Whipped coffee gained popularity as "Dalgona coffee" during the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic when many governments began campaigns to promote isolation and social distancing. Dalgona coffee gets its name from the fluffy, toffee-like texture of the coffee when whipped into foam. The spike in interest during the quarantine period has been attributed to the calming, ASMR-like effects of watching online DIY videos. In India, it has been widely available for many years and is originally known as “Phenti Hui coffee” or beaten coffee. The difference is that with Phenti Hui, milk is poured on top of the whipped mix rather than being spooned on top of the milk.
While most dalgona coffee doesn't actually contain dalgona, the South Korean version of honeycomb toffee candy, one South Korean cafe does actually combine dalgona with milk tea or coffee.
