I first saw this move when I was 9 years old and did not understand who Robert Mitchum was portraying (only "real person" I recognized in the film was the actor playing Eisenhower). As an adult, I have read several accounts of General Cota's leadership and actions on that beach that morning. They could not have picked a better actor to play Cota than Mitchum. He should have received some type of an Academy Award.

The guy Robert Mitchum played was then Brig. Gen Norman Cota aka Dutch and he WAS there all the way to the end...he commanded an infantry division until the war end.

Yes, you are right. Mitchum in his laconic, matter-of-fact, naturally machismo manner steals the whole epic movie in this last great line of the film, as only Mitchum can.
