Dan Harris on The Power of Meditation For Fidgety Skeptics

Dan is the co-anchor of ABC News Nightline as well as the co-anchor of the weekend edition of Good Morning America. He is the author of the NYT bestseller 10% HAPPIER and his newest book is 10% HAPPIER: MEDITATION FOR FIDGETY SKEPTICS
This is a wide ranging conversation on the power of meditation to live and be a little bit happier, tailored to the skeptics and those who mistakenly believe they can't or don't need to meditate.
Enjoy!

NEW TO ME?
Hi I'm Rich Roll. I'm a vegan ultra-endurance athlete and podcaster. I write books and travel the world giving talks. But mainly I'm a dad of four. My wife Julie is much better at stuff than me. She is a yogi, musician, mom, and vegan chef & cookbook author. She makes amazing nut cheese. If you want to know more, the NY Times wrote a couple things about us:

I got a lot out of just the first five minutes before you even started. Forgetting the equipment was mandatory. This is so perfect- I used to say meditation was for idiots. After all, what do you think sleep is for? I still don't meditate, but I'm inching closer. And I was never going to be a vegan. But year after year as I got sicker and sicker, i finally began looking for anything. And now I only eat plants.

Thank you for the interview. So disappointing though when people insist on separating meditation from yoga. It IS yoga. It is one of the 8 limbs of classical yoga.. not studio western yoga. Patanjali’s 8 limbs… Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyhara, Dharana, Dhyana (state of meditation), Samadhi. I think it does matter to acknowledge the source of these precious practices, why should the references be undermined or treated as funny or trivial?

About 3 months ago completed a Meditation in the Workplace program at work. I've stuck with it because of so many benefits. I recently was in a car accident and while I wasn't exactly zen in the first 30 minutes or so after the accident I did find it easier to calm down and shift my perspective to something less stressful. Of course my wife is not happy because when she had an accident I was much more vocal with her than I was with myself at this point in my life. I tried to tell her I was still VERY...VERY disappointed in myself being in an accident, mindfulness just taught me I can better control my reaction now. She doesn't buy it.

Really interesting point how "(blank) is my meditation". It CAN be mindful meditation with intention but isn't just blindly a meditation session. I was always a little unclear of the distinction. 👍🏃

María Montessori did the silent ritual with children ages 3 to 6 as a practice to reconnect to the world around you. Unfortunately many teachers do not take this in consideration nor do the know the impact it can have in children living in a hectic work of today, and there for are suffering on anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorders at a younger and younger age. And if not treated mindfully , the child will turn into an addict and self harming because they do not have the ability to feel.

I cycle (Road) I never ride in a group because I tend to meditate whilst I am on the bike. It often happens that I will a cover large distances, without even realising it. Feels great.

I know the feeling you have and it's great, although I really don't believe it's meditation?! In reality, cycling is cycling and meditation is meditation. I mean I've heard people say "exercise is my meditation" but they have different names so it would be inaccurate to say "meditation is my exercise. I think there is a natural relationship between the two and they can both be a support for each other.

Great discussion. Lovely guy. But I didn’t like when he said the word “heart” is not allowed to be used in his meditation app ever. ???? There is a school of thought that says if you focus your meditation on your heart, it can open you up in ways you are not prepared for, so maybe that’s why? But I got the feeling it was more about dumbing it down and teaching to the masses. Hopefully I’m wrong. I’ve been studying & practicing Shamata for 4 months now and it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. The Loving Kindness meditation is a gem too. 🙏🏼💜🧘🏼‍♀️
