I dont think people regarded it as such. The nighttime soaps were popular but they were never held in high esteem, if i recall. Delicious is a bit different than artistic, too, dont forget. Ovbs the acting was off the charts amazing, and these scenes stand the test of time, but we sometimes looked at soaps as as competitors trying to outdo, out wow the audience. +Rosannasfriend In this scene, Sue Ellen wasn't a full fledged alcoholic...yet...Every affair J.R. had, Sue Ellen was humiliated over and she drank more and more to offset the hurt and probably the hormones from her pregnancy. What we see here is a customary toast to pregnancy rather common in the 70's and still is...However, in the story, this was just a warning shot. To be honest, the writers never were taken to task over the potential of fetal alcohol poisoning on the child which would have caused physical or mental problems that may last a lifetime.

I don't think it's any way a defense, but I think a lot of men might have lost their temper had their wife just informed them she was carrying another man's baby, especially in such a smug way. I actually think cheating and getting pregnant are worse than him losing his temper one time over the fact that she did it. However, he's a much worse cheater than she is so I didn't feel bad for him, but if you were simply comparing who was worse in this one situation it was clearly her. As much of an SOB as he was I never once saw JR hit her before this, and I never once saw him hit her after this. If this was the only example of how he treated her I actually wouldn't think little of him that being said while I don't think he is a wife beater he clearly abused her throughout their marriage.

Handle it, Sue Ellen. That's my girl. She gets right up in JR's space and don't take ISH from him.
Definitely. 80's prime-time soaps were the best. Dallas, Dynasty, Falcon Crest; they were all well-written and had great actors.
Sue Ellen's voice sounds young and fresh here guess it was all that booze that made her sound like a rusty liquor cabinet in latter seasons.
JR and Sue Ellen were my favorite characters on Dallas.
Love those 70s clothes. Look what happens later, when the 70s becomes the 80s and fashion commits suicide.Should bring back 70s style: wearable and rational and feminine all at once. No Spanx or waist trainers...not even any bras....looked great.

It's a real shame Linda Gray never earned an Emmy for her fantastic performance as Sue Ellen, particularly her downward spiral into abject drunkeness (watching her stumbling around downtown Dallas sloshed out of her mind scared me as a kid) and relentless climb out of it (I loved it when she got back at JR by using probably his second most hated nemesis Jeremy Wendell). She was a true gift to TV back then and played against Larry Hagman amazingly.

This was the 70s and the link between alcohol and birth defects hadn't fully been established yet. As for the slap, it's dramatics.
Shows how unrepentant JR is here! He's the father of John Ross, and he won't own up to it. And the fact that he won't apologize to Sue Ellen for the slap makes him a reprobate!

Back in the 70s...it was considered "ok" to have wine while preggie...even today a woman can have a glass.
This storyline inspired one of the funniest panels in the Mad Magazine Dallas parody: JD (JR): Sullen, I don't want you goin' around cast doubts about me bein' the father of our baby? Why, do you know what people are CALLIN' me...? Sullen (Sue Ellen): The same thing they're callin' the baby, I imagine!

JR forgot, a married woman do not have illegitimate kids, even if it is not the husband's. The ultimate payback for a cheating husband..have him raise some one else's kid!
Maury could settle this real quick. Paternity and lie detector. JR would fail lie detector of course.
