something about that album... A bit pity that you started to take more focused notice of the drumming while one of my favourite guitar playing of all tine took place. I strongly recommend you to go back and listen (starting @2.24) with that guitar in focus 😊

There were MANY great drummers back then.. The 70's had a higher standard for music than today. If you weren't this great then you did not sell albums. We were picky. Today a lot of new music sounds like garage band music to me. The recording studios and mixing engineers were more skilled too. Who knew it would all go away someday?
