The great BAC 111! During landing mode, engines sang like Van McCoy Hustle intro whenever the pilot suddenly reduced throttle power! I used to burst out laughing! They went "OHOOOO!"

I was born in 2008, and started getting in to aviation about 5 years ago, so unfortunately I wasn’t around to experience the BAC-111, 737-200, 747, ETC. But eventually the aircraft we have right now will eventually fade off like these did. It’s nice to have timeless classics like this to watch so I can get a glimpse of what aviation looked like in its prime. Thank you!

I was born in '99 and feel the same about a lot of these now long-gone aircraft. My one true hurt is of course never seeing Concorde fly (that I remember anyway!)

I was born in 1986 and took for granted the MD-80's, the DC10's and the 727's. Even BAC 1-11's I wasn't too fussed about as they were regulars over my house. But now I miss these types greatly. I remember growing bored of flying on 757's every time I went on holiday now I'd give anything to fly on one again! Things go in cycles, the 787 will be a collectors item in years to come, but one thing that will never return after the early 00's is the smoke and the noise. Sadly, the gas guzzlers belong in the past.

What a f###### magnificent row these jets made. I flew on two around 1992 with Dan Air from LGW & the first was a night flight. Prob a 6000ft run up with a take off speed around 170mph. The "Jack Russell Terrier" of the sky's. Bring them back!

Love this video, takes me back to the late 60's when I would fly AA or MO BAC-111s from LGA or JFK up to BUF. Always a great flight and the sound at the back always reminded me of hearing a fighter jet take off. The aircraft now are much more tame.

Flew on Dan Air twice. 1972 Gatwick-Majorca and 1974 Gatwick-Malaga. We were supposed to fly Dan Air from Gatwick-Majorca in 1977 but ATC called a 24-hour strike, we were put up in a hotel in Brighton for the night and flew out the next day on Spantax! Don't remember the make of planes as I was too young.

That really is lovely. Thank you so much for posting! I flew London/Newcastle with DA & BA regularly during the early 1980s. BA were using new 737-200s along with older Tridents into Heathrow. DA 'mainly' flew BAC 1-11s into Gatwick.. It was not uncommon to find an HS748 allocated on the route, but nobody minded. The 90min. or so turboprop flight was always pleasant and Dan Air cabin staff were great. Cruising altitude in the 748 was a mere 14,000 ft.

RR speys are unique class engines. But i think that are "bypass turbojet" engines, turbofans normally have one or two stages of lower pressure compressors bigger than the others to act as propellers, so these engines has the classic "humming" sound at full power. But the speys have all the low pressure compressor acting as a propeller with a low-bypass to send air to the next compressor, so that only allows a small "hum" at full power. But, SOUNDS LIKE GOD :D

@hargohargo2 Reason they reduce power on the engines shortly after take-off is to restrict the spped of the aircraft (usually to around 250knt under 8000ft) and also if they were kept at full power for much longer they would simply explode!

The planes back then had better power to weight ratios and yet notice how the takeoff has a much shallower angle of attack. These days they climb very steeply to clear the crowded airspace as fast as possible.

@greengoblin200 The 111 did not have great short field takeoff performance at high gross weight. Additionally no leading edge slats for extra lift and lower takeoff speeds hence the long takeoff roll. In this video perhaps it was a high temperature and I bet also calm wind. These also go against your takeoff performance.
