I wouldn't have backed Bobby either. I agree with JR! Sue Ellen was wrong for talking about JR the way she did in front of his parents. No matter how long you're married, you don't speak about your spouse negatively in their family (especially their parents).

So in regards to JR and family, family means absolutely nothing to him. He chose greed and power over his family. JR's determination to run Gary off of Southfork was completely excessive. Gary was closest with Ellie and never expressed any interest in the oil business. I certainly understood why JR felt threatened by Bobby, who was the apple of his father's eye, assertive and unintimidated by his older brother.

In the S9 opener, while strolling SF with Clayton, Ellie provides insight about Jr and his relationship with his brothers.....Jr was Jock's 1st born son n from the moment Jr cld walk/talk, he n Jock became inseparable, 7 years later, Gary came along, 3 yrs after, Bobby......Jr always resented sharing Jock's attention after having him all to himself for such a long time...Bobby was always Jock' fav (Bobby knew it, which is why challenged Jock more) , While, Gary was Ellie's fav, Jr became the odd child out, which made him even more resentful toward his brothers.....Jock had no tolerance for weakness in any of son's.....When Jr ran Gary to the bottle n eventually off SF, Jock viewed him as weak n wrote him off.

Ray came to Southfork as a teenager w/ a note from Margaret begging Jock to help her son out b/c she was dying. His father ran out on the family years prior.. Fast forward to 1980 (3rd season I think). Ray's broke father came to Dallas and showed Jock Margaret's diary, in which she revealed that Jock rather than her husband was Ray's real father. He accepted it and told Ray he was proud to be his Dad. Krebbs was between JR and Bobby in age.

Jock wanted to get Gary in the Oil business, but Gary refused, wanting to work at Southfork instead, but it was J.R.'s constant nagging and pushing buttons that drove him away. His drinking was because of J.R., Sue Ellen too, except Sue Ellen was stronger than Gary. Jock not knowing how and what, that led to Gary moving is also why Jock didn't like Gary doesn't help matters. Had Jock knew what J.R. was doing to both Gary and Valene, he would've let Gary and Valene to stay and throw J.R. out of Southfork and most importantly thrown him out of the state of Texas.

In reality, Miss Ellie gave it to them as a "Gift". Bobby ran a Construction firm at the time, and one of the Houses that his crew built was the one that Gary & Val would eventually live in. I don't understand why Jr had Lucy taken from Valene all those years ago. He didn't want Gary around so why have Lucy? Eventually she was gonna try to get Lucy at some point? She was a good mom that loved her. Jr made it seem like Valene and Gary didn't want Lucy and was gonna try to get some Ewing money. That wasn't the case. If Gary wanted that he would've stuck around. If anything Jr resented Gary because he had the guts to move on and live his own life than stay in the house with his parents.

J.R. did that for Jock, because Jock and Miss Ellie wanted their grandchild raised at Southfork. J.R. had no vested interest in having Lucy there, and if he really had his way about it, he would have preferred Lucy stayed with Valene, because having Lucy at Southfork, only increased the likelihood that Valene, and thereby, Gary, would come back, and that’s the last thing J.R. wanted. He would have liked it just fine if all three of them had been a family and stayed away from Southfork, but J.R. would have done anything for Jock’s approval, at every turn. So getting Lucy was a surefire way for J.R. to make his Daddy happy, and that was always J.R.’s top priority, keeping good graces with Jock at any cost, so he could be his favored son.

In The Book Dallas by Lee Raintree, Gary was always The Problem Child. Getting a 15 Year Old Girl Pregnant at 18, not doing well in School, then getting drafted and Jock & Miss Ellie bought his way out of Vietnam. Then being an Alcoholic, and running from his Wife and Daughter for the past 16 Years. Even though The Ewings had money to find Gary they didn't, he was nothing but a waste of space.

Bobby didn’t want the company to fold and the only reason JR unloaded those Asian oil wells is because he knew they were going to become worthless- and he didn’t just sell them to save Ewing Oil- he sold them to his friends! Bobby's reason for leaving Southfork was dumb. JR did the right thing shutting down that oil well. The Ewings owned Cliff nothing. Here was a man who dedicated his life to making theirs a living hell including trying to have Jock convicted of murder. Bobby was being ridiculous.

Bobby's reason for leaveing was right...... he felt Ciff had a right to share in the profits of Ewing Oil......just Like Digger originally had rights to. as for Cliff he believed what his daddy said about Jock cheating him and cutting him out of the profits from Ewing Oil... Remember Jock and Digger were partner's in the early days.... Jock and Digger both signed a deal to share the profits of Ewing 23 between themselves and their heirs in perpetuity. However, when Ewing 6 came in, Jock put the field in his name only, to prevent Digger from gambling and drinking his half away. Digger was furious and he claimed that Jock had stolen the wells for himself, ending their friendship and business relationship. the fact Jock backed JR in shutting down that Field............ was to much for Bobby who felt Cliff had a right to share in the profits like Digger had in the first well Ewing 23.

Bobby was being HONOURABLE, nothing wrong with that. But yes, what did Digger and Cliff deserve? Digger was an asset to Jock and Jamie's father who formed Ewing Oil in the beginning- he was able to quickly detect oil in any piece of land, which was why he was called 'Digger'. But Digger's drinking got in the way and he and Jamie's father sold their shares to another oil man. But Jock bought the shares back... so what crime did he commit? Digger blamed everything on Jock, including snatching Miss Ellie from him. Miss Elllie broke up with Digger because Digger's heavy drinking made him unreliable and she was all alone and on the verge of losing her dad's ranch to a public auction sale hence married Jock so he would save the ranch... but she did fall for him for real. And in Jock's defence, he gave Digger a piece of land, no charge, to start over. Digger refused and sold it back to him for a pittance. But later on, when chasing a rabbit across same land after he sold it back- he found there was a large quantity of oil there. So Jock owed him NOTHING. Digger and Cliff were their own worst enemies.
