Big Mike being a DOOM fan is proof this is the best timeline. DOOM is so complicated and yet so simple, it's an odd pairing for some people but I love it. The idea that the death of his brother and the canceling of his record deal left him homeless and angry enough that he literally went underground and came back rapping anonymously with a nylon stocking on his head to cover his face while taking aim at both the current state of rap and also the predatory nature of record labels is just...it's the perfect hip hop villain origin story, it's so compelling. I knew Dad would get it, he's a sharp cat.

backstory on the MF DOOM lore: before he donned the metal mask Daniel went by the moniker Zev Love X. Him and his brother, DJ Subroc were a group known as KMD and were working on a album titled Black Bastards. Subroc tragically died in an accident during the recording process, leaving Daniel to work on the rest on his own. When the album was finished and ready to be published the record label decided to cancel it’s release due to its controversial album cover and title [if i remember correctly]. That day was the day Zev Love X died. Years later, in the streets of Long Beach, shielding his face from the world with a metal mask…DOOM was born

The whole “let’s combine names” for collab projects is more of a DOOM thing than a Madlib thing. I think the hip-hop community ran with the name “MadGibbs” when the singles for Piñata (formerly Cocaine Piñata) were coming out. Meanwhile, with DOOM: MF - Metal Fingaz, his own production, largely Madvillain - w/ Madlib JJ - Key to the Kuffs w/ Jneiro Janel NEHRUVIANDOOM, Danger DOOM, etc. Madlib definitely has a lot of alter egos of his own! Great reaction! Love how much Mike jams out to the best MC to pick up a mic.

Doom was old enough to have grown up in the New York Tri State area to know of the Ma Bell reference that he rapped about.

"We Got It From Here.... Thank You 4 Your Service" for me is the ultimate Tribe Called Quest album, even though it was made in 2016, so way past their prime, it is filled with gems and its so juicy to pick apart and enjoy, you guys would both love it I wish more people talked about how amazing it is.

It was as charity album even though he is supposed to be the villian all the tour gains went to feeding the poor and needy i like the fact he played it of as a villian and never went into the details at interviews but at the live shows he was proud and told the audience how much people they all (the fans that bought tickets and albums ) fed the people that needed food ! R.I.P to one of the goats of their time

Great reaction. I like to think that this album is formatted like a cooking show. With your main songs as the show. And the skits are the “commercials” like you and your father mentioned!!! Madvillany is another master piece. So is J Dilla’s Donuts👍🏽

Being an 18 year old and born a year after this album called out, I’m always resentful that the older generation that they could be in the time of DOOM. but I realise that music is actually timeless, I’m feeling the same way you felt 18/19 year ago when this came out. Been listening since about 14 and all I can say is rest in power MF.

This is a totally random thought, but reading this comment took me back to my own teenage years and discovering all of the amazing hip-hop from just before my time. As I was thinking about it I could remember so clearly that feeling of wishing I had been born a decade or so earlier so that I could have experienced it all firsthand. It’s actually kinda fun/neat to think about. I was born in ‘89 and first started to really get big into hip-hop around ’98/‘99 (although it was 2004, when I first got internet access, that I REALLY started to become a hip-hop encyclopedia), so the same way a young person today might look at DOOM, Blackalicious, Mos Def, Kweli, J-5, and/or whoever else (I honestly have no clue what late-90s/early-00s hip-hop young people listen to) is the same way I, and people my age, would look at so-called “old school” or “golden era” artists like BDP/KRS-One, Rakim, Kane, Kool G Rap, all the Native Tongues (e.g. Tribe, De La Soul, etc.), and so on. Anyway, as I said, there’s absolutely no point to this comment, but I just felt like thinking out loud (so to speak) for some reason.
