I have the entire "Dallas" series on DVD, and this is the best performed scene of the entire series. Larry Hagman & Victoria Principal really made this segment come to life. The look of sheer helplessness on JR's face as the monitor flatlines @ 4:19 and Pamela's trembling response @ 4:39 made this scene seem frighteningly real. Even 33 years later, it holds up very well - and it still brings tears to my eyes. Sadly, this scene was essentially declared null & void when the show's creative team wrote it - and much of the following season - off as a bad dream.

Without a doubt the climax of the 357 episodes. It is impossible to see it without crying... Bobby, on his deathbed, with in front of him, the two rivals, Pamela and Jenna, at the peak of their beauties and placed (ironically?) side by side, like two sisters, J.R., the only one who manages to say something to Bobby ... and throws a shattering "Don´t do this to me, Bobby!", Miss Ellie, with Clayton in the background, Ray Krebbs the half-brother destroyed by grief, as well as his wife Donna. They had to have an idea there would’ve been tremendous pressure to bring Patrick Duffy back. If they wanted to kill Bobby fine But do it in a way where his body was never found like on a plane crash or boat accident. I can’t believe these writers didn’t think like other soap opera writers and leave it open for characters to come back even when they die
@NorthTrainmeister
9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, it wasn't up to the writers. In 1984, Patrick Duffy had made it quite clear he wanted to leave the show - and never return. He requested that Bobby's character be dispensed with in an unambiguous manner. This was done, and done very well, as the clip above demonstrates. And, almost as soon as it aired, the pressure was on to get him BACK on the show... When Duffy agreed to return to the series in 1986, the writers had painfully few options when it came to "resurrecting" Bobby Ewing. Fans of the show were also quite adamant they wanted Patrick Duffy back as Bobby Ewing - not as some imposter or poser. And that was how the idea of the 'dream' season came about.
@jerseyman653 жыл бұрын
Yes it was a sad moment in television when this episode aired. Too bad it got erased a year later. Though it was good to see Bobby again, I was not at all happy with the dream explanation. Considering they could of came up with better scenarios, they chose that one. I would made this Bobby revealed to be an imposter and the real Bobby kidnapped after that evening. The whole kidnapping would be about Wendell getting Ewing Oil from JR and Bobby, and using the imposter to sell Bobby's shares to support the early Season 9 storyline. Then the death would still be thinking that Katherine did it in rage while Wendell had not even figured her to be there to run him over thwarting his plans. So therefore Bobby was kept hidden until he escaped to hit his head and get amnesia to end up in a sanitarium someplace midway through the 10th season. While part one of Season 10 would be Pam hallucinating Bobby constantly as even the shower end on her honeymoon with Mark Graison would of been revealed that as Season 10 would of revealed that. Anyway still watched, but the show was never the same. However, good writing and actors in this one as it made me cry to see Bobby go like this.

As far as DALLAS cliffangers goes this one is up there. In my opinion those tears from the cast were real. "Don't leave me body" and "No Bobby!" A real tear jerker. Then again in 12 months time the shower scene: "Good morning!" DALLAS is DALLAS.

In many ways, this was the end of "Dallas". The series just didn't work without Bobby as a counter-weight to JR, and the cheesy way they brought back his character ("it was all just a terrible dream") was a complete insult to the viewers.

Incredible scene, more emotional than anything I have ever seen on the screen.

Agreed folks
They had to have an idea there would’ve been tremendous pressure to bring Patrick Duffy back. If they wanted to kill Bobby fine But do it in a way where his body was never found like on a plane crash or boat accident. I can’t believe these writers didn’t think like other soap opera writers and leave it open for characters to come back even when they die
@NorthTrainmeister
No doubt, Dallas is and always will be the best series ever. Steve Kanaly (Ray) is amazing!!!
In that moment we saw that despite everything that happened between JR and Bobby, JR truly loved his baby brother.
In many ways, this was the end of "Dallas". The series just didn't work without Bobby as a counter-weight to JR, and the cheesy way they brought back his character ("it was all just a terrible dream") was a complete insult to the viewers. This scene itself, however, was very powerful and even had me sniffling away on the couch as I watched it. Kind of embarrassing for a young man sitting next to his new wife lol
This scene gets me every time… Pam Ray and Donna & even JR 😢
Still a tearjerker. Totally agree with NorthTrainmeister comments abou Larry Hagman and Victoria Principal. The show was special

Patrick Duffy chose to leave Dallas because his parents were murdered in real life.
The slow-motion shot gives it such a surreal quality...almost like the whole thing is a dream. 🤔
Second saddest cliffhanger besides the Mickey trotter storyline in 1983. I would have liked to have seen the Mickey trotter character stick around until closer to his actual death which I think was 1988.
All a dream. This is where bob newhart got his inspiration for the newhart ending.
It would have been better if the real Ms Ellie was in the episode
This was a big mistake killing off Bobby. The show lost forward momentum. The other HUGE blunder was the divorce between Pam and Bobby. Whomever thought of these plot twists needed to be fired.
Still brought a tear to my eyes all these decades later.
Dream season....new actors...I do not understand how I could watch Dallas throughout my entire teenage years the mid 1980s and the late 1980s. The series turned to shit way early. It was the best only the first few seasons.
