Dahlia Gall (Crown gall and leafy gall and the difference between them)
Dahlias can suffer from Gall
Technically there are two types
Crown gall
Caused by bacterium Rhizobium radiobacter (synonym Agrobacterium tumefaciens) which causes the plant to grow in a disorganised way, producing swollen galls.
Leafy gall
Caused by bacterium Rhodococcus fascians, which again causes the plant o grow in a disorganised way, this time producing dense clusters of distorted, leafy shoots.
The latter seems to be the most common here in the UK.
Both bacterium enter the plant through wounds in roots or stems.
In this video I explain in more detail including examples.

So, so helpful Zoe. I thought I had gall, but now I think I just have a wet tuber! Hooray!

You're so welcome!
How long (1-2 years?) must avoid planting on the same area? And how many foots are contaminated near tubers?

Honestly I have had no problems planting again in the same place. it's the damaged tuber that let the gall in, don't over water and rot the tuber, that's the quickest way to get gall. Gall is in all our garden anyway, Dahlias are just sensitive to it as they are not native.
