HAHAHAH HE FUCKIN HATES IT
I definitely feel like he's going to enjoy All My Heroes Are Cornballs a good deal more and I'll be very excited when that comes along, since that one's more musically inclined than Veteran. That said, I'm glad you started with Veteran. It may have thrown him in the deep end almost immediately, but damn will it be helpful to appreciate more of his future stuff and his evolution instead of going backwards and potentially seeing a regression, even if I say Veteran is my personal favourite. As to why, I think it's just plain fun. It's radical, it's funny and silly at points, it's dark and murky, it feels like a scant, thrown together project made in real time, in the middle of the night, and that D.I.Y. edge and its intense creativity make it a blast to listen to everytime.

Yeah Veteran really embodies and parodies the "soundcloud" type DIY music.
Honestly it took me 5-10 listens before I truly loved Veteran, but once it clicked, the album blew me away with all of it's intricacies and references. Peggy is truly a top tier artist, and despite your dad not connecting with it, still so glad you chose to do this album. 👍🏼
33:40 that is the strangest thing I heard someone say. We call something an instrument when we can make controlled sounds off of it, if you can control sounds on a computer then the computer is an instrument. Most your favorites past the 80s went through computers no way round it, are they therefore not music? Very grumpy take. If a digital synth is used to play Mozart is it automatically not music, even though youre using keys as you would in a piano? If I then record that on my phone and sing some lyrics over it is it not music still? Even though I didnt use any "instruments"? Definitions evolve to keep with the times. This mind trap is just an easy "criticism" older folks turn to when they hear something they don't like/understand and want to dismiss it wholly without thinking too much. Other than that interesting reaction, this album really is close to the deep end of experimental hip-hop and definitely not for everyone 👍
Veteran is actually his 4th album under the Jpegmafia name, although the first couple might be mixtapes but they are sick and worth a listen, especially his collab with Freaky

Very funny reaction from your dad. The Internet references in this album is insane and the distance between your dad and the album is apparent for sure. But fun reaction nonetheless :)
Really excited for this one. Also the new Maxo x Pink Siifu x Madlib song that came out today is incredible! The video is pure art
thankyou for doing this.
His reaction on Real Nega is so funny LOL
Oh shit, I didn’t expect a Peggy solo album this soon but I’m here for it. Peggy was great on taboo but hopefully this won’t be too off putting, especially it being peggys most freaky one. Personally I woulda put LP! Offline first then work my way backwards. But listening to an artist organically from their start is always the truest form to experience something. Almost like immersing yourself as a fan in the 2018 underground rap scene, when most never heard of jpegmafia or his previous Devon Hendryx alias. I know it shocked me when I first landed on Peggy’s music, I’m excited to see how this reaction goes
I literally asked for this on the denzel reaction thank you!
Much respect to you for creating the space for this discussion/confrontation! The thing I love about this album is, that it questions what is music, what can bemusic, and even what can be a song. There are pieces of music in this song which are divided into different songs, but honestly are just one big progression.
I think what was missing for him to connect with this is the politics of the lyrics and the online culture surrounding it, he is referencing a lot of racist forums and provoking the alt-right, there are a lot of references to terms they use and so on.
cant wait to see his reaction to dd form 214

Your dad seems more like a LP! Guy
I knew you'd be a peggy fan 💀💀💀
Loving this! When I saw this pop up I couldn't predict how your dad would react at all. It's definitly an album that can be hard on the first time through even for someone that knows these experimental sounds and production. Don't blame him for being so lost and overwhelmed. Cheers to him for at least trying to understand it. Personally Cornballs is my favorite of his, probably cus its got the same level of wild production while also being vibey and fun.
He will love 100gecs
I swear he's gonna love Rebound! when you get to LP!
This is going to be interesting
I would of Def not started off with this album, but I gotta respect it haha. He'd probably like AMHACB better since I feel like that has actual 'songs' in them and the production is just phenomenal. Don't hold out on us with AMHACB and LP! review since you already committed with veteran haha

50:09, What I would like to say about this and about some of the other comments your dad has made questioning the 'appeal' of this album to young people is that JPEGMAFIA isn't trying to appeal to young people with his music. I know plenty of people my age who dislike this album apart from 1-2 tracks. This is because unlike most music which serves the purpose of entertainment, this album prioritizes getting it's message across in the rawest form possible sacrificing mass appeal but NOT the quality. There are a lot of things Peggy says on this album that I connect with relating to racism and general problems within America that I've never felt another artist articulate so clearly. And his delivery and off putting persona on the album really makes it all the more appealing due to it feeling like a reflection of some of the ugly stuff that comes straight from the underbelly of American society. Understandable that your dad didn't connect to it because this album is not meant to be understood so easily, but I'd say the reason why this album did put Peggy into the spotlight is because when people started to get it, a lot of them instantly became HUGE fans of his music and his message. Peggy doesn't have a wide appeal on this album, but people who do end up becoming fans of Peggy's music are quite committed to his art. Respect for giving this one a chance though👌🏼

Lmfaooo. The first time I heard this, it hurt my ears, I turned it off after the third song.... It is now one of my favorite albums of all time, easily his best album imo. What a grower, it's insane. Psychedelic, it's like the beats are rapping along with him. Like the Animal Collective of rap production or something.
You should react to 'LP!', that one is very comprehensive and 9-10/10, IMO.
Lol he truly didn't want to listen to this. I recommend Rich Brian's The sailor album for your dad, i think that it'll be one of his favorites.

