  • @DambeWarriors

    @DambeWarriors

    2 жыл бұрын

    Dambe originated as a form of boxing associated with the Hausa butchers of West Africa and over the years, has morphed itself into a striking art with a twist of entertainment. RULES - The goal in Dambe is to deliver a single blow that causes any part of the opponent's body to touch the ground. - The dominant hand wrapped with cloth into a balled fist is used for punching, while the weaker hand is used to ward off blows. Hence, imitating the concept of the "Spear" and "Shield" respectively. - Matches are scheduled for 3 rounds that lasts 3 minutes per round. A round ends when there is a long period of inactivity, a boxer's hand binding becomes loose, or either fighter "voluntarily breaks his fighting stance". - Fans are loyal to 3 Fight Houses. GURUMADA, JAMUS & KUDU - There are no weight classes and "bantamweights" can be pit against "heavyweights" in Dambe matches.

    @@DambeWarriors Thank you for that info. I've got a couple more questions: - Are body punches allowed? - Can they use the wrapped hand up front, or must the non-dominant hand always be in front of their bodies, like a shield?

  • @DambeWarriors

    @DambeWarriors

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@jpesmar Yes, but you'll only see body punches used for a combo effect. Each has his own unique fighting stance but the non-dominant hand serves as a shield and is usually the preferred in front. That's how Dambe is known as the "Spear" and "Shield" which served as a form of military training for young men in the past.

    Imagine the arm wrap being a cast....like on a broken arm, but then dipped in an adhesive and broken glass. When dry, it's called the 'spear.' The other arm is the 'shield.' This has been literally used as a poor man's weapons of battle for the warlords...when the warlords can't trust their 'warriors' with more sophisticated weapons.

    It's Hausa, it belongs to the afro-asiatic language family, same as Arabic. Maybe that's where the similarly is coming from? Or it could just be some of the Arabic words in the language due to Islamic influence.
