D7 First Start in 25 years!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Gil Szabo's dad was a heavy duty mechanic and maintained this early D7 very well. Gil says it has been around 25-30 years since the machine ran and all attempts to start the tractor failed because the pony wouldn't fire because of the angle it was parked.
Several months ago I was able to get the pony running with my brother Anthony but the main engine was seized and would stall the pony in low range at full power. After some research I decided to fill the cylinders with a 1:1 mixture of ATF and diesel through the exhaust from the top. It took around 20 liters before the mixture began pouring out of the air cleaner connections. This meant that the cylinders with open valves were full and because oil beginning to pour out of the intake - both intake and exhaust valves were open/overlapping in at least one hole.
After letting it sit for about one week I returned and started the pony and the engine still would not budge and stalled the pony at full speed. After 4 weeks I returned, started the pony and the engine broke free but would not turn over fully with decompressor lever in on, half or run position. I suspected it was hydro-locking because it stopped abruptly. I did not attempt to turn it over again until consulting Chico, heavy duty mechanic and fellow Cat D2 owner. He suggested pulling the injectors, and we built a 1 3/4" deep injector socket but it was not the correct size. We pulled off the valve cover and checked the function of the valve train and decided to loosen off the brass exhaust manifold nuts and drained off the excess diesel and oil. We did the same for the intake manifold at the air cleaner elbow.
We changed the oil in the pony and checked that the fuel rack was free. As soon as the big 4 cylinder engine fired up, the ground began to shake and the engine hood at-top the cage, fell down cutting my hand slightly and bending the camera tripod. We haven't found the serial numbers yet but there is a lot of green pain under the hand painted yellow. Any ideas were to look?

You know she's true old iron when she's got a pony motor! Great job getting this old girl up and running! Nothing is built as good as it was back then so we gotta keep saving this stuff. Thanks for doing your part, and I hope no one was hurt from engine guard falling off at the end!

Hi folks , made for great viewing 👌 well done she runs thanks for sharing 👍
After a reluctant start, the donkey motor had the best work-out of its life! Well done, gentlemen. Many would have loved it and left long since.
Most intense old start cold start I've seen!
That ending was hilarious. That old girl didn’t like getting woke up.
Wow, what an action packed ending.
Impressive! But that ending sure was a shock! Wow
What an ending, hope you're not hurt - it looked awesome, quite the reflexes

The ending of your vid was a really unexpected twist , reflexes of cat Brilliant
When they get the good fuel , eh. Hope that didn't hurt too much. You'll rember to put panel where it can't fall on you next time. Good work.
In the excitement Safety always gets over looked... but hey seems you survived and uploaded great video.. hope your dignity is still intact.. But I bet you will never forget to secure loose items again...
Keep the good work up!! 👏
Very entertaining 👏. Had to watch the ending 30 times couldn't stop laughing. Glad you are okay.

Loved the mornings when the tracks were frozen and the crank handle kicked back and slammed your hand against the roll bar lol 😂 learned a whole new language
This was really awesome! I grew up in rural upstate New York close to the Canadian border, this made me miss my Canadian friends from the great white North! Beauty day, eh?!
The most favourite machine I have ever run was a 1968 D-7E. Thank God the pony had an electric start but that machine was a beast. You could haul it down so low you could count the cylinders popping off but it would just keep pushing. It had a leaky final drive that we put a special brew of 80-90 gear oil with a tube of grease mixed in to slow down the leaking.
@AxleHildebrand
Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. Adding grease to slow an oil leak is a heck of a lot better than running low on oil.
Good bonnet flying .classic so luv the health an safety .it's what fun .all about .the camera still Peking through exhaust hole 😂
Why cat got rid of those pony motors I will never know. They were invaluable to get a diesel running in the arctic. Crank up the pony, go back in the cook shack for 20 minutes ,have a coffee then come out and engage the pony in low and get things rotating, go back in the cook shack, have a coffee and a donut then come out and fire the old girl up.Two big smoke rings later and you were ready to go!
The serial number is stamped into the rear of the cat on the very back plate where the winch would go. looks to be a 3T or very early 17A. I think I may have a shop manual
Crazy mechanics!
You turned your fuel on to soon. You need to give the starting engine time enough to warm the big engine. At least you didn't load it up with starting fluid.

