"Try not to bend the spoon, that is impossible, instead, early on try to realize the truth, _there is no spoon_ , and you'll realize it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself." I apply this sentiment to emotional experiences themselves: *Try not to change the **_emotion_** you are experiencing, instead, early on try to realize the truth, **_the emotion exist only as it's experience to you_** , and you'll realize it isn't the emotion that changes, it's your experience of it*

Would love to hear John Danaher in conversation with Josh Waitzkin. Both BJJ black belts at prestigious NY gyms, both highly intelligent, and both graduates of Columbia's Philosophy department.
He is so right. Because the stress for the competition kills your performance on stage.
And I thought I couldn't appreciate this man any further.
Sensei Danaher takes so much fro everyday life and translates it to BJJ. He is also the only traditionalist that allows Gi and No-Gi at all training sessions, side by side. Results don’t lie.
I heard Chael Sonnen telling this story on TUF, he had some great coaching moments that season. Great stuff.

I keep expecting someone to say "this is the way" when JD speaks.
This was beautiful.
So good! Fantastic teacher.
What a LEGEND. Dropping savage insight. 👏👊🤟
Wow, this man is full of wisdom👍
This is a precise description of how all training should function. "Normalizing" as much as practical, the event for which one is training.
I absolutely love this man.
👏👏👏WOW ...Love this story about the plank and perception 🙏
This is brilliant!
This man is a calm, patient genius
This is real GOLD!
I could literally listen to Danaher recite parables all day every day
Wise words as always
This is one of the things I’ve tried to adopt as a fighter.. I’ve always appreciated this..
What a combination of knowledge, personality, and delivery. Teaching is his calling.
Always love Danaher interviews
brilliant man, i love it
incredible mindset.....
This metaphor could be applied to countless different aspects of life, society & challenges everyone eventually faces just from daily living. Real chunk of gold here.
great analogy.........
This is really good, I'm stealing it! I tried to do this with myself but never realized it and put it into clear language like this.
Danaher is such an interesting, insightful and intelligent person, aside from that it’s always awesome to watch older people light up when remembering an important moment in their childhood, it’s like they’re blasted back there and their emotions show through! Strange creatures we are.
This man is one of the most awesome coaches in the world, period.
Said so beautifully.
Please Please do regularly sessions with John
He has a way of talking which just draws you in
Brilliant! The only difference is the risk - I assume with the plank very high the risk of injury or death is also high - but I love the mindset. I used to use this taking penalty shots in soccer/Futbol - I would always look away from the crowd & pretend I was at practice. Great stuff, professor...
This changed my life
The pressure is tremendous
Mind blowing.
Brilliant!
Prospective is everything
Incredible
PURE AWESOME!
This has helped me a ton in regard to competing more. I’ve got multiple comps scheduled this year now.
Danahar is a genius. Straight up.
Excellent!
Wow great advice. I will take it to heart
Brilliant! 👍
This is great
John is a great storyteller
Never speaks without thinking this fellow I’ve noticed.
Lovely!!! 👍🏽
Ohhh, Danaher is from NZ! It's all starting to make sense now.
Well, not only does the perception of the plank changes, the consequence changes as well. If you fall, you will get hurt. Just as in gym. In training, if you tap, you just slap hands and roll again. If you tap in a big match you're out.

Yeah, but it's very important to remember, that loss in competition is not the end of the world either. He talks more about mental safety net, that wil allows people to avoid additional pressure.
@Dannibalcorpse
5 жыл бұрын
both are equally valid ways to view the same event. The plank up high may have greater consequences, but if you must cross it, it might be more advantageous to see it as the same plank you cross every day. That perspective may make you more relaxed, less stiff, and therefore, less inclined to fall. The difference is that those who are successful embrace mindsets that breed success.
"Perception" is the plank in jiu jitsu - The plank is life and it's what you make of it & you fill your daily activities with what you decide what is good for your mind and body. 🙌🏽💯 We'll call it 'The Danaher Series' - 🤙🏽
I like this.
That is deep!
This man never ceases to blow my mind five ways in one.
I've been trying to tell my two young boys this about wrestling tournies. Maybe I'll try a visualization like this.
Now that I’ve noticed how he takes a sharp inhale in between sentences, I can’t not hear it
Danaher: ...is that something you’d be interested in hear... Me: YES
I remember the coach of the Dallas Cowboys doing this with his players once back in the Triplet days
interesting story!!
This guy kinda reminds me of Hannibal Lecter sometimes.

When I heard he had come from NZ I recognised him straight away - the cold, dead stare; the insidiously persuasive monotone: Former Prime Minister John Key
Yes the perception in your mind has changed and that's a major thing. But it's not just perception, circumstances have changed too. The stakes are now higher. That said, it's still the exact same walking of the plank. It's no harder than crossing it on land, only in your mind. Poignant.
thats a great parable btw... ill teach this to my kids
Legend
Esse cara é muito bom.
Brb...Moving from Ca to NYC to train under John
Danaher is so wise.
Mind blown 🤯. Gym to stage. Input gym simulation to stage,
Good voice for sleeping
We need a Danaher biopic/documentary.
Mr Danaher is a martial arts genius
John has never left the basement. Renzo made him in the blue basement and he is really a machine of BJJ....... lol
The plank parable is a good analogue for training and fighting. If you fall from a plank on the ground, nothing happens. If you fall from a plank between two buildings, you get seriously injured or die. Just like you can make a mistake in training and get away. In a match or fight you face a real chance of getting hurt and embarrassed.
0:58 John Danaher blushes as he twiddles his thumbs together "I could tell you the story of, oh nevermind. It's a long story... you wouldn't have enough time for it... unless...."
AWESOME...the same parable I saw as a kid in a TV show called kung fu ....the blind master was teaching a young student to walk over a beam and below him was steaming acid and skeletons at bottom of what seemed to be failed students... The lesson was about fear I can't remember but I'm sure the student called Kane fell in off of the beam but realised it was only warm pool water and immitaion skeletons at bottom of the pool ....the master taught Kane its fear uncontrolled fear can effect us like a magnet drawing us to.failure so we need to still the mind and treat it as if it just water same story etc awesome hearing it in dif way from Coach john
There was a video on KZread where Chael makes the same speech to guys he is coaching. I assume he got it from danaher
Chael Sonnen used this exact same story on TUF. Great analogy.
