There is an interesting story of the first meeting of Dev Saheb and Guru Dutt. The credit for giving Guru Dutt a break as a director is also given to Dev Saheb. There is an interesting story behind this. It was around 1940. When Dev Saheb came to Mumbai i.e. Bombay, he stayed with his elder brother Chetan Anand. And he had to go to Prabhat Studio in connection with a film. At that time, there was only one laundry in this area, where Dev Anand used to get his clothes washed. When he reached the laundry that day, his clothes were missing. Dev reached the studio wearing different clothes. Going there, he saw that a boy was wearing the same clothes which had gone missing from the laundry. He went to the boy and said, 'Dude, your clothes look very nice, where did you get them from?' The boy replied, 'It is not mine, today when I went to the laundry, he had not washed my clothes. I found these clothes nice there, so I brought them.' Dev Anand liked the candor and truthfulness of this boy very much. This boy was none other than Guru Dutt Saheb. It was from here that their friendship started and I promised Guru Dutt that whenever I make my first film, you will direct it. Along with acting, Dev Saheb was also very interested in writing and direction. Dev Saheb, in the initial phase of his film career, in the year 1949, he started his own production company by the name of Navketan Films. And Dev Saheb kept the promise made to Guru Dutt as soon as he opened the production company. When Dev Anand made his first production film 'Baazi', its director was Guru Dutt.
Zeenat Aman says in the TV program that it is about those days when Dev Saheb used to drink lassi at a lassi vendor's shop when he used to come from Lahore to Jalandhar on business.
