When you visit the bridge (on an early misty morning) you see just how close the landing area was from the bridge itself.

Dear Sir, I can tell you I was at the Pegasus Bridge memorial on the 4th of June. We went to the Pegasus Bridge cafe a old lady was serving us from behind the counter I spoke to her in French told me it was her dad that owned the cafe and she was his daughter Madame Arlette Gondrée she was four years old when, on the night of 5 June 1944 as they hid in the basement. also along with her sister and mother. Soldiers crashed outside and the D Company commander along with another shoulder entered through a window walking in the dining room above their heads and tempted them out of the basement with chocolate after being scared hearing all the noise and shouting bangs outside. Then she told me daddy then opened the door and then more people came in . Then one told him Its OK we have arrived we are British. She then told me her dad then said to the commander what can we do for you, The house then became a first aid station. her mother was a trained nurse , she said her parents was asked if they had alcohol they said yes , Then daddy dug up the supply in the garden not just Champaigne but other spirits. They used then the alcohol to treat the wounded who were laying on the kitchen table and sitting up in chairs all around the room. It was the solders who drunk the Champaigne, She remembers holding the hands of some the solders as they lay wounded in the house and smiling, Her mother a trained nurse helping with the medical people with them, Operations was even carried out on the kitchen and the next man brought in, Many men survived as her mother was a trained nurse and they had a good supply of alcohol to treat wounds. she then also told me the wooden sign outside with the Pegasus bridge logo was put up soon after the battle and been replaced over the years, She told me she has met many of the solders from that night over the years, We then spoke in English she said my English was to good and asked me if I was from Portsmouth I said no, I am from Le Rochel , Asked me why I was in Normandy I told her for the 80th and I will be reading a speech live on TVF1 France in English. She told me she was 85, I did order a croissant and a coffee I asked how much, She would not except any payment but told me if I saw any veterans from the UK to head to her caffe. and to tell if any one visits at any time and has served or has some link to the Oxfordshire and Light infantry they will get a warm welcome. at anytime of the year. Then she just turned around and disappeared into the back, leaving the employed staff of the caffe to continue working. what a encounter so lucky to meet with her ,

I was called up for National Service 10 years later (1954) and from day one we were not allowed to shorten the name of the regiment. It was always Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in full so thank you for not shortening it. “Oxford and Bucks” was tolerated but not encouraged. “Ox and Bucks” or, even worse, “OBLI” or, worse still “Obbly” was a punishable offence. One of the corporals in the training company had been at Pegasus bridge but I can’t remember his name. As an eighteen year old I was not as aware of the significance what I now appreciate

Nice one Keith. A concise overview. I believe that one of the Op Tonga gliders landed in Hampshire when its tow failed. Apparently, another glider took off minus one bloke who legged it just before take off. At a subsequent court martial he stated that he had a premonition about dying in a glider crash. I've had the privilege of visiting Pegasus bridge several times, firstly as a JINF in 1976. They were highly trained, brave blokes in 1944, regardless of cap badge.

Dear Mick , without doing a 100% check, off the top of my head Para Pay was 2/6 (half-a-crown) a week. As far as I remember Glider Troops received half that amount per week , 1/3 , (one and three) . So they did get a wee bit extra at pay parade.

Technically D Co. Ox & Bucks LI were a cherry picked company made up of volunteers from the entire Battalion. Many men were transferred to other companies and the glider troops trained heavily in glider assault and specifically trained to take the bridge. I have always felt for Lt. Den Brotheridge who after a huge amount of training was killed almost immediately. To me this highlights the random aspect of combat. Great video Keith, well done.

My Father was Oxford and Bucks light infantry Regimental Sargeant Major,He defended a Bridge at Hozenbrook German armour was trying to get across to head for the beaches at Dunkirk, A British infantry unit held off a German armoured unit for 24 hours giving valuable time for evacuation of the beaches my father lost 17 of his comrades in his platoon and later mentioned in dispatches, The Germans after they captured them called them Men of Steel I would safely say that light infantry units were as good as the Paras or the Marines when it came to Infantry tactics and fighting...........They were not called light infantry for nothing. As they proved yet again on Pegasus Bridge.
