I would also highly recommend people take the opportunity if they can to locate the ravenloft monsters compendium inserts from 2nd edition as they not only provide a number of Gothic horror monsters that are vampire or vampire adjacent in nature but it provides specific breakdown of vampires of species other than human.

I’m actually workshopping a group of Vampires, who- well, their leader decided the most ambitious way to hold power was to establish an actual community of vampires who love him and serve his goals. It also warded off loneliness. But after the Big Lore Event in the past, their society got pushed underground, literally. Took their coffins underground in the caves where they set up a little hamlet. They’ve tried their best to spruce it up. One of the vampires was a stone-worker who got sick and was saved from death, so long as they’d serve their vampire lord, of course. The houses carved in the cave walls are very nice, very beautiful. But, they are dissatisfied. After a disastrous human hunt years back, they determined hunting above ground too dangerous, so they haven’t tasted human blood in ages. They subsist on cave critters and things coming up from the Underdark. They are pissed, and they are getting ready to rise. (There’s this evil vampire cleric, it’s a whole thing) The only indicator vampires are still around in the world is that sometimes expensive shit will go missing when it’s in transport in the area near the cave’s entrance. And tales of attacks decades back. It’s a work in progress, but I’m widdling away at this world alone, so… lol

Love these videos RL! I agree with everything you describe about vamps. I would just add this: they are a paradox. Unliving yet driven by a subconscious need to survive--they are creatures that are, to some extent, ones borne of trauma and believe that anything in service to insulating them from danger and increasing their chances to survive is paramount, whether they acknowledge it or not. Please keep up the excellent work, as I have marveled at the efforts you have put into making these lore works come to life.

For the observatory lair, the "Cosmic Whisper" lair action? Vampires studying and probing the cosmos for arcane knowledge? Now in what mythos have I heard of this trope? 🤔 Yeah...that's just BEGGING for a Lovecraftian treatment. Definitely gives off that "Mad Arab" vibe... I would be such a ruthless DM with this. Not enough for the table to rage quit, but close enough. I mean...could you imagine hearing the whispers of Yog-Sothoth? Or the phrase "Have you seen the Yellow Sign?" uttered in every language in existence? Or how about EXTREMELY manipulative utterings of Nyarlathotep, the "Crawling Chaos"? And I don't care HOW powerful vampires and liches are---NOBODY BEATS CTHULU let alone Nyarlathotep. NOBODY. As for the vampires living there? They ain't exactly immune to the madness the Outer Gods, Elder Gods and Great Old Ones induce when interacted with them. Some go insane faster than others, but in true Lovecraftian fashion...ALL WILL SUCCUMB. EVENTUALLY. Guess they shouldn't have been poking around in the cosmos. That's just screaming "Fuck Around and Find Out"! H.P. Lovecraft style. It's all fun 'n games 'til Azatoth wakes up...

I think it would be really interesting to make a vampire out of a Barbarian with a head injury. Just 4 int and perpetual rage, going berserk. Maybe he was someone's underling and they died so he's just on the loose, causing problem. Maybe not a Big Bad, but like a mid tier boss. Take his strength and dex off the charts, maybe make him like a wild magic bard but with vampire spells, so he's just going nuts and he's charming and turning invisible and flying around randomly based entirely off instinct since there's no real thought involved.

Wow..... ❤ That was PHENOMENAL! A plus! This should shoot you past your 1k subs so Congrats early! 🎈🥳🎈1 month?!? 😮 I have to admit, I saw a notification of Riches & Liches, vampires and had to quickly get downstairs and watch this. I'll watch it again later with my headphones as your background audio is as good as your artwork. Story was very dark, moody and your voice complimented that. Only thing I can think of I might have added was... What was the vampire before? Warrior? Priest? Mage? Thief? Did that transylvate over and modify their stats? A Paladin vampire might be more powerful than a Death Knight if a dark force (unknown to them?) picked up their template. And an assassin vampire.... I can't even imagine how dangerous that would be in a thieves guild. ("It's like taking candy from a baby.") Great job. 🎈🥳🎈 One request. Please don't slack on the Zombie. It's far less interactive, powerful but it's a worldwide favorite. Rules like outnumbering, holding, pinning seem like they need work on. 5 vs 1, 10 vs 1, and 15 vs 1 should make it hard (exponentially) to avoid getting pinned to the ground. You can't use armor vs a grab. Harder to hit because you can't get a full swing in a horde. Dex would be far less effective when you're surrounded. A horde of zombies in tight quarters should be horrifying. I can't wait to see what you'll do.

@@RichesandLiches - 1.01k today! Excellent! 🎈🥳🎈 And I'm not sure what the 5E version of Zombies is but I'd like to see Homebrew. What makes a zombie tick? Infected by disease? Only created? Spread by bite? Hungry, slow, fresh and fast.... In 30 days of night that guy "survived" a bite (in the chaos) under that house and turned into a somewhat hungry zombie (swing set scene)? Or was that a pre-Vamp? Can Ghouls accidentally make zombies? Keep up the good work. Thanks for giving the foundation 2E credit for the icon they created. That will never get old.

Honestly didn't expect any entomology in a Vampire video, since insects aren't usually their thing. Etymology, however, could be expected due to how old Vampires can be, and how they may use older versions of existing languages. A minor pronunciation mistake has provoked all new roleplaying opportunities!