Great expertise
Cat’s made good dozers I use get very frustrated starting them in my youth , don’t want anything to do these anymore now I put in the key start the machine and go to work case closed .
The ones that cranked through the side would cut your fingers off if it kicked back and your hand was wrapped around the crank. It could take fingers of if it hit a cleat or damn sure smash your fingers if it hit in between cleats
Sounds like you got the starting transmission and low need to put it in high to turn the motor or fast enough
Didn't know that the D7's had pony motors, thought only the D8's and D9's had them. Learn something new everyday.

A little heavy oil in each spark plug hole, take the battle out of it when starting pony.
Wow what an ending is he ok?
That was real!
My dad ran these things in s Texas when he was in his teens. I'm 50. Won a bet because I knew how to start a pony engine cat a few years ago...
Interesting start up all you need is providing you have fuel flow at injectors is to bring oil pressure up on half compression and then open it to full compression and it should start so simple. It will not start until oil pressure comes up and throttle is opened😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I noticed your mate finally opened the throttle and it fired. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 good job its a learning experience

A shot of ether early on would have started it 15 minutes earlier, When the pony motor is running and not not turning the diesel engine no coolant is going through the pony engine and it will get very hot very fast the Diesel engines water pump supplies the coolant to the pony motor
I don't care what anyone says no computer = no problems not easily fixed that old cat will still run 50 years from now just keep engine from getting water in it and your good
Could've ended badly. Glad it didn't.
14:42 did you hear someone shout “incoming”🤣🤕
Crazy they used those little gas pony motors to crank those old diesels
I got killed , almost . . Hilarious 😆
I'm not so sure that's a D7. Looks small. Anyone??
I was in my shorts one summer starting dads the magneto shorted out thru the tracks a shot of extreme electricity shot from my nuts out my ass it blew off my loggers hard had I was electro man for some time.and it was worse than getting hit by lightning years before.my dad couldn't stop laughing rip pops

The 1945 Caterpillar diesel D7 tractor serial number 3T2707 was parked on a slight grade for decades. Once the massive 13.6 litre 4 cylinder D8800 engine fired up it caused the engine bonnet to slide across the top and crash down nearly injuring me and damaging my tripod and camera in the process.

Why are there numerous expensive machines on KZread which seem to be lying unused for 20, 30, 40 years waiting for a start. Bs

Hey Mad Farmer, yeah there's a lot of b.s. out there when it comes to modern equipment and what to do with potentially good old machines. This D7 was destined to the metal recycle yard a long time ago but was immune due to its remote location. It was not worth scrapping due to high recovery and hauling costs associated with the fact it was a dead crawler machine. As a matter of fact, the fellow who informed me of this D7's location is a metal recycler himself and despite efforts, he was unable to get it running to track down the mountain and haul away. Most the iron I hoard isn't expensive or viable on a modern jobsite because lack of modern safety equipment and the EPA environmentalists. Too many pesky leaks and some factory drains that literally flow onto the ground.
That is not a d7. All y'all did was push the air through the fuel system an electric starter could not have taken that👆
Guy in black doesnt know what hes doing it seems. End tumble waiting to happen. Its a wondet the pony put up eith ot
A very primitive poor design for starting large ci diesel motors,The IH gas start diesels were way superior in cold weather. Can you imagine having to do this every freezing morning in the 50's in the High Sierras?
Man cranking doesn't know to crank nor does the one telling him lucky it doesn't kick back break his arm yea cranks better with fuel would not either around my old cats, was the throttle open or closed or no fuel

Sorry but could you get a little more organized. Oh my goodness you act like you haven’t been around engines before. It was like watching larual and hardy
For those pony motors sure are pieces of crap what a horrible way to build an engine he is some total crappy built little motor to try and get your other engine to start.... And all that blues smoke boy that motor was burning more oil than anything I've ever seen and actually running that's the crazy part about it....the pony motor was so wore out that it made the other motor look good and it was putting out black smoke.
