DAIWA BG 5000 and SHIMANO TERAMAR in a Epic!! Battle with a BIG TARPON at New Smyrna Beach

Фильм және анимация

Daiwa BG 5000 and Shimano Teramar in a Epic! 45 minute Battle with a Big Tarpon at New Smyrna Beach. We have been using our Daiwa BG 5000 and our 8' Shimano Teramar XXH Tarpon rod to try and catch a Big Blacktip for my wife. But we hooked another Big Tarpon which was around 6ft and maybe 80-100lbs. I fought the Big Tarpon for exactly 45 minutes and the hook popped out when I went to pull it up by the leader. The Daiwa BG 5000 is not made to catch fish like a Big Tarpon, So I will try the Daiwa BG 8000 or our Quantum Cabo 80 with the Shimano Teramar rod. We have already caught a Big Tarpon at New Smyrna Beach earlier this year, But we don't really count this Tarpon even though I got close enough to touch the leader. The Big Tarpon have definitely Been up and down New Smyrna Beach all summer! Thanks for Watching!!
REEL - Daiwa BG 5000
ROD - 8' Shimano Teramar XXH action 20-40lb 2-5oz
LINE - 50lb Sufix 832 Braid
LEADER - 7'10" 80lb mono (single strand) with FG knot + 32 inches of 480lb cable
HOOK - 8/0 Gamakatsu 4x strong (double hook rig)
BAIT - Cut Whiting

Even though we had the Tarpon on for 45 minutes and got close enough to touch the leader, It does not count. Thanks for Watching!!

It counts, at least in tournament fishing. If you get the leader past the first eye, it counts as a catch. I would assume that, fishing from shore, touching the leader by hand is as good as getting the it into the guides. At the end of the day, you went fishing, you hooked up, got some good jumps, had a good fight, and he swam away. Sounds like a success to me! Congrats

We did catch a monster tarpon at the beach 2 months before this one and did get it all the way in! That fight was 29 minutes so during the 45 minute fight with this one all I kept thinking was we aren't going to catch 2 Trophy beach tarpon in a row. So when he got off at the end I was mentally prepared for it. The first tarpon was about 5'6" and is also on our channel, I think this one might have been a little bigger maybe 6' Thanks for Watching!!

The beach is a 1 hour drive for us, So we try to pick our days to go very carefully! We have been doing this more than 13 years and have close to 500 trips together. Having said that we have made the drive to the beach only to have conditions that were so bad we didn’t even unpack the car and just went back home! Surf fishing the east coast of Florida especially this time of year with the seaweed, Current and rough surf is a big challenge! Thanks again for Watching!!

That was a hell of a fight ! Thinking of getting either that 7” Heavy or 8” XX Heavy! Which one will you recommend? I have PENN Slammer III 6500 Spinning Fishing Reel that I got for Christmas! Thanks for an awesome video of an epic battle !

The Slammer 3 6500 weighs around 24 oz so would be be a good match for the 8’XXH which is a much stiffer and heavier rod than the 8’XH. We have the 7’ Heavy Teramar and we have the 14oz BG 4000 on it and is a very good match for the rod. The Slammer 3 6500 would be way to big for that rod and would be on the heavy side for use on the 8’ XH Teramar. We have the 25oz Quantum Cabo 80 on our 8’ XXH Teramar and plan to use it this summer so my wife can get a Big Blacktip with it! Thanks for Watching!!

  • @koreanfishingwife8766

I would just get the BG 8000 because it is only 1/2 ounce heavier than the BG 6500 but has the larger spool. They are the exact same reels so getting the larger spool on the BG 8000 for only 1/2 ounce is the way to go. We have a video on our channel where we actually got a big beach tarpon on our 2nd BG 8000. I used the reel to wear that fish down and it easily handled the big Tarpon!

If you will be throwing lures the 8’XH would be good,it is not as stiff as the 8’XXH in this video. I needed a stiff and powerful rod to cast 5oz sinkers and small to medium shark baits. You might be able to use the 8’ heavy action but the BG 5000 might feel a little heavy on that rod? Thanks for Watching!!

We have the BG 4000 at 14.3 oz on our 7' heavy Teramar and it is a good match. The Spheros 6000 is only slightly heavier which shouldn't make a difference and would also be a good match for the rod

  • @koreanfishingwife8766

    @koreanfishingwife8766

    2 жыл бұрын

30lb-40lb braid would cast much better than the 50lb braid which is a little heavy for the Spheros 6000. The rod is rated 1/2oz - 2oz and that is accurate, you would be able to cast 2oz bucktails a long way

  • @koreanfishingwife8766

IMO The 40lb braid would be the heaviest I would put on that reel. The difference between 30lb and 40lb braid is not much as far as casting and line capacity. The difference between 30lb and 50lb braid on a small reel like the Spheros 6000 as far as casting and line capacity would be very noticeable.
