Love hearing stories regarding "creative rule bending". EVERY team that wins at any level, does it. The creativity of guys like Chad Knaus, Gary Balough, Mark Martin, Jr Hanley, Smokey Yunick, Jeff Hammond, Jr Johnson, Maurice Petty, Jake Elder, Harry Hyde and many many more, need to be celebrated. In my opinion, if there's no rule against it, it's not illegal, and open to exploitation. Racing needs this spirit of creativity. 👏👏👏 🇨🇦

Agreed! So many fans are quick to say "oh! They cheated! Boo!" Thats racing. You are trying to achieve that competitive edge on the competition. It was like 50 years ago and It'll be that way going into to the next gen too. I'm sure the big dogs and creative minds will find a way with this next gen car. 😄

Alvars Dzenis, Smokey Yunick was the NASCAR cheating king. He cheated constantly and NASCAR forced him out in 1970. He's not in the NASCAR HOF nor will he ever be.

@@SlimShadeTree28 Ray Evernham was with Gordon since he joined NASCAR. In fact, no team was interested in Gordon unless Ray Evernham was part of the package. Without Evernham, Gordon would've been a nobody.

"Creativity" is why a lot of people follow the sport. My dad read "Best Damn Garage In Town" to me when I was 5, and I begged to watch a NASCAR race. This is in Australia, by the way. We turned on the 1993 Daytona 500 and my dad and I mused about why the front guys might be fast, and why the fast guys might not be at the front. Then we wildly speculated as to how Gibbs was anywhere near winning when it ended. Please encourage your guests that having the rulebook written around you is the shiniest badge of honor that there is in your sport. Junior Johnson and Smokey Yunick will always be household names because of their innovation. I've given up everything I owned to study engineering because I want to have the big ideas that stock car chiefs have been having for decades. It is what a large portion of us love.

silkysixx, Smokey Yunick was the king of cheating in NASCAR. So much so that NASCAR forced him out in 1970. He's not in the NASCAR HOF nor will he ever be. Dale Earnhardt Sr once stated that any win obtained by cheating is NOT a victory. Dale Sr disliked anybody that cheated. I worked at DIS 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. I remember one Saturday that Dale Sr discovered a set of illegal cylinder heads on the #3 race car. He demanded that they be changed, or he'd not drive it. Dale Sr was very picky, and he always deeply inspected every race car that he ever drove before every race. Anything not right got corrected/fixed, or he'd refused to get into the car. Like his dad, Dale Jr, has a high integrity level. IMHO, Dale Sr had the most integrity of any NASCAR race car driver that I ever met. I've met a lot of them because I raced in the NASCAR North series for many years and worked at DIS for ten years. I totally agree with the NASCAR executives. Dale Earnhardt Sr was the greatest race car driver in NASCAR's history. He could do things with a race car that other race car drivers thought were impossible to do. Whenever he'd say something wouldn't work, he was 99% right.

That book is probably the best about motorsport I've ever read. Smokey was never a cheater. He took the view that if the rule book didn't say you couldn't do something, then it would be ok to do it. As soon as something was banned he dropped it.

Damn skippy, lol. I was just watching an interview with Dave Marcis. Dave is 80 now, and he got to know Smokey really well, back in the day. ( Dave was/is younger than Smokey ) He said that Smokey taught him a lot, and helped him a lot. He also said Smokey was way ahead of the competition in so many ways. I watched Bud Moore say that it wasn't uncommon for Smokey's engines to have a 30 hp advantage over the rest of the field.

The 1997 All-Star car Ray Evernham built was legal, but it really stretched the limits and really experimented with concepts used now. I think front and rear geometry were utilized to death, they had bump stops, and probably used a very flexible track bar.

Having the tire carrier cave in the quarter panel in every final pit stop for a few years definitely rates up there for interpretation of the rules

I remember the early years of Chad & Borland. Those guys were insanely creative. Watching Newman & Johnson just immediately go to the top of Nascar was amazing.

That's what I was thinking too. Cheating would be, The Fuel tank must be 10 gallons and you put a 13 gallon fuel tank in the car. Innovating/creativity is put a 10 gallon fuel tank in the car but the rule book says nothing about putting a second 1 gallon fuel tank in the car. I think Smokey Yunick did that or something similar. I can't remember who it was.

@@stonewall01 Smokey didn’t put a second fuel up tank in, what he did was the rules said the fuel tank must be a certain size, but there was no rule about the size and length of the fuel line, it was same thing that people in F1 were doing.

