Thanks for the information, I was considering this rod and I'm fairly new to fishing. I generally fish smaller waters for carp that max out at about 12lb so I'll look at the 3 rather than 3.5 as you advise.

You need a bigger lead to compress the road

I decided to order a Nash Scope 10 ft 3.5 test curve carp rod. Will it still be ok to cast with a 3oz weight or do I need to use a 4oz-6oz? Would a 3.5 cast further then a 10ft 3.0 test curve? My setup is 30lb power pro braid and 3oz weight with a shimano ultegra 5500.

From what I've been shown, try to go no more than a 1/2 oz, over the test curve. With that said, a 3.5 on a 10 ft rod should be sufficient to reach 100yds fine. I can hit 100 with a 2.5 oz on my 9 ft. If you want to push further, technique (posture) and rod length would be the more deciding factors over lead size. I have seen and tried adjusting posture and added 20yds without changing leads over 3 oz. hope this helps.

Theres one problem with your measurements... you didn't tighten down to the lead before putting the clip on, so there would have been bow in the line...so really your just measuring how much line has come off the spool, not how far you cast the lead, it only takes a small breeze to bow you line quite a fair bit, so in basic terms the wind will be pulling the line off your spool faster than the lead is travelling. To measure properly, you cast, the lead hits the water, wait for it to sink, reel in the excess line untill you feel the resistance of the lead, then put the clip on. Not hating, as you said you're still learning, but your form was stiff and not great, with hardly any rod compression.. I doubt you were hitting 120 yards with the casts I saw. Just a friendly FYI :)

Sir What is the Gross weight of 12ft rod? and 3.5 test curve means how many oz?

  • @TheAnglerFiles

The weight of the rod should be available by the manufacturer. Test curve refers to the amount of weight it takes to put the tip of the rod 90 degrees to the rest of the blank. There are many vids on yourube describing test curve if you need more detail

What's the difference from 3.5 and 4.5? Is it stiffer? Not familiar with the actions on these rods.

3.5 is stiff with a soft tip. Made for some distance casting and playing bigger fish. 4.5 is very stiff as it is for heavy casting like spodding.

You will find it much easier to fully compress the rod with a heavier lead, I would be using a 3.5oz at least and even then you still need to blast it to properly load those 3.5lb rods

Great review. Incredible distance! How much casting distance over the 3.0? Thinking the 3.0 would be a better fit for me overall but I am going to try the big Lake Ontario this year. Any input is greatly appreciated! I’m currently using trout/salmon rods which are a little weak for casting carp rigs.

Hi , i have the same setup as you , for longer casts use rod s length an half in braid , 0.20-0.28 mono , keep u r arms straight when casting , only by that u won 10-15 yds /cast

Is this the black widow telescopic rod by Daiwa? I want a 12 ft carp rod but does it cast further then a surf rod? Im going to use 20lb braid and 2 or 3 oz weight.

This rod is not telescopic. Not sure how it compares to a surf rod but it does cast very well.

I can outreach it with my 12ft surf rod and 3-4oz, but the weight and feeling/sensitivity of the BW is much better and 100y with 1oz is no problem and at 2oz I can easily and consistently hit 110.
