Mwahahahahahaha! I love this video. I hope you'll enjoy it, Mike. I loved the entire trilogy, and the quality continues to escalate as the series progressed imo. Honestly it's more of its own thing (different than WoT; more like Sanderson's, well not a surprise because he indeed wrote this trilogy because of reading Mistborn trilogy) since the second half of the first book. Anyway, Islington somehow managed to magnificently wrap up every plot points, which is freaking insane because there were a LOT of things to resolve within three books! Enjoy!

Licanius definitely doesn't have the fluff, which at times made me think "there is no way all these events would happen one after another". It was lacking some breaks for me. But in the end I absolutely loved both books 1 and 2. I still have to finish the 3rd one. My husband loves the WoT and he enjoyed the Licanius Trilogy tremendously!

Yeah, that's the downfall of fast-paced books is they don't tell you how much time is passing between events. That was my only criticism of Faithful and the Fallen. Each chapter needs a date/time or something to signify these events aren't happening minute by minute.

I enjoyed each book and the series as a whole. It is not without flaws, but a good story with a great ending. Take the negative and soso reviews from those readers who finished only the first book with a grain of salt. When you see how things from the earlier books are tied together later in the series, many complaints/concerns/questions are addressed very well, at least in my opinion.

I like to savor more than devour because when a series is finally over I can't look forward to it anymore. Rereading isn't fun for me because the surprise is gone. @@mikesbookreviews Personally, as a whole, I preferred the novels to the short stories, though that seems to be an unpopular opinion nowadays. I never got the complaint that Geralt is relegated to a background character, as he doesn't really lose prominence in the saga. Sapkowski's focus has just become wider, now having two protagonists to juggle instead of one and choosing to build on the lore of his world (some of the best chapters of the books don't revolve around Geralt or Ciri). It may be upsetting if you just wanted to read about Geralt and his monster hunts alone, but it's ultimately a more complex and rewarding experience, as it explores the politics, morality and characters of the world in a more interesting and thought provoking way than the short stories. Regardless, Geralt gets plenty to do in the next three books.

Hey there Mike. I know exactly how you feel. I am currently jumping between listening to Traitors Blade, Son of a Witch by Gregory MaGuire, and the Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan. You have done a great job of making me want to jump into the James Islington series now too. I have no idea when I am going to get to John Gwynnes books too.

Hey Mike, I just started this trilogy too but on audio narrated by Michael Kramer. I think that narration is what's giving me so many WoT vibes but the series also borrows a few similar elements. I did feel like the first bit was sort of a slog but about half way through there is an interesting twist that reminded me a bit of Magician's Appretice

The second one was much better, the characters felt more realistic. I haven’t finished the third one yet trying to complete oathbringer before rhythm of war is released but, I do look forward to finishing the trilogy.

I picked up the first Licanius as a Daily Deal. The blurb looked interesting and the price was right. I never realized that it was compared to WoT until after reading it and I honestly don't see why they're compared - maybe because a lot of epic fantasy gets compared to WoT. WoT is one of my two favorite series, but my feelings of meh-ness for the first Licanius have nothing to do with that. It was alright, but not good enough for me to rush to the second one and with so many phenomenal books on my TBR, I'm not sure when I'll get around to it. And tbh, if I don't get to it, I'm fine with that.

I am 16 chapters in this book and because I'm listening on audiobook I don't know how many pages I'm in but so far my thoughts are...not so positive, but nonetheless lemme tell you my thoughts of the book( so far): So first the characters: I would say that so far as I know there are three main characters ( a girl and 2 boys) and I think they are interesting and have a lot of potential. The girl is stuck in a very tricky situation ( spoilers: basically her powers are taken away by that guy and I'm excited to see if she will ever get these powers back or not. Because if she doesn't she as a main character is at a disadvantage and I want to see how she will handle this loss and what direction will she take after getting over her loss. So far she is acting pretty neutral about her loss but it may affect her more when I suppose the main plot starts moving on i suppose) or if she does, how will the author make that satisfying and not just a cheesy cop out). Now the boys: so ill be just plainly honest the most main guy, Davian is kinda...boring. his powers are introduced but thats about it for him. His friend i feel like maybe a layered character and I hope he is ( even though i have been warned that the characters in this novel are plain but...well here's hoping I feel differently) Now plot: the plot so far is pretty formulaic, its fine I suppose, but if there's one thing I noticed its that I find myself never really WANTING to pick this book up. It seems as a chore so actually I'm taking a break from it( not dnfing it, but instead I'm listening to Stormfront( unrelated but the narrator of Dresden files is great!)and once I'm done ill come back to this book) We did just recently get introduced to 2 more characters and I want to know them a little more so atleast there's that. Magic system: I don't have a lot to say alot here as well, because so far the magic system seems super soft but the characters talk about it as if it's hard, I have also heard that eventually we do get to understand the magic as a whole as the book progresses. So thats something I'm looking forward to. Comparison: lot of people compare it to WOT i can't really do that because I myself am only on the second book( the great hunt) and same goes for comparing it to Sanderson and again I've only read the Skyward book 1 and 2 and WOK book 1 part 1 so maybe when ill be done with these massive series I may compare THEN 😅 HOWEVER I will try to atleast see myself through the ending because I've heard this book has a great ending and I am all for great endings!!! Haha that's a big comment and may yet get bigger if I keep updating my journey but...oh well🤣😅 So its 28th of September 2020, and I thought I'd dnfed this book after reading 15 ch but I didn't have any other book on audible so I guess I gave it a second go: I am now 19 chapters(not alot of progression but its something) and oh SPOILERS! So anyway we just got to know that Wirr is a prince, and this is a trope that tends to bother people but in this case it didn't bother me(which is a good thing) and I like that the author does not keep you hanging after ending a chapter with an open ending. So I wasn't like ohhhhh I want to skip this chapter. So thats good. We are also introduced to Cadon i believe and i think he's interesting. By his attitude he looks innocent but....i dunno. I don't know if I should trust him because when he gets his memories restored he may turn out to be a...not do good guy. And honestly a part of me hopes that that will happen. Cause I know he's a main character so hopefully the author has something grand in stock for him.

I’ve read the first two books in this series, and have found it to be reasonably enjoyable. I do think the WoT comparison is quite apt actually, in much the same way (but to a slightly greater extent) that Sanderson’s work is comparable to WoT. I think this is mostly due to the writing style that they all share, with the archetype Jordan being the superior realization of the style (understandably). Another big similarity between the three is the broad style of magic, “harness external power which can be used in these specific ways”, though with slight variations in “hardness”.

Not giving up though as it was also a big bowl of ice cream & chocolate kind of day, think I just needed the comfort of a character that I did care about.

I was a big fan of the Licanius trilogy! I think it has some significant flaws but also some great strengths. I see how the flaws are too much for others, but I didn't mind them as much. There's only one aspect of the story thats comparable to the WOT really.... other than that i think its a special series, i really enjoyed it. Totally worth the anguish of upsetting your TBR. I liked the classic feel to the book, but its much darker than you think... JI is not afraid to have his characters suffer in ways that are truly horrific, A character called Asha is a perfect example....You might find the second book a lengthy one to read, its not a novel that you can just breeze through, get that note pad out, theres a lot of information to take in with different time lines. I'm yet to read the third novel, but im very excited, but its a shame it took so long for it to hit UK bookstores. Id rate it 4 .5 for the first, then 4 stars for the second!
