    When you say the rogue attacks with advantage the turn after he hid, are you talking about advantage where you roll two dice and take the higher? In addition to enabling the sneak attack damage?

    Yes I am, but that is only for a level 1 Rogue or other classes. A level 2 Rogue with cunning action, could move into heavy cover (or behind total cover) or through it, then use a bonus action to hide, then make an attack in or behind the cover to get advantage on their attack ever round.

    Depending on circumstances, what I usually do is, if the rogue shoots while hidden then they make a stealth check against enemy's pp. If they shoot again while still hidden in same spot then they make another SC but this time I raise the DC and so on and so forth. When they leave the area they are hiding then I usually count it as there not hidden any more unless evety enemy is distracted like for example they all have backs turned etc.

    5:23 I currently have a DM that's ruling you do not get the advantage however. In a podcast about stealh/hiding in combat posted on the official dnd site on 04/27/2017. Jeremy Crawford himself has said a rogue does get the benefit if they pop from behind a corner and make a ranged attack. Unfortunately a melee rogue doesn't get advantage if they have to run up to an enemy. Though as is with everything D&D. Theyre just meant as guidelines an DM has final say. I think the podcast is called "JAMES HAECK ON D&D WRITING" and the part I'm referring to starts around the 36 minute mark.

    I know this is a late comment to an old video, but I just wanted to offer a thought on the "distraction mechanic". First off, I appreciate the the video, as the scenario is very effective for contextualizing multiple mechanics and conditions surrounding hiding and the Hide action. So, as you're well aware, DnD5e doesn't thoroughly discuss how distraction works in relation to Perception, so many people (including me) infer how it works using the mechanics of Sneak Attack. Hiding and cover aside, a character is allowed to target an enemy it can see with an attack, even when another enemy is 5 feet away from the attacking character (Sneak Attack's condition for being distracted). The attacking character normally would make this attack without getting disadvantage from the Unseen Target mechanics, so being distracted clearly doesn't affect a character's line of sight as if the enemy were heavily obscured. It requires interpretation, but I think distraction affects a character's line of sight of the enemy as if were lightly obscured. There is no penalty for attacking a lightly obscured character, and a lightly obscured character cannot take the Hide action if it is in line of sight of the enemy (unless a trait or feat says otherwise, like Mask of the Wild, Skulker, etc.), but if a hidden character is lightly obscured, line of sight does not automatically cause them to be discovered. I think this neatly fits in with the mentions of distraction as it pertains to hiding, so I would say distracted characters always make Perception checks against hidden characters that are in line of sight. I think it's reasonable to give those Perception checks disadvantage (in line with being lightly obscured), if you want to be nice to your players.

    Thanks. I've been watching several videos on this topic from 'big' channels, but yours is the one that really explains the mechanics without ambiguity 👍 & backs it up with official rulings. Excellent! I am wondering if there is a way for a rogue to use sneak attack in melee situations somehow? Jumping down from a rooftop, darting out from behind some barrels, etc is it just for the DM to adjudicate this situation favourably if its well planned & described & to disallow it to be overused. Or is there some reliable stealth mechanism for a melee rogue to get the sneak attack? (of course if another ally is in 5', I know but just wondering specifically about stealth + melee)

    Playing Solasta Crown of the Magister taught me about stealth in combat, so I'm watching this video to see if it works the way I understand it from playing that game...you have to be out of line of sight to hide in combat (or under full cover/obscured) then after the regular perception/stealth contested check, if you succeed you get advantage on your attack roll, then after you attack if you hit they get another perception check, with advantage, and you make a stealth check with disadvantage to see if they spot you....this is where the cloak of elvenkind comes in (a magic item I have in the game), which gives you advantage on stealth checks and your opponent disadvantage on perception checks to find you, meaning my rogue (that uses hide as a bonus action) is quite stealthy and more often than not rolling attacks with advantage and getting sneak attacks

  • @russb5234
    @russb52346 жыл бұрын

    Late to the game, but, don't forget "Mask of the Wild" racial for Wood Elves. This allows the hide action to be attempted when lightly obscured by "natural phenomena", such as snow, rain, mist. The text doesn't include shadows as "natural phenomena," but I think a reasonable GM would/should allow it. Also, Lightfoot Halflings have the "Naturally Stealthy" racial allowing them to hide when they are obscured by a medium sized creature. Meaning they can Hide behind their own party members in combat.

