I just got my first DaVinci paints recently, and made a color mixing chart. They lay down so smoothly, especially compared to the M. Graham chart I did the next day. They remind me of Schmincke, actually. They are always "on sale." I wrote an email with questions and received a reply from their CEO (they are a small family company). He confirmed they still have old stock of PB 33. I ordered directly from the company, and received my order very quickly. I normally avoid convenience mixes, but do enjoy unique ones, and they have several, such as Alizarin Gold and Gold Ochre; their Naples Yellow is an unusual mix with no black or white. They also have three shades of Ultramarine, and an unusual Cobalt Turquoise that's more like Cobalt Teal but made with PB 28. I will definitely be ordering some of those 37 mil tubes in the future (but they also have 8 mil tubes to try out colors!)

I personally love da vinci, top 3 for me... some colors number 1. Like the cadmium colors, they are so beautiful, vibrant and behave really well. I have cad scarlet and cad red deep on my main palette, I paint poppies a lot and cad scarlet and deep along with py150 make perfect poppy colors.

Cheap Joe's brand American Journey paints are also made by Davinci. The 37ml tubes are even cheaper than the Davinci tubes. If a color is super important to you, check the pigment numbers for both brands. If the numbers match, usually they are the same quality. I've only ever seen a difference in the most expensive paints to make. Otherwise it's impossible to tell the difference. My favorite colors of the brands are Pr209, Quin Red and Pb60 Indanthrone blue. Just gorgeous and both are great mixers. Fantastic video! New subscriber now. ❤️

I thoroughly enjoy watching you swatch colors! Your precision is refreshing. Da Vinci makes my top three in paint brands (with W&N and Van Gogh holding the top spots). In the US, you can’t beat the value on these paints. They don’t have a flashy color range but they carry all of the staple hues at a much better price that either Daniel Smith or M Graham which I would class as their closet competition. Their Red Rose Deep is my favorite Quin Rose in all of the paints that I have. I’m so interested to see how their Aureolin fades out. The PY40 pigments tends to grey as it fades, so it would be interesting to see how the PY3 part of that shade looks after the PY40 has faded out. And I agree that the Da Vinci Cerulean Blue Genuine is lovely. I need to find occasion to use it more.

@@JayNathanWatercolor I agree for me number 1 is the artist grade brand that offers the best value in my country too. For example where I live I really only consider Rembrandt watercolors. They cost just over 4$ to 5,5$ per 10ml tube which is amazing. The next best thing would probably be Van gogh which are usually half the price of Rembrandt. Form artist grade paints I also love Sennelier and Schmincke Horadam while brands from outside Eu are far more expensive, but are really fun to try and collect :D

I love the Phaloturquise, PB16 because it is not a blend but one pigment and makes awesome greens and it transparent. Acts like cobalt turquoise deep without being more opaque and granulating. Daniel Smith labels it as Phalo blue turquoise. Give it a try with new gamboge or Hansa yellow deep or quinacridone gold. I don’t use the less lightfast colors in my palette than the Hansa yellow deep which is a bit more lightfast than light Hansa yellow. I substitute regular azo yellow and use cad lemon for the lighter ones but all DaVinci. They stay more plump when I put them in the whole pans than Daniel Smith. Again and again I have had to refill the Daniel Smith pans and for the many gradations I much prefer DaVinci and the value is a good one.

I do like Da Vinci's watercolors. I have a set that includes Denise's green instead of sap. It's not my go to set for most things, but sometimes I get it out to play around with. They rewet beautifully. I don't buy replacement tubes that often but I think every time I've ever gone to their website they've had sale prices, much like Blick's. Glad you liked them and kudos to whoever sent them to you. I've never met a cobalt violet that I could stand, no matter the brand. Nasty gloppy mess that is. lol

There is something about PR88 that I love and Da Vinci is one of the very few that still uses it. They also have a version that uses more of the PR88 and less of the PV19 called Thioindigo Violet (which is also the name of the PR88 pigment itself). Unfortunately PR88 is not as lightfast as the Quins. Da Vinci gives the mixes a II rating versus the I rating of the straight Quins, which isn't too bad. That PB36 looks really nice. QoR has my favorite Nickel Azo Yellow - less of the brown tones than the Da Vinci in the thinner washes. It positively glows!

They do ship internationally from their website, the problem is the shipping is extremely expensive ($35 flat to where I live. I don't know if it's the same for all countries). If you place a bigger order, and depending on your local import taxe policy, it might still be worth it. And since they sell 37ml tubes, it's not something you need to restock on often

@@JayNathanWatercolor You’re right. However, she started using DS and Da Vinci while living in the US (Santa Barbara) and she pushed for both brands to be sold at a store while living in Singapore. When somebody asked about Da Vinci, even though there is a liaison with DS as you say, she praised Da Vinci for their quality. I was surprised she did given her history with DS. Bundell started painting in watercolors with DS many years before she became involved with the company. The fact that she acknowledges Da Vinci I found to be a good sign. In Australia all watercolors are very expensive, so badly that Cotman is a treat for those who can afford to buy this brand.

  • @Adoratek

Ahhh Da Vinci... What can I say? Almost any artist who has a desire to seek out what they like and works best for them has, or will finally come to the place of confession about their love affair with Da Vinci watercolors. Da Vinci is like that hometown family girl that not many will acknowledge or speak about much, because she doesn't make a scene or a big parade. She's the girl that knows how to get things done, meet all your needs, and do it with such efficiency and grace that it fits right into life, and she doesn't have to brag about it. Da Vinci is quiet... A graceful and well behaved girl that keeps turning Arthur's head for a second look, although Arthur is married to Daniella Smith, a high maintenance dame who likes flashy marketing, and likes to spend money on shiny little trinkets and souvenier eye candy. But Arthur is afraid to leave Daniella, because there may be social consequences... What would high society say? Arthur feels like he has so much invested in Daniella that he couldn't just shake off the dame that's running up his credit cards and making him go broke. But of course, Arthur has had these fantasies about foreign girls too... French, German, British, Dutch... All of them lovely and cultural in their own light. But he has that sobering realization that long distance relationships are expensive, and hard to maintain. Still, Arthur takes little strolls down the street... hoping by chance that he will catch another glimpse of the beautiful Da Vinci girl quietly sitting at the porch swing, harmoniously painting a picture of life all on her own.😉

I have a da vinci series 35 kolinsky brush and it is one of my best (second to only a Japanese hand made brush. But these Japanese brushes belong to out-of-this-world category). To my eyes, their watercolor is also of high quality. I think in general, Da Vinci, DS, M. so i have a set of these... and while good, the TRANSPARENCY labelling is frustrating, and also very *inaccurate* . commonly they call most colors transparent when in fact they are semi-transparent or flat out opaque. : ( i got a set of 10 tubes and the light yellow is definitely NOT transparent, nor is the light blue, and it's super obvious. i'm painting over linework, so it matters. --- i think if you are painting and not using linework you'll probably really like these. for TRANSPARENCY, probably have to go over to WN Cotman (v nice), or Schmincke Akademie (love those). ---- MISSION GOLD is way better imo, IF you need a line with versatility such as transparency and accurately have that labelled on paints. WHITE NIGHTS, same. and i believe both of those are on the lower cost end... though MGOLD for me is about the same as DA VINCI in the states, at least some of the tubes. DV are nice and also accurate.