Here are some of my tips for roleplaying the personalities of a Vampire: A vampire is a being trapped in time. Their body and mind no longer age, and so they often are apathetic or repulsed by things that are considered new. A vampire is a living body that has lost its soul. The shock of losing something so fundamental to the being of most mortals is what drives the vampire's desires. They will do anything to fill that void. No afterlife awaits the vampire, and it knows this on an instinctual level. When it knows that its life is in real danger, any veneer of confidence or sophistication crumbles into primal self-preservation.

My group's Curse of Strahd game had multiple powerful vampires both allies and enemies. Besides, obviously, Count Strahd Von Zarovich, we had Alexander Von Roeyen-Zarovich, Evelyen Sunstar and Anthony Hunt in our party. Being the brother of the Count, Alexander had a similar status and resources as Strahd and while he didn't live in Castle Ravenloft long, he certainly was respected and feared around Barovia. The player who played Alexander explained why he lived in a cave in the mountains by saying that he wanted to hide and wait for his brother. Basically he was smart enough to know that staying in the castle will get him killed or worse. Evelyen and Anthony lived a more modest life in houses, appartments or manners rather than a castle. Since Anthony was a doctor he might have lived above his office or in a small house nearby. Evelyn most likely lived with her father Jander Sunstar whereever he was. In most lore Jander lived in either Castle Ravenloft or a small cave on the outside of any given town as he adventured frequently. During our adventure, I was often the only mortal traveling with the three vampires. I played a half elf cleric princess, heir to Neverwinter, named Zelda Alagondar. Despite her mortal nature, the vampires grew to respect and love Zelda to the point of serving her whatever chance they got. Alexander took a particular interest in Zelda believing her to be a worthy bride if he wished to turn someone for personal gain. He even seduced and courted her, making their relationship feel real and genuine. In fact, the guy who played Alexander didn't even realize how much power he had until it was pointed out to him. By the end of the campaign Alexander had the entire Northern Sword Coast in the palm of his hand if he had just married Zelda and merged the kingdoms of Barovia and Neverwinter. This is even more true when you consider that he was suposed to take over Barovia and killing Strahd would techniaqually make Alexander the heir to the throne. Since Strahd had already conquored the domains of dread Alexander could have claimed all of the domains plus whatever he gained by marrying the heir to Neverwinter.

Vampire: Tsar Nicholas. Ruler of snowy Ostrovad, where the veil between the Material Plane and Shadowfell was thinned long ago by a missing lich warlord. A veil the young princeling disappeared through long ago, having been found again by mage-dictator Razduran and used by him as a puppet Tsar to take the throne with in a civil war. The thing is, Nicolas returned a vampire. He gained legitimacy and thus backing from many of the houses when he attuned to the [Tsar’s Platinum], a relic able to cast Time Stop only usable by those of the old Tsar’s bloodline. Now he is happy in his role as puppet ruler, having his every material desire and vices catered to; believing the role of Tsar to live as the highest example of a nation’s wealth and power, save for appointing the burdens of rulership to trust worthy advisers. He is a hollow, narcissistic parasite obsessed with opulence. Lair: [Heaven’s Door]. A beautifully designed cathedral structure commissioned by the old Tsarinas dedicated to their favoured deity. Nicolas has since defiled it and turned it into his palace of earthly delights, renamed as [Heaven’s Door], each of the seven floors dedicated to a different vice and display of opulence and power. The highest floor, Pride, being his throne. In true Palace of Versailles style, he invites the nobles of the realm to indulge of its grandeur, his plan being to offer them vampiric thraldom or execution. Each floor has its own lair actions, but I haven’t thought of them yet. I’ll definitely be taking inspiration from this vid, but suggestions are always welcome! But some I already have go as follows: -Sloth: Here visitors indulge themselves with intoxicants such as caged faerie dragon breath, captured and imported all the way from the Feywild (a place inaccessible from Ostrovad). Such gas can be bellowed at the party as this floor’s action. -Envy: A floor designed as a show of Nicolas’ wealth and stature. An exhibit of treasures centre-pieced by a statue of himself where an alter once stood. Nobles declare allegiance by spilling some of their blood on this false-shrine. The lair action here is a charming effect from the statue, causing those who fail to fawn over Nic as an action or bonus action (depending on how well they flatter it). Destroying or dispelling it causes this action to cease and a blood-ooze to spawn. -Greed: Here tithings to the Tsar are collected. A room action here is designed to hurt the players in a different way, their wallets. Another charm effect, yet this one compels them to offer their gold and valuables. But if one does so willingly they get a temp HP or advantage buff of some sort. Or perhaps it disables a more deadly room effect for that round. -Gluttony: A massive banquet hall filled with exotic, fantastical gourmet foods and living, intoxicated victims hanging from the ceiling to be tapped like kegs for blood. I seem to like whacky charm effects so maybe an option is to have the players save against being compelled to consume the foods. But if they do they can make a Con save for a positive food effect or a negative one if they fail to handle the Bulette Stake or Shambling Salad. -Pride: I’m not sure about any of the others, but Pride is the floor that the Nicolas fight actually takes place, so these’d be more traditional, less complicated lair actions; seeing as he’ll already be stopping time and drinking special victim’s blood for different buffs.