I think that’s the biggest thing that gets overlooked. People will discredit Jimmie and say he just had cheated up cars. I would imagine faster cars didn’t always mean easier to drive. It takes a wheelman to handle that creativity.

And Chad learned from the best on how to bend the rule book working for ray everham on the 24. Also that is why the 48 24 shop was ran the way it was

Anyone remember those shocks Jimmie had at Watkins Glen? Another one of those "don't bring these back to the track" Chad will go down as one of the best for sure.

Chad joined HMS in 1993-1997 to crew member with Jeff Gordon, as Evernham was the crew chief, and left to join DEI in 1998. 1999 he joined Melling racing team. 2002 he returned to HMS as crew chief for Jimmie Johnson. Evernham left HMS to form his own team in 1999. 2007, Gillette bought a majority portion of that team and pushed Evernham out. Evernham sued and lost. That team was later sold to Petty Enterprises. After dabbling around NASCAR for a few years, Evernham returned to HMS in 2014.

You don’t remember the yawed out time? Cars on the straight away were completely crooked going in a straight line. If they slammed on the brakes there would be 4 tire marks not 2. NASCAR had to take this away.

Well said JR, I want my crew chief pushing the limits, finding loop holes! As a long time HMS fan all my buddies who are NOT HMS fans used the Chester word all the time when Jimmie won and still use it (currently 2023) when anything happens with HMS.

Man I wish there were more Chad K. in the sport!I'm sure there testing and trying things,but he was the 👑 king of cutting the rule book and it shows what kinda dedication you need at your job!People call it cheating and that's not cheating!Cheating requires no dedication to anything!I appreciate ya Chad and appreciate your hard work!

Which was deemed illegal because you were not supposed to mess with how those parts mounted. On the old car, just maybe a fine. Anything Gen 5 and later, that is a big fine and suspension and points deduction.

You guys remind me of my old army buddies talking about old times. I guess it is the same though, tight knit teams always miss old times after they split up.

I went to nascar UTI in mooresville NC and heard quite a few stories of the DEI "advantages" they had run in races.A few of my instructors were ex-DEI shop/pit crew employees....

ROB HOLMES, Dale Earnhardt Sr had a very high integrity level and he greatly disliked cheaters. If he caught any DEI team member cheating, they were out the exit door soon afterwards.

This man is like no other🐐.

I saw Mr. Knaus at the Concord Mills Panera at lunch time 2 or 3 years back, give or take. I didn't say anything to him then (out of respect, who wants to be bothered during lunch), but come to think of it, I think he got a little extra mustard on his turkey sandwich, and had NASCAR known, it probably would have been a significant fine. Not saying anything, I'm sure the statute of limitations has long expired. But the mustard was a little heavy, that's all I'm saying. He knows it, and Jimmie Johnson knows it.

This is the BEST SHOW out there if you really want to know about "What's Really Up" in Nascar...

FYI - The "Shredded Beef Jerky" (where its in a snoose can) is the best! Great lil trail snack.

The NBCSN TV version has captions of some of the different aspects Chad's life.

One advantage that Chad had was he had an incredible driver to work with. Jimmy was clean and all business.

John Hammond, the T-Rex car had so many controversial aspects, in it, that NASCAR banned it and it never turned a tire on any NASCAR track again. Ray Evernham also used chemicals on the #24 car's tires so that once they heated up, they became far stickier than all the other NASCAR race car's tires.

@@djmohab2 That's why Goodyear now mounts/balance all the tires for the teams ahead of time for the races. No tire sets are pre-assigned for any teams anymore.

When I used to hear " if ya ain't cheat n you aren't trying hard enough " I just didn't agree. I have however changed my prospective because I was niave and didn't realize how prevalent it was. Teams that were racing by the rules didn't have a chance to finish in the money sometimes barely making the field are forced to imitate or vacate.

The rule book is just source material for crew chiefs to get creative. If they’re not creative, they’re not in nascar long.

@@sirdaddylops5398 Of course it is, but its not to the level that Ray and Jeff were together 3 championships and 47 races in 7 years. After the split, Jeff only had 1 championship in 15 years and had 46 wins. It took him twice as long to get similar amount of wins and 1/3 the Championships.

The only “cheating” one he got caught was the spoiler that was rigged with a lever Jimmie had to pull or push while driving. Other than that,everything else was grey area.

This is the “ factory “ that brought us the TRex car. Jeff should have down played it more.
