The Lab NYC is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly afterwork party where we stream the best American and international DJs from the intimate space connected to our Brooklyn office.
Since his 2008 debut on Stones Throw Records, Damon "Dam Funk" Riddick has earned himself the prestige of a true pioneer in classified funk. Originally from California, the producer and vocalist drew heavy influences from a range of different artists, everyone from Egyptian Lover to Prince.
He dubs his distinctive brand as "modern funk", a sophisticated take on the classic genre with a tinge of underground.
Funk boasts an impressive resumé of fans, with names like Hudson Mohawke and Snoop Dogg reaching out for collaborations and tour support for Erykah Badu and Flying Lotus.

Hey negative trolls.. YOU try playing all wax, with live musicians on most every song in the set, without Serato, no computer & no CDJ's & most definitely no pre-recorded mix + shades on. He did his thing HIS WAY and it was a party, the whole night through. Hello? Buh, bye..

Agreed there are no safety nets with vinyl. Also with live musicians on vinyl they can phase in and out of time unlike beat tracks made by computers. That adds tremendously to the difficulty. You can beat match to perfection and still have tracks go out of match even when you are spot on. Love the set.

This reminds me of the early 80s. So natural and unpretentious. I like that he sometimes holds up records that contain the songs he plays. It adds another dimension to the ambience and it makes him more personable and warm towards the crowd. He also provides a dynamic range in genres, not just sophisticated, electronic or hard-core funk. I prefer the latter but you have to mix things up like he's doing so that the music doesn't get tiring or overdone.

REALLY digging the light projections on the walls! Does anyone know what they might be using to map those lines? I've seen some Processing sketches that do somewhat similar things, but this is so simple and dynamic, you could use it for all kinds of things. Very cool.
