Don’t mean to sound cliche but man this is beautiful to see. You’re truly lucky you get to have this type of relationship with your father. So dope to see. Cherish it man. From the misconception your pops may have had on Kendrick to acknowledging Kendrick’s artistry and really appreciating the man as an artist. Kendrick’s music means so much to me, personally being from LA and relating to a lot of situations Kendrick speaks about. Kendrick’s growth is inspiring and I can see that in your dads reaction to him. I can’t wait to see what else Kendrick does on the new album. It’s going to be bittersweet, going to react to it with you guys. Love from Los Angeles.

The 2nd verse on "FEAR." off this album where he talks about all the fears he had at 17 in hood with all the "I'll prolly die..." lines, really the whole song, hits so close to home for me it's tough for me to listen to honestly. This album overall definitely has more commercial appeal but when it does hit it hits *hard*. At the top of the video yall mentioned how Kendrick is giving you insight on the vision/perspective of a Black man in America and IMO that has always been Hip-hop at it's best. So I couldn't really relate and enjoy a lot of hip-hop music, it felt too detached from what I could relate to. Talking about guns and drugs and gangs was just so unrelated to my life I couldn't get into a lot of hip hop and to me I felt a lot of it was just so unauthentic. I still listened to people like Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Eyedea, people whose lyrical content I could at least relate to a bit in my life. I wrote Kendrick off for a while, but when I finally sat down and listened to GKMC I was absolutely blown away. Kendrick did something a lot of hip hop artists couldn't do, he put me in his shoes and told a story so vivid I could at least start imagining what his life was like, what his neighborhood was like, and how growing up in a place like that influenced him to be who he is today. He touches on things EVERYONE can relate to, peer pressure, basic survival, loving your family and friends, fearing for your future, uncertainty, and by doing this I was able to actually empathize and understand his story better than I could any previous rapper. Kendrick is an incredible artist.

@@Joseph-R The way I've always explained the appeal of "Street rap" I'll say to be general is that it's similar to watching a Gangster/Mob movie: Yeah, I may not have life experience in exactly what it is I'm being presented with but it can be fun to live vicariously for a moment while I'm experiencing it. By doing that all the braggadocious lines & bravado go from someone saying it to you about themselves to you saying it about yourself for the time period that the song is on. It's an empowering experience for alot of people. Then you also always have to remember that Hip-Hop by nature is a competitive genre which makes it unique to pretty much every other musical genre. Almost from day 1 you had rap battles & cyphers where the whole point was to showcase your skill at rapping being better than everyone else's and that same energy will always be an underlying factor in all forms of rap music.

Pops was pretty spot on about the Prince reference. In Kendrick’s verse on New Freezer he says, “I let my hair down, Prince lives through me!” Prince was supposed to be featured on TPAB I think. They met up to record and which turned into a long conversation opposed to laying down any music. Nice catch by your dad!

ELEMENT isnt a standard brag track. He's saying all the fame isn't gonna change him. His music comes from where he's from, he writes for them, and that makes him real, unlike other rap artist. He gets to bring the street life to the general public because he "makes it look sexy" but that public acceptance isn't going to take him out of his element.

Kendrick has been referred to as a West Coast, one-man OutKast. I'd LOVE to see you and your dad explore OutKast's discography. (I'd probably PAY to see that!) The creative progression from the first album to the last is comparable to Kendrick's, and like Kendrick even in spite of that massive growth, even their first album is incredible. Plus, their crew (Dungeon Family) has been consistently relevant, from Cee-Lo/Gnarls Barkley in the previous decade all the way to Future in the present. I think you guys might also enjoy checking out Devin The Dude, who is another emcee whose influence I can detect in Kendrick's work.

It's not bad, but it definitely is not up to post with the quality of the other songs. Kendrick was interviewed by Big Boy (I think? That one might've been with someone else) shortly after the release of DAMN., and he asked Kendrick about DUCKWORTH. Kendrick said that him, his father and Top Dawg had know about that since Kendrick was signed to TDE in the mid-2000's, and he had been looking for a good excuse to turn that story into music, so Ducky and Top didn't really find out for the first time after Kendrick played DUCKWORTH. for them, but it was still a cool moment, regardless.
