Dame Edna Everage & Madge appearance (Comic Relief, 1997)

Comic Relief: Close Encounters of the Furred Kind, 14/03/1997 - the Dame's hour of the usual Comic Relief jollity (with all the appeals cut out), and Madge sings and dances along to Andrew Lloyd Webber...!

Emily Perry (who played Madge Allsop) was 90 years old by this time. She was born 1907!

OMG, this man was busy! He never stopped and always entertained the world. There's no one else like him! Rest and love in peace, Barry Humphries.

Emily Perry was 90 here and yet as sprightly as someone half her age! She must be a professional stunt woman to fall down the stairs like that and then spring back up!

Dame Edna is wonderful! The dance Emily Perry did was just adorable and she was cute as a bug, I had to replay her dance three times.

That second outfit of hers she wore in Dame Edna's Neighbour Hood Watch Episode Elaine's Home, one of the best eps in that series.

Did you all realize that Madge is dancing in a way that was very popular in the early 1930s. Joan Crawford danced like that. I love it! :-)

Emily Perry was a bit of an all-round entertainer, and according to her obituaries, was on the stage from the 1910s. I was pleased she had her chance to shine here. Always loved her :)

How disrespectful was Geri though? Her and Mel B are common as muck, no wonder the others kept away from them and were respectful to Edna

To be fair to Edna, the audience isn't giving him/her much - there's an old saying in Scotland that it's like playing the Glasgow Empire first house on the wet Monday evening

When the basis of your skit is promoting a massive scam hosted by the British Brainwashing Corporation, it’s bound to fall short of the usual level of genius Barry Humphries is capable of. Adding discordant, malevolent energy to comedy brilliance just doesn’t mix.

It just felt like inviting almost all of American audiences to the show. Just watch Edna's appearance on American talk shows if you find one, I'm pretty sure there's one video where the presenter cuts her off... which is just stupid.
