On July 7th 2016, a tragic event unfolded in Dallas, Texas, that shook the nation. During a peaceful protest against police violence, a lone gunman carried out an ambush targeting law enforcement officers. This attack occurred in the wake of highly publicized incidents involving two controversial police shootings , which had sparked widespread outrage and calls for reform.
As protesters marched through downtown Dallas, their chants were quickly shattered by gunfire.
The gunman, positioned himself high above, and began targeting police officers, indiscriminately firing at them from a hidden vantage point. Chaos ensued as officers and civilians alike scrambled for safety.
Four hours later, a tense standoff unfolded as law enforcement worked to negotiate with the suspect. However, the suspect refused to cooperate, leading to a historic call by Dallas Police Chief Brown.
In memory of the fallen.

And I'll be honest I forgot all about it within weeks because there was basically no coverage of it and it was only until the next year when I happened to see something on KZread about it that I went and reinvestigated and researched this incident. And I'm just absolutely appalled by how little coverage and how little public or institutional knowledge there is of what happened that day. And tragically because of that I think we're doomed to have it repeated. Another incident, that involve the officers that were sitting down a lunch and were literally gunned down, does anybody remember that

I knew Sgt. Smith and OFC Krol from working downtown at the Federal Courthouse as a contract security guard. They where both pretty squared away in my interactions with them and always had a decent gallow joke to swap with us about the "interesting" people we interacted with. Going into to Dallas the morning after was an experience, no one was out an about not even the homeless were out. The company told us "to get to the building quickly" in case there was anyone else deciding to shoot at law enforcement and mistook us as police.

Sgt. Smiths funeral was held at the Catholic Parish I attended as a kid in my old neighborhood. Had no idea him and his family were regular parishioners there. Definitely hit close to home when I found that out. I was actually in the area when the funeral was being held. So many cops from all over the nation and even Canada were there showing support.

Couple interesting tidbits of information that I will share from both living and working as LE in the area when this occurred - They had so many officers attempt to check on scene and became involved in this incident that their CAD system crashed completely, and ended up being down for upwards of an hour while the shooting was still actively occurring, which essentially rendered dispatch blind and nearly useless, through no fault of their own. Further adding to the confusion and chaos. Also, to the points regarding the horrendous management by the chief. Chief David Brown (mentioned in the video) was notorious for running the agency into the ground and pandering to the city council, etc. In the history of the agency, he was the starting point of the officer shortage crisis they're still experiencing to this day, being 500+ officers short. Case in point, in 2010, his son (a convicted felon) shot and killed a police officer at a neighboring agency during a disturbance call. Chief Brown proceeded to then issue an agency memo stating that any officer who was told to work his son's funeral and refused to do so would be terminated immediately. He was well and truly despised by the rank & file officers under him.

Even for the people who hate them simply because they wear a badge. Completely disregarding the fact that they have a family and had a life beyond their sworn duty to serve and protect. There have definitely in our history been bad apples in law enforcement. In some areas worse than others. But you can not convince me that the vast majority of the men and women who dedicate their lives to serve and protect do it for the right and honorable reason. And it's extremely unfortunate that they are more often than not the one's who pay the ultimate price for the hatred that has infested our country. We need to honor the men and women who serve and protect our communities and always remember those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
