Daily sketch gear! What's in my bag?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hi friends! I've been sketching a lot! I have started a sketching habit in the morning on the couch with my coffee before anyone (even the dog!) is up and this kit has been perfect. It's a no-nonsense (ok, maybe a little nonsense) kit of easy-to-grab supplies I keep tucked away in the corner of the living room that I can grab and be sketching in seconds!
What's in my sketching bag (affiliate links used)
The bag (I got mine at Marshals in the luggage section but this is close) amzn.to/3xJSYZP
Handmade sketchbook and sketchbook easel
A small panoramic watercolor sketchbook by Hand-book: amzn.to/3W5Y1Oo
Derwent water brushes: amzn.to/3QdJSuM
*a clean drink flavor bottle filled with water for refilling
A mechanical pencil and eraser
Preppy refillable fountain pens: amzn.to/3JvbIil (comes with extra ink)
*I also like the disposable set because it has more ink in each pen: amzn.to/4d8kRLc and is cheaper
Viviva color sheets: amzn.to/3w3b4p8
A palette filled with my own watercolors: amzn.to/3JvhuAE *I bought these after the small one I showed in the video, these are less expensive and much better made.
White gel pen: amzn.to/49NeRVs
Black tombow Fude pen: amzn.to/4b6KeLH
Jane Davenport fountain pen: amzn.to/3W84rfS
Filled with Dr Ph Martin Radience watercolor in Sepia: amzn.to/3Qb0Gm4
Paper towel or a few compressed towels: amzn.to/4b6HRbH
I also showed these Qor Mini tins: amzn.to/3w3gxfE
And this is my favorite empty palette for travel (you put your own paint in it, it's more than I need for my morning sketch sessions tho) amzn.to/3Uv0ksU

Awesome! Thank you!
You may be a sketchbook floozy, but, you're also an inspiration as to how much you actually paint!
Remove the friction needs to become my mantra. Thanks for sharing this. It would be so nice to just pick up and go with everything together. Happy Mother's Day, too.

Hullo Lindsay, I do enjoy seeing what people take with them when they are not working in their studio! Plein-Air set ups are so Artist specific and you certainly use the most of what you got! I love the wide range of paints and products you use to get yourself out there and PAINTING! I loved it when I saw Alice Cole use her Inktense pencils and scribble them down on the tape holding her paper down to get a "pool" of ink to put down on her picture! She made use of her water brushes as well! I know your trip is coming up! I wish you many happy memories!

Thanks! I am so excited!
You can turn the preppy’s into eye dropper pens with silicone grease and o-rings, and that would make them hold a ton of ink! Wonderful travel bag and set up Lindsay!

Good to know!
Another great dyi idea to help us on our journey! Thanks Lindsay! And happy Mother’s Day!
Like the smaller bag for your setup. To make any palette magnetic I use the adhesive backed metal plates for phones ( very inexpensive packs available on Amazon if a spare one isn’t laying around from a phone mount setup) and adhere one to the bottom of the pallet. Magnets really grab these plates. 🙂

I've been meaning to make one of these things for awhile now and thanks to you I finally made a couple. I did one with magnets and one with the magnetic clips and I like them both. Now to get better at painting with watercolor lol. I find painting from a photo reference is so much easier than painting from outside. I seem to forget everything I've learned until after I'm done and then I'm like "I forgot to make the background a more muted color than the foreground" or "Why did I draw out those distant trees when I just needed shapes?" Hopefully my memory will start to kick in before I make mistakes one day lol.

I think it might be due to the changing light. It is something you will get used to. Don't give up!
I enjoyed seeing all of your paintings! Have a wonderful trip, and Happy Mother’s Day! You are in my prayers!

Thanks, Lindsay! I love to see your ideas. My goal is to get out more and do some small things. I like that panorama book and can still use my Sketchbook Floosy stencils.

I have Grandkids. One? Is fairly sensible at 14. The other 2 are over enthusiastic artists (ages 6 and 2) This would be a fantastic holiday bag idea , for when kids are " BOREDD , iVE NOTHING TO DOOOOOOOO" or if we visit the lakes for the day ( Derwentwater isnt very far) My oldest Granddaughter will paint, and the two younger ones will do their own thing. This way I can tailor supplies to the respective ages and the kids have fun. Im a great believer in letting children use better supplies than those that are deemed "kid friendly" that way they get good results and dont learn to dislike art (I hope that all makes sense)

When I was young I wanted grownup stuff, not kid stuff. My folks didn't even dare put training wheels on my bike. So it makes sense giving them good quality tools to explore with, they get a sense of mastery early, and strongly.
Yes, Happy Happy Mother's Day to you 🌹. Becky B

You can wrap the bottle of sepia ink in a paper towel and put in ziplock bag so if it broke the mess would be contained. If you really wanted that ink.

Love the "sketchboard"! Do you think corrugated plastic, like recycled yard signs, would be rigid enough? That would make it super lightweight to hold.

I like your small bag you got from Marshalls. I'd love to know what size it is. I may or may not already have something this size, but it's hard to tell size in videos. These videos are fun, but then again, all of your videos are fun 😊. God bless you and yours. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas

It's about 6"×9"×5" I think. The grid on my table is inches if you want to pause and count:)
The tines are probably messed up on pens. They have small tubes to carry ink on your travels.
@thefrugalcrafter
Ай бұрын
I'd there a way to fix them. The pen is new and the ink never flowed well.
@donnakelly8911

@@thefrugalcrafter yes, look at the tines threw a magnifying glass . You can usually tell if they are misaligned. If not it could be the are two close together. They have thin brass sheets you can put between the tines to clean or spread slightly.

I really like my Sailor fude fountain pen. I wonder if cleaning the Preppies with a bulb syringe would improve ink flow. Super fun video and some really nice paintings (of course) in your sketch book. Thanks for sharing!
@melodiemclellan5245

Yes, clean your Preppies. Keep in mind that the feed has a wick in it, so if a section of that had dried completely, you'll have to use a loooooong soak with dish detergent, snd then a looooong clear rinse.
@thefrugalcrafter

Good to know, they are fairly new so I didn't think they would be dirty.

Since fountain pens seem sensitive to flow issues, it seems like the cleaning helps with any dust or bits left over from the manufacturing process. Brian Goulet of Goulet Pens sells bulb syringes just for cleaning fountain pens. Love your videos. Just signed up for the colored pencil class, which I hope makes them a bit more fun. Maybe markers plus pencils and your mixed media section will help. Thanks!
That bag holds a lot for being fairly small.🎉

Free and reusing something that would end up in trash.
If the ink in an inexpensive fountain pen doesn't want to flow is almost always because the nib is too tight against the feed. I have the exact same fountain pens you have, the ones that came in the array of 8 colors. The nibs are tight on the feed. This can be fixed easily by lifting the nib for about 5 seconds. Then let go. If this doesn't allow for more room for ink to flow, do it again. You don't need a large space. Maybe a quarter of a millimeter, but slave is required. If i did not explain adequately let me know and i can upload a video showing this. I bet there is already some on KZread. I just wouldn't know how to look for it. I'm sure you would though, but again, if needs must I'd be glad to upload a video showing you how.
