People always say Reasonable Doubt is Jay-Z’s best album. But personally, The Blueprint is his Magnum Opus. Everything about it is HOV in his prime and top-form. Elite Production, 5 years in the game and his 6th album so better with experience, sharper pen. Takeover came out a few months before Ether. When Takeover dropped, at the time, people were saying Nas was finished because he weren’t released great music at the time and the Jay-Z diss kinda put him in a hole. However, Ether and Stillmatic released months later was the comeback and resurrected Nas’ career and respect levels across the Hip-Hop community.

I like reasonable doubt better personally. Less smooth but more of the lyrics are profound. During Blueprint 1 Jay is the master of the punchline smart enough to make you laugh, but not clever enough to need 3 listens.

In many ways, I feel Blueprint 1 and Stillmatic encapsulate the two careers better than any of their other albums. Jay-Z is so smooth you don't mind him pretty much just stunting for half the album with no real message. Beats are fire, flows are lava. Punchlines are knockout. Nas on the other hand shows some of the most insane creativity with Rewind, goes philosophical and political in the latter half, and with the depth of his penmanship (rule, every ghetto), you are almost willing to forgive Braveheart Party (or buy the version without it on). Today, I listen more to Stillmatic as a whole album, but probably more to Heart of the City than any of the other songs

there was also "You Wanna Be Me" from the _8 Mile_ soundtrack. I'm not sure if its an official Jay-Z diss as Nas never mentions or alludes to Jay in the song. Its mostly a 'diss with no name on it' but its potent and it was released during the era of their fued.

All I know is Takeover getting at 2 different rappers dropped summer of 2001 and it took Nas 6 months to drop Ether in December 2001. Then literally 24 hours later Jay drops a freestyle (Super Ugly). That’s my only knock on Nas is that he can’t freestyle off the top of the head and he got one monotone flow. Other than that I got Nas top 4 all time.

I haven't listened to this whole video yet but this album has 2 hidden tracks. After _Lyrical Exercise,_ its the _Girls, Girls, Girls (Remix)_ which was always a banger and an ironic way to end the album; the closing line of the album is a sample talking about not settling down until he found the right girl for him. Whats ironic about that is at this point Jay-Z had just started being publicly associated with Beyonce as Destiny's Child had just made an appearance in the "Izzo" video.

I haven't finished watching this whole video yet but this album has 2 hidden tracks. After _Lyrical Exercise,_ its the _Girls, Girls, Girls (Pt. 2)_ which was always a banger and an ironic way to end the album; the closing line of the album is a sample talking about not settling down until he found the right girl for him. Whats ironic about that is at this point Jay-Z had just started being publicly associated with Beyonce as Destiny's Child had just made an appearance in the "Izzo" video.

Nas won. Takeover was first, Jay sneak attacked Nas while Nas had stepped back from the rap game to take care of his mom who was dying of cancer. Jay even said he was laying a trap for Nas and Nas took the bait...only Nas came back with a ferocity that Jay didn't expect, and the term "ether" in its current form was born from the sheer destruction Nas caused with that song. People ran around for years saying "yeah but jay is richer so he won" which, A) stupid, what the fuck that has to do with rapping? but then B) Nas is mega rich now from various investments capped off recently by Coinbase. So that argument is out the window. And meanwhile, it's been 5 years since Jay last put out an album (4:44), and thank goodness it was a good album because over the last 16 years he's put out 5 albums and more of them have been bad than good (Kingdom Come, Blueprint 3, Magna Carta Holy Grail were all mid-to-weak at best) - meanwhile Nas dropped 3 fire albums in a row, 2 in the same year, and is only getting stronger. Basically time has proven Nas the prophet and the GOAT.

In response to 8:14 Jay-Z actually writes his lyrics in his head. He clarified this before that he's not freestyling/coming off the top. It's something you do when you hear the music and in my opinion flows better than when someone sits and writes their lyrics down on paper. I learned how to write in my head over 8 years ago and since then my flow always fuses with the music. A trick to memorization is to rhyme a lot and that way it's easier to remember the patterns and once you finish the verse you already have it memorized. When you record it doesn't sound like you're reading from a sheet of paper (or a phone these days) and trying to keep up with the beat (I can hear that with some rappers). Some rappers who sit and write everything tend to sound more robotic and they lack creative flows unless they connect with the music first by freestyling to it. Notable MCs who write rhymes in their heads (all the time or at least some of the time) include Styles P and Jadakiss, Tory Lanez, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, Rich Homie Quan, 2 Chainz, Lil Uzi and Future. I saw a video of T-Pain making a song live on Twitch the other day and he was making it up on the fly too so he probably is another one to add to the list since he can sing and rap. The Weeknd is another one who doesn't need to sit down and write to make a song, in fact he has an 8 min song from his second mixtape Thursday called "Gone" that he freestyled from beginning to end. I was so blown away that he could freestyle a full song like that and it inspired me to try writing at least half a verse in my head. Eventually I was able to write a full 16 bar verse then it got easier from there. Anyway if I can find the interview where The Weeknd talks about freestyling that song (not sure if it's in the full Complex interview) I'll post it. It's a good trippy kind of song to check out too. ***Found it. I wanted to post the full interview under your Take Care video but could only find the short version. Feel free to read the whole thing since it goes into the Drake stuff too. The Weeknd mentions freestyling a song under the question: In your mind, what was “The Ride” supposed to be? www.complex.com/music/2013/07/weeknd-interview-cover-story Edit: To help you out too Takeover came first then Ether then Super Ugly. It's funny, Nas made Ether the 2nd song on his album as well lol. Not sure if you ever reacted to Stillmatic but that'd be cool.
