D.Gray-Man is Really Good

Фильм және анимация

D.Gray-Man is a series that flies under the radar, being largely ignored by the mainstream. Despite this, the manga has become somewhat of a cult classic. Ignored by the many but beloved by the few. I finally decided to take my first steps down the D.Gray-Man rabbit hole, I've only read 50 chapters and I'm already loving it. This might be the absolute peak of Shonen manga, but maybe I'm overstepping.

Caught up with both. Allen and Asta (their place in their respective stories are quite similar and taking all that Allen is used more with the plot of the story compared to Asta) D.Gray-Man and Black Clover since you've brought it up do seem similar in some ways just that asta has life opening for him and slowly give him what he wants While Allen is losing more and more and life seems to be closing for him as he loses what he had regained So far that's how they seem

Black clover is not good... haven't watched the anime but I've read every chapter. It's entertaining, not good. Anime to anime d gray man isn't crazy but the manga is wild at this point. Black clover is extremely mid. Predictable, overdone, nothing new. D gray man starts out kinda similarly but grows very strongly.

I personally love D Gray Man, it has such a unique lore that not many people will get into because it comes into play later in the story. D Gray Man had been one of my favorite shounens for a "long time". Allen Walker was/is the ideal righteous protagonist any shounen ever had. I would say there are other examples today, but his good nature was so touching. No Manga before gave me so much chills and brought me to tears (attack on the headquarters for example). But! At some point i really lost sight of the series, because of the very large time release shifts of volumes in our country (at least). I also found it a pity that the tone of the series changed completely at some point. There where more comedic panels IN emotional scenes and the Art Style got more lighter and had less the gothic nature of the previous volumes/chapters (so it lost a lot of atmosphere in my view). So overall, i would say its one of the best shounens but not the best shounen (for me). But, tbf, i didnt wrote the newest chapters because i thought once a time "yeah i wait til many chapters came out so i can read through them later", and yeah i lost track on that. Anyway, sorry for the long comments. Its a very good video! :D

You didn't fully understood the point of Mater arc, it seems. It was introduction and explanation of conflict of views between Kanda and Allen. Which later was resolved in Second Exorcist arc, when Allen eventually saved Alma and Kanda, freeing them from Order. Though, funnily, readers can only appreciate hints and foreshadowing about Kanda's past only with knowledge they gain later, but for me it's actually what makes a good writing, when you can reread previous chapters and be like 'Oh, I see why characters behave like that'. Even Allen's sacrificial nature was fully explained only in recent chapters, turns out, it wasn't only because of guilt for turning Mana in Akuma, it started even before what. So a lot of things packed in interaction of Allen and Kanda in Mater arc, so it's one of my fave arc actually. And Kanda wasn't even shown to be cold? He lets out his emotions pretty easily, and it's visible he is actually caring person. He was even okay with giving Lala and Guzol more time before things turned to worst, and never forced Allen to stop Lala in the end, when there was no danger, even trying to console him in his own way. He is clearly have priorities, which is his survival, and his fellow exorcists. He was angry at Allen because of what, because Allen was willing to sacrifice himself, not because of the mission. Calling him coldhearted typical archetype character seems to be a joke to me. Or you just didn't paid any attention to him at all, to think about him like that.

You obviously have read more of D.Gray-Man but you seem to expect me to have the same level of knowledge about the future of their character arcs as you. That’s not how it works, I can only describe their characters as I see them for the first 50 chapters. I understood the arc just fine. It just wasn’t that interesting & pales in comparison to most of the other arcs that I read. Kanda is a seemingly cold hearted character (using it as a façade to cover up some obvious trauma) in the chapters that I talked about, if he mellows out later than I’ll find that out when I get to it.

I think you got bad responses to this video because you're far too early in to really review dgm. I get the point of an early impressions review but it kind of only works for more predictable series inherently, which makes it extremely ironic when some of your criticism seems like you're expecting it to be predictable. No hate for the concept! I just think you created a catch 22 there. There aren't many people who talk about dgm on KZread so it will be kind of disappointing to a lot of people to see someone review it based on only 50 chapters: and actually this is what I thought about with your description of Crowley's introduction despite you really enjoying it! Essentially, what these arcs do isn't just introduce characters and their personality but they're all building up the themes or central conflict for the rest of the series, which is with the order and how exactly they should be fighting. Allen is shown seeing the tormented souls in the akuma, Crowley's shown falling in love with an akuma, the Lala arc shows them fighting over taking back innocence when it is essentially killing a sentient being with her own loved ones, and of course Suman Dark shows the order's way of recruiting plus the need to keep relatives in the dark about even exorcists' deaths and corpses has led to more suffering when Tyki Mikk takes advantage of it. So describing anything as episodic in it is a bit weird. I think this is especially a natural impression for people since the anime covered so much extra material while they waited for new chapters from Hoshino, so it feels EVEN MORE episodic there and then cuts out before the plot has time to come together. But I don't think the early arcs in the manga timeline are as episodic as it seems at first, later on Kanda's flashbacks are built up to an arc, Crowley's motivation by the akuma comes back, Allen's eye is used in pivotal moments plus we now feel more and more mystery about what that curse actually is(still not revealed but it's far more complicated than it seems). Lenalee's past is revealed and her motivation will probably change, Allen's motivation changes massively as he develops, and you get more and more of the noahs' perspectives starting from the Noah's Ark arc, which is... More or less I think where the ongoing plot and tone are really set for the rest of it. You're not really seeing why they're great antagonists because you don't get their pov until the exorcists' position is more complicated. It's important to note that dgm is currently at chapter 249, so that means about the latter half is where the plot really heads off, according to Hoshino she's up to halfway through completing it, we don't know how likely it is she'd be able to from that but I believe she has the ability to finish it since she did what most big mangaka haven't, paced herself before her disabilities became too bad to draw, relearned EVERYTHING she does with her other hand around midway, and is now using a lot of digital art in pretty advanced ways compared with most mangaka(or even all??? I don't know of any mangaka who uses so much software so creatively and it doesn't really look like she's trying to be a digital artist if you know what I mean, she does different art media such as collages and stuff I think and also has some much simpler short stories for personally motivated stuff like her cat passing away). Basically I hope she'll keep going because I don't really know about any mangaka with as healthy a career progression with their disabilities than hers and think it's beautiful in itself. I mean. She relearned how to draw it with her non dominant hand and became better. I think that's amazing.

I really lost interest when I got Kandas back story. I thought the whole thing was contrived and I felt nothing and Kanda was my favorite character, I also thought they rushed the characters that where just introduced (don't want to spoil but if you read that arc you'll know what I mean). I also disliked that art change looks too pretty and not a gothic, I think the previous art work looked a lot more fitting for the story and characters.
