Well, not only does the perception of the plank changes, the consequence changes as well. If you fall, you will get hurt. Just as in gym. In training, if you tap, you just slap hands and roll again. If you tap in a big match you're out.

both are equally valid ways to view the same event. The plank up high may have greater consequences, but if you must cross it, it might be more advantageous to see it as the same plank you cross every day. That perspective may make you more relaxed, less stiff, and therefore, less inclined to fall. The difference is that those who are successful embrace mindsets that breed success.

Yes the perception in your mind has changed and that's a major thing. But it's not just perception, circumstances have changed too. The stakes are now higher. That said, it's still the exact same walking of the plank. It's no harder than crossing it on land, only in your mind. Poignant.

The plank parable is a good analogue for training and fighting. If you fall from a plank on the ground, nothing happens. If you fall from a plank between two buildings, you get seriously injured or die. Just like you can make a mistake in training and get away. In a match or fight you face a real chance of getting hurt and embarrassed.

0:58 John Danaher blushes as he twiddles his thumbs together "I could tell you the story of, oh nevermind. It's a long story... you wouldn't have enough time for it... unless...."

AWESOME...the same parable I saw as a kid in a TV show called kung fu ....the blind master was teaching a young student to walk over a beam and below him was steaming acid and skeletons at bottom of what seemed to be failed students... The lesson was about fear I can't remember but I'm sure the student called Kane fell in off of the beam but realised it was only warm pool water and immitaion skeletons at bottom of the pool ....the master taught Kane its fear uncontrolled fear can effect us like a magnet drawing us to.failure so we need to still the mind and treat it as if it just water same story etc awesome hearing it in dif way from Coach john

Chael Sonnen used this exact same story on TUF. Great analogy.
