DANCE PERFORMANCE, ODISSI ON HIGH, MAY 2019, PUNE
India House Art Gallery in association with Sutra Foundation (Malaysia) and Rudrakshya Foundation (Bhubaneswar) present Odissi on High, featuring dazzling performance of dancers of Sutra Foundation and Rudrakshya. This production explores the evolution of ‘Pallavi’ (a genre in odissi repertoire) representing the two styles of the pioneer gurus of Odissi, the late Kelucharan Mahapatra and Debaprasad Das. Their approaches have been developed and enhanced by their respective star disciples, Guru Bichitrananda and Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, respectively. Ramli Ibrahim is the conceiver of this production, co-artistically directing the production with Guru Bichitrananda Swain of Rudrakshya.

This is undoubtedly the most spectacular expression of the Odissi dance form I've ever seen. Fabulous
JUST BEAUTY-FULL ... PURE SAVITRI! The Pallavi is typically an intricate pure dance section (as opposed to narrative abhinaya sections) in the classical Odissi repertory, where the usually solo dancer shows off her virtuosity through a measured sensuality that often escalates to close in a rhythmic frenzy.
I don't know about Odissi. All I can say is that it was beautifully coordinated and lovely to watch. If modern elements were brought in, it melded well. Thank you.

Should not ignore the 4000 yrs old Choreography of yester yrs masters. If ignored it is not classical dance. Classical means traditional. The choreography of yester yrs masters has devine life in the art If ignored the devinity is lost. What makes to go for the fusion and Why? I could not enjoy that much I enjoy with the traditional form. Very painful.
Ok, nicely choreographed fusion between Guru Ramli Ibrahim style of choreography and Guru Bichitrananda Swain school of choreography, but when on earth did lifts come into existence in Odissi?? You just cant merge contemporary dance moves into a 4000 years old classical dance. What is pleasing for the eyes is not always technically correct. If you have to fuse or merge modern contemporary dance moves into the oldest classical dance form of India, then it ceases to be a Classical dance form with its grammar and form intact.
