Daily Defense Season 3: Shooting With Weapon Mounted Lights

Спорт

"Self-defense emergencies often happen at dusk or at night, when you can't see a threat clearly. The solution is to have a light mounted on your gun. Often called a ""weapon light"" - a term borrowed from military - a gun light must be used cautiously. Wherever you shine the light, your gun's muzzle is also pointing there. So it's important to carry a hand-held flashlight for initial search and identification of a threat. The flashlight lets you illuminate an area indirectly by bouncing light off a wall or ceiling.
The gun light only comes into play when you've moved from search / identification mode to ""shoot"" mode against an attacker. If you do use the gun light when you're in ""search"" mode, hold the pistol in a READY position. This enables you to use a two-handed grip on the gun if you need to shoot. But most self-defense shootings happen at such a close range that the single-hand (strong hand) hold is more than adequate.
Gun lights come in various sizes. The classic SureFire X300 Ultra is pretty large and bulky, but it pumps out a lot of light. SureFire offers the smaller XC1 for subcompact pistols and the SureFire XSc is for micro-compact concealed-carry pistols. Gun lights come with several types of switches: (1) a simple up/down toggle switch, (2) a paddle switch, or (3) a pushbutton switch. Most lights have both MOMENTARY-ON and CONSTANT-ON modes. Momentary-on should be your ""go-to"" mode. Rarely do you need to keep the light on for a long time. When it is on, an attacker can follow the light beam back to you! "

My only trick from my 15 years experience, use toothpaste to clean your weaponlinght lens after every range trip, carbon residue reduces lumen output very quickly otherwise.

Sound advice Recommend to have a hand held as a backup If you flag someone who's not a threat, with a gun, that too could have you on a charge.

Man, the indirect lighting technique is so overlooked, great callout. Ppl fail to realize how well an entire forward space can be illuminated in residential situations like this. Nice work sir!

If they can accept one . We don't need people duck taping lights to their firearms and I have actually seen that done . So how would you mount a light on a 5 or 6 shot revolver like a S&W , Colt or Taurus ?

After taking a night pistol class I switched to having a weapon mounted light on all my carry guns. The TRL7’s are my favorite. I think it’s still important to learn to shoot with a handheld light but it’s so much easier with one attached. Jeff makes an excellent point that the weapon light shouldn’t replace your edc handheld.

Then I would scare the crap out of you. I will never have one mounted on my pistol - just as he said, whatever your light illuminates, your loaded gun is pointing at too. What if your child is up in the middle of the night and you're clearing your house? What if your wife is letting the dog out in the middle of the night just after it craps on the floor and you decide to clear the house? You really want to light up a family member with a loaded light? What if an Alzheimer patient is wandering around your house at night and you decide to clear the property with that pistol light? In some states, if you point your lighted pistol at someone who isn't supposed to be on your property but is no threat, you might be going to jail. That sir, it what scares the crap out of me - Joe Tactical who just got a weapon light after watching a KZread video. That's why I choose to have my Surefire right next to my firearms.

Based on doing some low light training and seeing the breadth of low-light defensive encounters of LEOs and private citizens, I have changed my mind from my previously held ideas about WMLs. 1) Every handgun needs a WML - No. For private citizens in a concealed carry role, a WML is not mandatory, especially when the size profile of the gun does not a support a blindingly bright full-size WML. There are much better handheld options (which should be carried and used regardless of WML status) that will actually do the things a defensive light may need to do, without the restriction of being co-axial to the barrel. Overwhelmingly, concealed carrier uses of firearms do not necessitate adding any more light to the situation. Personal crimes (robbery, rape, etc.) are apparent enough that the objective use of deadly force is understood and authorized. Home defense handguns absolutely SHOULD have a WML, because of the difference in setting. Shooting at bumps in the night is not acceptable, so bringing light to PID a family member or other non-threat is essential, especially because at night inside the home, there may actually be little to no light to see with. 2) Searching with a WML - Private citizens do not (read: should not) chase or search out bad guys. You do not clear your house. Unless there is another person in danger, you stay where you are. This contrasts to a LEO's role, where they DO need to search for and chase bad guys. Different mission set, different gear to support it. 3) Constant-on vs. momentary - If the point of a WML is to enable more visual information without having to compromise a full 2-handed support grip, why would you want to begin to compromise your grip to hold down on a toggle switch at the point of firing? Momentary would be okay for LEOs/MIL doing visual clearing while searching, but for private citizens, if it's time to go to gun, remember this: light's on, fight's on. Set it on, do your thing, then turn it off when you're finished. If you can get away with a WML on a CC gun, that's great. Main point should be: practice 1 handed shooting with a handheld light, and/or practice going from handheld to WML.

For me personally, I don't believe I should run a WML on a carry gun. The way I grip the gun, my thumb extends past the switch on most lights, so I have to break my grip significantly to operate the light, making it impractical. I also believe that the gun shouldn't come out until you're ready to shoot, at which point you've already ID'ed your target. Therefore, I personally would opt for a good handheld, that I can use to search and ID, before the gun ever leaves the holster. A home defense gun or duty gun is different though, and in my opinion should have WMLs.

I own 2 O light models, 1 standard & 1 with less brightness but a green laser dot. Both can be quickly fit to Glocks or guns with 1913 rails: Picatinny. Both O lights have strobe features. ✔️ Weapon lights are NOT easy to tote or ccw. They are best, in my view for vehicles or home 🏡 security. I'd add that I own a level lll Safariland holster with light. Glock 17/22 gen 4 version. I have a Rapid Force 👽 Gear light holster(M&P .40). It's bulky & not great for uniform carry.

Your "caution" although possible is NOT always correct...at all. "Whatever your light is pointed at, so is your barrel." WRONG! That's why 'flood' on even the most respected and best weapon lights have some flood of light. So you don't need to aim at the same spot as the light source. Your caution should be recognized but it's not at all accurate. Furthermore, there is a huge negative to too much flood light. Your main statement though is not absolute!