I was pretty confused the first time I heard Veteran.
Yooo its time
as someone who loves peggy’s stuff, i’m glad ur pops gave an honest reaction
Real Nega was originally produced by CHFWRRN, i think it's the only song on the album that Peggy didn't make from scratch, he did change a bunch of stuff but he also took all the credit for it, i think that's real scummy since it's such a unique and iconic beat to come out the album, Chef is a really great and one of a kind producer/beat maker and he deserves more recognition for his work.
@r3n837
Жыл бұрын
This is a recolection of what i remember Chef saying when i was once scrollin thru the comment section on his music, Peggy asked permission to use the beat but Chf couldn't answer (for uh reasons, can't remember), he ended up using it anyways without his permission, next thing Chf knows is that an album with a song that's using one of his beats is blowing up, Veteran by Jpegmafia, Real Nega is one of the standouts and people praise Peggy for how unorthodox it is, main man of course tries reaching out to him and contacting him but gets no answers, from here on out i don't remember the finer details so you should try and look into more info on this in case i forgot about something, or got anything wrong, also i believe Chef wants to move on from all that and has started dropping new music pretty recently, a small compilation of beats with some really minimalist production, it's fun, check it out if you want on your own time.

Also an addition on My thoughts on Neogaf dying, Neogaf was swarming with alt-right users, they're an extremely hateful group of people, site became a breeding ground for racists, misoginists, homophobes, transphobes every type of hate you can think of
Literally fell in love with Peggy the first time I heard Veteran back in 2018. It’s been a pleasure seeing his growth as an artist but this album will always hold a special place in my heart. I overplayed the hell out of this album all my 2018.
I appreciate this album more than I like it, as I think he really started making his best actual "songs" on later albums. its definitely more of a holistic experience than individual tracks being bangers (tho there are highlights). its the album he made just fucking around, and with that it's a different kind of appreciation I have for Veteran than his other albums. its how he uses the sounds you would never ever think up to make genuinely interesting soundscapes and rhythms. how he finds a way to flow on these weird instrumentals is really commendable to me too, and his attitude is a fun compliment to the balls-to-the-wall nature of the songs. also what i will say, Veteran might be his best album for live shows. he goes IN with the energy

Incredibly said. Just relistened to cornballs again and the growth is astounding. So much fuller
Finally got around to finishing the video and I’ll just add my personal perspective on why I love JPEGMAFIA’s music. The obvious is it just sounds amazing to me, as a producer it’s insane how Peggy is able to flip samples. He also perfectly walks a thin line of being experimental, but also being extremely catchy and still sounding like something (at least for me) I’d bump in the car. Also, he’s one of the very few artists with his level of notoriety who is so honest in his music, he makes music that he wants to make and it shows in everything he’s put out. And lastly, he’s just a hilarious dude. He’s a weird, funny dude with a great sense of humor and growing up that’s how I always was. So I guess it’s like I see a part of him in me and it makes me appreciate how he’s never let anything stop him from being himself

HAhaha hes so exhausted but hey i can relate too, my first time listening to all my heroes are cornballs i felt like vomitting
As a fan, i can say that i like jpegmafia for how danceable his music is. Just kidding but i think i like how it expands perception of what music can be and its a really unique experience that was to me enjoyable. It feels like my brain is going through some meditation type thing even though its not a relaxing type of sound. His next album is way more fun and accessible while still just as experimental so ive played that one more than this one. I like them a similar amount but theres more times that i feel like turning that one on. But his latest album has grown to be my favorite because theres a complete mastery of sample usage, especially in Hazard Duty Pay which samples several vocal melodies from i think different songs and makes them into a really beautiful, even if wild, vocal arrangement that goes so smoothly with his rapping. He takes influences and samples from a lot of areas like even Brazilian Jazz. He has a really respectable worldview and a good thinker and i think it informs his music, to be things that maybe don’t sound accessible but feel like theyre on a subconscious level, doing something. As far as other artists doing experimental music, his sound is unique but theres other artists just as experimental. Death grips like you said but also clipping and injury reserve and Backxwash and even a couple decades ago, Dalek who sampled noise and metal instead of sampling soul, like hip hop traditionally did. Earl sweatshirt, billy woods, there’s a lot. And the Japanese artist Haru Nemuri who Jpegmafia just performed at a festival of hers

I feel like the biggest thing that has to click for this album (particularly as a first exposure to peggy) is realizing that it’s essentially designed to be off-putting to the casual listener. So in a way, once you think of it like that, it feels like a prank that you’re in on, and once it can’t scare you off anymore, you start to pick up on the enjoyability in it.
