Just for anyone who comes across this, the grounding strip is not making contact with the car at all even if you scrape back to bare metal so as it comes its pointless. I have the same unit (being a nerd) i decided to take the things apart and test grounding with my multi meter and found there is NO continuity between the copper tab and the circuit board due to the adhesive creating an insulating barrier ( which makes the ground pointless). Once i used acetone to remove the glue i was able to get continuity. My personal solution was to solder a wire to replace the tab and i will run a screw in. What others could do which is less invasive is remove the adhesive from the strip, scrape off the paint and use a small neodinium magnet to keep the bare copper touching the body of the car.

In my opinion the best way, is just invest in a dab roof aerial and run that into the usb dab. I have an ST3 which already has a dab roof aerial. So i had purchased an extension lead to go from the dab roof input to the usb dab, but unfortunately...... I got broken into and was never completed. And to this day, I still have not replaced.

You can flick between each function. I had mine on one of the buttons on the steering wheel

Have a similar unit in my ST. I went with the Carplay/Android Auto Dongle as that connects to Phone and gives Tunein Radio, Spotify, Google Maps, Waze etc. No need for any unsightly GPS and Aerial on the windscreen.

All of those use internet, if no internet, then no waze no Spotify and no google maps, while dab works offline

ive always found an antenna is only as good as the ground i scraped the paint off mine and it worked with no issuses

I had issues with window Ariel's so I used a universal omni directional mag mount roof antenna. but I will eventually get a splitter. so I can use the default ariel for both DAB and FM. - great video though much appreciated. I got an xtrons version of your unit with DAB module coming my way.

Just make sure you dont go for the lowest gb or it will struggle. The 1gb versions already have the pre installed apps and running system which takes up most of the memory.

@@slypig24 I have this ready to fit, but unfortunately the car got broken into and the android unit was stolen..... so didnt get a chance to complete.

I found that using a aerial splitter it work better of the aerial on the roof in my vauxhall

If you ground it on the paint, it won't make an electrical connection?

So ive just brought a xtrons unit with the dab dongle, do you have to download a dab app to get it to work?

I just purchased a dab stick for my Chinese Headunit and having reception issues, constant drops in a strong signal area.. I tried scraping paint off behind pillar to attach magnetic ground from aerial, it's made no difference. So am looking at other possible alternatives. Its driving me mad 🤣🤣 great video though

Probably best to get a dab aerial for the roof. Replacing your standard one and connect that to it...

What are the specs for that radio? How much ram?

Hey im having the same issue , my polo gti 2016 6c has a dab installed from factory & ive decided to get the stock headunit out & install the android 12 headunit , doing this seems to cancel out the cd player infotainment unit that sits in the glove box which used the Fakra adapters , the android unit i got came with the ariel cable with normal radio plug-in adapter & the othe end of that cable is two black adapters which have a single hole terminal in each of them, i purchased one of these dab+ usb sticks to add to the headunit for dab installation but watching your tutorial & you mentioning about the splitter antenna which is already in your car & maybe able to install the dab to the original layout in your car was what i was thinking to do aswell but havnt got round to attempting that , did you go down the route of linking it all to your existing antenna/dab ariels in the end?? If so was it easy to figure out ? Was there complications with the adapters to match up etc ?

Hi.. I didn't get the chance to use the dab input as I got broken into and stolen. I'm confident that if you have one and then use this, that then means you will be using the aerial on the roof for a better signal or you could get an aerial fin for the roof if you dont... you could even try this with putting in the glove box to see of that gives you a better signal.. i might be getting a new one soon for an updated video.. thanks

Lovely video. I would like to ask you something. I have an Android head unit, branded Erisin, I also have a DAB+ USB module really similar to yours, just with a different brand, but it looks the same device. I can hear DAB channels very well, but just when my car is standing stil. As soon as I start to drive, the unit struggles to follow the signal and it plays just horrible cracking and jittering noises. Do you have any opinion about it? Kind regards from SW London

Could be your aerial, worth looking at, especially if you have a small bee sting one, or maybe a booster... these might help. If you dont have a dab aerial then that's worth a go..

I found this was an issue on my Sony dab when I put the small one in. But I have an ST3 so I have the dab coming my the aerial, so I was going to hook that up to the dab usb. But I didnt get the chance to do this before I got broken into and stolen!! I would defo get a dab aerial base for the roof. You might still be able to us your smaller one, but this might increase the signal. You will then need an additional input to attached to this to reach the usb, depending on where you have it...... 👊

Quick question: if I buy a head android head unit, is the dab + necessary or can you use the android head unit computer it into your vehicle and just use it like that. Or does the dab + necessary.

Hello... you dont need the DAB. I had it running fine, just the dab signal was not very good with the small aerial. You can use a dab radio app if u have loads of data, which works really well

Awesome video I needed this. Just have 2 questions: 1) Can the original cars rooftop aerial be connected to the adaptor? 2) Are there any other apps that are compatible with the adaptor?

You can hook up a dab aerial or if you fave a st3, the aerial is already has a dab connector as well as an fm, you can buy a connector to meet with the dab usb..

Hey..... yes you can. And the voice for the maps then cuts in over the top. I guess you might be able to turn off the voice if not needed.

Hi.. a lot of people just put it to the side of the unit, it should just stick if remember as its magnised. Worth trying and see how the signal is before feeding through..... Worth getting a dab aerial and usb for this unit, the signal was not great. Unfortunately I didnt get the chance to try the dab set up fully as the car was broken into and the unit was stolen.

I think so... it was a while ago since I had this and some wanker broken into the car and stole it!! I think they wanted the car but it has security so doesnt start!! So they took the radio instead...

Some quick research and you'll find that they won't work with a polarised windscreen as well.....or a sun strip like in the video. And yoy should also check your area for dab coverage. Scotland and Wales have piss poor coverage. Also was your A pillar painted or raw.....some dab usbs want it to go on bare metal

Yes.. you need an extension connector... but I didnt manage to install mine before it got stolen!!

I've got this but found the single was up and down too much. So I just use mobile hot spot and downloaded a digital app and have shit loads of stations and never any signal problem

I’ve just received one of these dongles and Ariel, fitted it today, what a complete load of rubbish and a complete waste of money. The signal is all over the place. Constantly screeching because of no signal. It’s getting pulled out tomorrow. Can you recommend a good dab app for android.

I don't have this any more.. after installation the car got broken into and this was taken... therefore there was no future videos and I couldn't be bothered to replace...

Sorry for the late reply. You would not get a dab signal... best to buy a dab roof aerial... receive far better quality. Or use your phone app... but that uses data....

Just don't this on my own car, it certainly works but I do get signal drops even though it says 5 green bars which is full

You can change this to standard fm as you plus in the fm aerial as well...

To pick up dab you will need a usb adapter which is cheap, like £20 but to get a better dab signal I would change the aerial over on the roof to a dab one and run the cable to the dab usb rather than using the window antenna it comes with... Yes you do plug in your standard aerial so can use just fm. The other way, is an app, like tune in radio from play store and just use your phone data. This gives you clear and amazing sound with no drop out. Just using your phones data...

So my mk2 st3 comes already with the roof aerial which has two inputs, fm and dab. So I would suggest replacing your main aerial with a split option. The fm would just plug into the back of the android unit but you still need to have an dab usb to run dab, but you then connect one end to the dab aerial. My suggestion for having a roof one is only because the signal from the aerial the dab usb comes with is not great.

Just stream radio from your phone ffs
