Da Vinci Watercolor Review | Swatches, Painting Demonstration, and AJ Comparison

Hello! Today we are taking a look at the Da Vinci watercolors. They are an extremely affordable professional line of watercolor with good vibrancy and transparency. In this video I'm going to talk a bit about the company, swatch out my selection of colors from viewer Victor, and take a look at them against American Journey watercolors.

... After more years of researching, watching reviews, as much as I have the sense and knowledge, than I have to say, that these paints seem to be the best at appearance. The clearance, the quality in general, the balance alongside all the colours looks absolutely exceptional. Daniel Smith also amazing, especially the Primatek series, furthermore the M.Graham, however M.Graham perhaps a bit more robust and saturated, yet really good for mixing. Schminke is smooth, buttery but less vivid than the previous ones. Winsor & Newton also a first class paint, very traditional, one of the best in Europe. Sennelier is more vivid, also smooth, easy flowing, lovely to mix or layering them. I am sure that there is NO any universal watercolour products which are useful for everything equally, however D.S has the most wide range of paints and the quality of them is superb. Well, we should also conciderate, what kind of paper we are going to use ( HP or CP, smooth or raw ) what is the subject, what exactly we want to paint, what kind of technique will be used ( for example: washing or glazing ) if we wanted completely transparent pigments or even half or full opaque paints to add either. Overall, probably all of them suitable enough to PRACTICE and achieve artistic goals by them. I don't believe that cheap and non quality products are suitable enough, even not for beginners. Need really good tools, paper, paint from the beginning. Painting must be fun and true happiness. :) Great video, Thanks for sharing :)

Very good explanation..after owning , switching and using all of the above mentioned plus paints not mentioned ie Old Holland , mission gold, etc. Only thing I could add is that paper makes a real difference. ARCHES is now my stand by but still test new to me, such as baohong( the jury is still out) and soft press forgot manufacturer ,and jury still out on that one too because I can't paint for any amount of time. Anyway....happy painting.

Private label manufacturing is commonly a customized version of the main company's product line. So I would be surprised if Cheap Joe didn't want to have special mixes and exclusive names and colors. I think American Journey asks the Da Vinci paint line to make a lot of convenience mixes and maybe add new pigments or mixes, but there are also a lot of similariites. I know that Blockx makes Stephen Quiller paints, and have heard that Grumbacher makes Blick watercolor paint, so it seems to be a natural thing with artist paints. I've worked both sides of private label creation when I was an apparel designer. We would customize our brand's seasonal lines to fit a client's needs and substitute fabrics, edit the size range, and even add a few special signature products that complemented the client's brand point of view. They could be sold nationally, locally or internationally only depending on the needs. For instance, we often did private label versions of women's clothing for southwest and southeast markets, using lighter fabrics, brighter color palettes and different trims. It was still less expensive than creating a new line from scratch, and it gave us designers new insight into a small but distinct market. I also commissioned private label lines from other companies if we wanted to capitalize on a trend, but didn't want to invest in developing the patterns and fabrics ourselves. It's a pretty symbiotic relationship. I know this is an older video, but thought I could add another perspective. I love Da Vinci paints, and would buy the AJ versions if I needed a color they carry.

So temping! Thank you for showing this. This is one of the few brands I have never tried. I'm a watercolor paint junkie and have been totally absorbed with the pigments within the tubes and how they are made and where the pigments come from since I started watercolor 10 years ago. I appreciate your interest in the pigment codes and numbers because I'm the same way. Unfortunate I spent more time doing that than painting for too long.

It has been a year since this video and review you should reconsider maybe even review Denise’s palette! This would be better for the paints as well as less self serving than Denise doing a review of her own Palette! Please think about reviewing these paints and maybe a review of the Earth friendly palette!

This was super interesting and helpful, thank you very much! Recently I tried some American Journey, was very impressed, so of course started wondering how the Da Vinci compared. Except for the quin gold, looks like DV is an even better value. YAY. That being said, I have indrathrone blue by several manufacturers and sad to say, NOTHING compares to the one made by daniel smith. Everybody else might as be making just a regular and boring dark blue whereas the DS is absolutely magical. But see, now that I've found a more economical brand where I can finally paint without worrying about the cost, I can afford to use a few special dan smith with (almost) the same exuberance. Thanks again! :-)

The prices seem quite reasonable, with the discount it is under$10 a tube! If you get the metal tin please be sure to show us. It looks so pretty, it is grey. Interesting information concerning Da Vinci paints and American Journey paints being the same. Both are essentially impossible to purchase for good value without being hit with import duty here in Europe, but is there a noticeable price difference between the two? Similarly, is there a big price difference between Jackson's paints and Sennelier paints? That Alizarin Gold is a pleasant colour. Further research shows it is a mix of PR177 (Anthraquinoid Red in Daniel Smith) and PY42 (usually Yellow Ochre in most brands). I think Raw Sienna and Perylene Maroon in my palette will get me a similar colour. It is also quite curious that this company shares the same name as the wonderful German brush makers, Da Vinci Defet, which is based in the lovely city of Nürnberg in Germany. They're definitely not the same company though, despite the shared name. Thank you for the very informative video, Denise. It is always fabulous to see different and exotic paints that are difficult to obtain in Europe. It seems that these would represent excellent value for you, especially considering Da Vinci paints are based in California.
