Dana 44 cross over / high steer on the square body "Decay"

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I get to install a Dana 44, crossover / high steering kit from EAST WEST OFF ROAD,
The kit cost around $189.99 from Ebay, then I purchased locally the DOM tubing, 1"ID. 1/4" wall that has an OD of 1 1/2" at about $18 per foot, expensive stuff, measure twice.
I had to prepare the top of the right-hand steering knuckle. While still in the pickup, I drill and tap the knuckle to install the right-hand steering arm. To do this swap we needed to change the steering box to a 2 wheel drive box, drop pitman arm, and build new tie rod and drag link. (Link below)

    i discovered your videos while looking for ideas for a K5 build, good stuff! gotta tell ya tho, youre going to have issues with that setup. with the drag link in the back hole youre going to lose alot of your turning radius and it puts alot of stress on the steering box. the cure for that is to either move the axle back to the original position with a zero rate block or better yet beef up the frame rail and move the steering box 1 inch foreward. Keep the videos coming these are great!

    Thank you for that information those are all great ideas. I’ve been a little worried about the setup, I haven’t been able to get it out to run it yet. However I am planning to do a hydro assist setup in the future, which I thought would help, the zero rate block and moving steering box are interesting ideas though. Thank you for watching and for sharing your thoughts and knowledge. It sucks learning the hard way 😜

    @@Farm10customs youre doing just fine. Ive been looking for info on exactly how much a 52 inch spring affects and lifts a squarebody and you had exactly what I needed. keep the vids coming on this build. youre not too far from me I hope to see it on the trail!

    I recently installed Reed Racing D44 knuckles and ORD crossover on a K5 build for a customer. Very nice and very pricey! Seen you vid and it has peaked my interest after seeing your version My only question. ORD also has a sway bar with links that bolt to the original blocks. AND Davis off Road and 4x4 has a track bar fabrication that takes the place of the sway bar function that these square bodies need. I didn’t see any provision on your project and is this anything you had considered. Just weighing options for one of my upcoming builds.

    Hey there. I don’t know if this is what you’re looking for but I believe Cross over / high steer is a great idea for the square body. I didn’t give a sway bar much thought. Because of how I was building this for, I intentionally didn’t re-install the sway bar on this however I did re-use the original upper spring plates which do have the factory sway bar mounting location. The company that I’m using is located in the pacific northwest I really do like the quality of parts and service and the price. They are only selling through eBay. I hope this is helpful for you. I don't know if it makes that much of a difference but moving the steering closer to the ball joint center should affect your leverage and make it harder to turn. Might become an issue with bigger tires and no ram assist, might not be an issue at all. Just a thought, Great videos so far!! Love the "DIY" type build.

    Yes , I totally agree. That was my exact thought as well, but with what I had to work with at this point (axle forward) forced me to do it that way, however I was planning on installing ram-assist. And you know with a locker up front and yes, the bigger tires, I don’t think that geometry issue would have made all that much difference without the ram anyway. I think a Ram is pretty much a necessity at this point. I’m going to be installing ram assist in the near future. Just trying to save up for it and replacing a broken front axle too. Grrr! It’s only money, right? Hahaha Thanks for sharing your thoughts I really do appreciate it.

    @marklivingston1479 Yes it’s coming up soon should be there by the end of the month. I really think it’s going to help override the locker steering issue. I have a few more things to attack before then, but soon. Stay tuned my friend and thanks for watching.

    Ya did good. I’m thinking after cutting the crossmember the way you had to, a frame at steering box reinforcing would be a good idea. Better safe than sorry.

  • @Farm10customs

    @Farm10customs

    Thank you, That’s a great question, With this setup on my pickup, I am going to put hydro-ram assisted steering on there which will more than compensate for the need of a stabilizer.(video to come soon). I’ve been out several times without the stabilizer and I haven’t even noticed a difference. I guess If you wanted to install a stabilizer onto that setup you could get a clamp on mount for it to mount to the tie rod, Or something like that. Thank you for your comment my friend.

    I see lots of video on crossover/high steer, but nothing that says exactly why Is this just to move the steering rods up from right in front of axle or is there more to it

  • @Farm10customs

    @Farm10customs

    22 күн бұрын

    You’re right. That’s it. Sometimes the tie rod hangs down pretty low, so yes, the high steer gives you all that clearance. The cross over was needed after I installed the lift, which seemed to be the best way to get the steering geometry all set up. I’m currently updating that setup. Stay tuned for more. Thank you for asking and for watching.

    Could you have turn the crossmember front to back and give you all the clearance you need ?? I have a 90 burb and dont have that issue maybe diffrent from your 73.

    You know I’m not sure about moving the cross member. I really considered removing it all together. I like the location of the cross member when it comes to removing the oil pan. Other than that, the years definitely could be different, but I did move the axle forward a couple inches too. That definitely affected the location of stuff under there as well. If I get the chance I will compare my location with a newer rig. Thank you my friend, I appreciate your input and thoughts.
