Hi Everyone,
In todays video we are going to be talking about Dahlia care and maintenance. I will teach you how to fertilize, pinch, and staking your Dahlias. I planted just a little over 100 tubers and was able to give some to family and friends. 🥰 I've left 30 in our Dahlia plot and the remaining ones in containers will be planted into the landscape. If you missed our first video on planting tubers, I will link that video down below. I've also linked the products used in todays video, including what I use for pest control. If you have any questions please let me know. Thank you so much for watching todays video. 💚

I use tomato cages for my dahlias. Easy way to contain them as they get bushy after pinching. A little more expensive, but reusable every year and little maintenance. Probably too expensive if you plant 100, but for the ‘usual’ gardener, doable.

You inspired me to actually plant dailies in my garden vs potting. I pot them bc I'm zone 6 ,so winters are way to harsh here to leave in ground. So Im able to just bring them in bc of pots. My biggest issue is those nasty brown spots, that appear on my leaves. I literally do not over head water ever. I heard to put them on drip bc they respond better. So I have ideas on running it through a rain water catch basin I want to design. Could u lmk what your experience has been with any spots on the leaves? I use organic anti fungal methods and my theory is plants survived without us so do they really need us to fertilize often? I prefer not too. I've purchased a couple dailies with brown spots btw it was intentional, and I fixed the plants with care. Not sure what worked bc I did various things. I've had 1 semi cactus dahlia for 3 years this may. it's a beautiful purple she's survived plenty and she's already shooting stems (it's feb)and leaves due to my grow light n dehumidifier. Anyway any help or knowledge would be super. Thanks so much.

I planted dahlias for the first time this year directly from the bulbs. It seemed to take forever for the plant to produce buds. I did not trim but did stake them . when they finally did bloom, I was blown away at the size of the flowers. Unfortunately, a gusty rain storm came through and snapped the plants in half. I was devastated . Be sure to stake these plants well as they cannot withstand any type of wind. I will try again next year and will probably trim them as described in this video.

Thanks for the info! Got a question, I’ve seen tips on how to get the most blooms, but is there a way to get the biggest blooms??!! Also, what do you recommend for getting rid of the root grubbers without damaging your plants in the process? Snails/slugs & millipedes are my biggest offenders.

  • @InTheGardenWithClaudia

    @InTheGardenWithClaudia

    4 жыл бұрын

Hi Jeannie, I am happy this video was helpful. 🤗 So yes and no because it can depend on the variety of Dahlia you have. In general, make sure they are planted in a space large enough for them to be able to grow to their full size. For example, you wouldn't plant a dinner plate variety in a container, because it wouldn't have enough space to grow to its full potential. BUT in the past when I have left my dahlias alone and not pinched them off, they did produce bigger blooms, but fewer of them. So you could potentially have bigger blooms when you don't pinch them off. This best thing to do, is buy the dinner plate varieties, because those are huge. 😍 I would recommend Sluggo. I have a link to it in the description box. I swear by that stuff. In general millipedes feed on decaying organic matter, so don't leave any leaves or stems laying around. Bonide also has a product called Insect and Grub Control you could try in your garden. Let me know if you have more questions. 💕

Some I’ve already pinched back this season and did the others today!! It was supposed to be a dry day but wouldn’t you know it, we had a down pour!!! I was running around trying to find buckets to put over all my freshly pinched dahlias!!! All were saved! My question is, how long should they stay dry, after pinching?

You must have a really good size yard! Didn't realize that you had over 100, plus all the other things you grow - wow! When we were raising Dahlias we had over 1,000 diff varieties planted on over 300 hills. We would take 6ft length of 2" PVC pipe & w/ a post hole driver pound them into the ground about 1ft. We would then plant at least 2 Dahlias per stake (smaller plants sometimes 3-4 plants). The reason we liked the PVC pipe is that we could drill a hole at the top end to run a wire thru each hole w/ a tag of the Dahlia name name on it. My Grandparents & Grandparents used to use wooden poles/stakes - I think the reason my Dad moved us to PVC (back in the 90's) is for the fact it didnt rot as easily (for we still have tons of them stored behind the shed 12 yrs after his passing - but hey, they came in handy when planting up the ones you sent me!😉). Btw...we always liked the green jute (twine) cause it blended into the greenery of the leaves & pretty much disappeared after you tied them up. I still use on our lilies, clematis, ect - whatever needs tying up. Guess I'm a creature of habit! But I do remember my grandparents Dahlia gardens & they always had lots of the natural jute on hand. Can't wait to see yours all bloomed out! I so miss our fields & beds of color every year (plus all the floral arrangements I could make w/ them), but I definitely don't miss all of the hard work that came w/ raising that many!!!!🤪

Are the leaves turning yellow? I would not recommend giving them nitrogen, if anything I would do iron instead. Sometimes they’ll yellow do to a lack of magnesium or iron. Try adding iron to them, and see how that does, sometimes it a process of elimination, but I strongly believe that could be the issue.

Usually once every few weeks. Sometimes if I see they are lagging, I’ll up it, but usually once every 3 weeks is good for us.

What can do Dahlia plant grafting ?

I don’t know much about grafting Dahlias. I feel like grafting would not work because they are hallow but you can cross breed/cross pollinate to breed new varieties. 😊

I pinched off and never got flowers so now I’m not sure I should Again. Do you have any idea why this happened. They were very bushy and lush but no blooms.

Possibly high nitrogen fertilizer or in soil affects growth and usually no blooms 😢

Have you planted these staked dahlias in pots and then in the ground?

I did have several in containers but the ones in the ground I started in the ground. But if you have any in pots, you can transfer them to the landscape if that’s what you’re talking about. 🥰

Are your dahlia planted in pots sunken into the ground?

No, I know they look like that, but they are just edging around the plants. 🥰 Although if you've watched recent videos, you see we've completely renovated the cut flower garden.

How do I get rid of ants on dehlias

  • @InTheGardenWithClaudia

Do your dahlias have aphids? Aphids leave a sweet dew on plants and that’s what attracts the ants. If you see aphid action, get rid of them first, and you shouldn’t have any issues with ants. I have a video on what I use to get rid of aphids. 🥰