    Edit: I was mistaken, here is the correct version: Player Hand Book page 195 you can attack using your bonus action when you are wielding two light weapon but you don't add your modifier to the dmg on the bonus attack. Fighter can pick up Two-Weapon fighting allowing you to add the modifier bonus to the bonus attack. Dual Wielder feat allows you to use other weapon than just lights, allows you to draw two weapons on single turn and gives you +1AC

    @@MannonMartin Ah, yes, I was wrong. I fixed the comment, thanks. But I know what I was thinking but just failed with the rules, again. You do understand why you want Dual Wielder as Rogue? If not here are my reasoning: 1) Double the chance of Sneak Attack. 1d20 becomes 2d20 and with advantage whopping 4d40 to land a hit? Rogues Main dmg almost trough the game is from Sneak attack. You gain more value from this higher level you are. 2) +1AC never hurts just in case, that is 5% 3) Able to draw two weapons at the start of the fight and gain the +1AC on turn 1. 4) While fighting you can throw two daggers and still have two weapons at hand for that +1AC... 5) MinMax early game dmg with two rapiers 2d8 dmg if you land both over 1d4. 6) Assasin having poisoned daggers under his cloak able to throw them at any point of combat. 500gold for paralysing chance with sneak attack dmg? if you get a lot of money you can prep yourself like that. 7) You lose 3 to 5 dmg from the second swing but that is extra 1d4 dmg at lowest with added bonus if you happen to use poisons as any rogue ;) Is this enough reason to pick Dual Wielder feat as Rogue? I have not gotten chance to use this yet as I'm DM for ever :( and no one of my players wants to be rogue :^) There are rare cases why you would use Dual Wielding feat and the answer is Rogue. Fighter gets more out when they take Half-Orc with Great Weapon Master - any crit allows you to attack with bonus attack. action surge and that is 2 extra attacks from crit ... and crits are with one extra dice so 3d12 great axe... I just like Dual Wielder feat in theory but only usable use I have for it is Rogue. I do know Fighter can use two weapons for great success as one of my friends plays that, there is nothing wrong if you want to do that. The rules just are annoying ... like when you attack can you always choose which weapon is which attack and do you have to say it before hand? I hate rules with Dyslexia. The Rules: PHB page 195: "you don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative." Fighter: "Two-Weapon Fighting. When you engage in two-weapon fighting, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the second attack." Feat: "Dual Wielder You master fighting with two weapons, gaining the following benefits: • You gain a +1 bonus to AC while you are wielding a separate melee weapon in each hand. • You can use two-weapon fighting even when the one-handed melee weapons you are wielding aren’t light. • You can draw or stow two one-handed weapons when you would normally b e able to draw or stow only one." TL;DR: Rogue sneak attack is so important that I mean Dual Wielder feat indeed but for the wrong reason :D

  • @MannonMartin

    @MannonMartin

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@xezzee Two-Weapon fighting is pretty strong for a rogue. It's a second shot at getting your sneak attack when your attack action misses. Having said that, you can gain the primary benefit of it without using a feat. Yes it limits you to light weapons, but short swords are only on average 1 point less damage than rapiers. The extra AC is handy, but not life changing. And being able to draw two weapons instead of just one is rather situational and dependent on how strict your DM even is about object interactions. Dual Wielder is definitely nice, but even if you're using two-weapon fighting there are a lot of really strong feats to consider that I think would actually be a bit more useful if you're talking strictly about optimizing. Heck even using a feat to get two weapon fighting style would actually add more damage than dual wielder would. Not saying you shouldn't take it. I think it's a good feat, but it's almost more a style choice than a true optimizer. Honestly dual wielder would better suit a Str based martial class, which is a shame. To my mind rogues have always been a natural fit for dual wielding and yet they don't get that or any fighting styles. Honestly if you're not a swashbuckler a better feat to take might be Mobile, because two weapon fighting uses your bonus action and that prevents you from being able to use both attacks and still dash or disengage. If you have Mobile you already move faster and you get disengage for free against any enemy you make a melee attack against. You become a hit and run master. Even against two opponents you could charge in attack one, use bonus action to attack the other, then still back away. Even if you miss they don't get opportunity attacks against you. There's also great ranged options in Crossbow Expert and Sharpshooter. If you don't have magic there are feats that can get you some which are pretty great. Heck they are arguably even better if you do have magic, as it can significantly expand your capabilities and still synergize with your other magic. I definitely understand the allure of Dual Wielder, though. And I'm by no means discouraging you from taking it. Just keep in mind that it's not the feat that gives you two weapon fighting. You already have that ability without the feat. It's more like it just softens some of the downsides of using it without actually powering it up very much.

    How to D&D thank you very much for taking the time for that clarification. I'm very new to the game so I wasn't sure of any significant difference in when the roll is taking place. And from my understanding, a sneak attack with advantage is always preferable as it allows you an extra chance to crit, is that right? And if a crit does occur (with our without advantage) you then roll your sneak attack AND your weapon damage twice and add the total (and any modifiers on your weapon, such as a Dex modifier for ranged/finesse weapons)

    Clear and concise explanation, I have a rogue that just hit lvl 2, how would you advise this ability to be teamed up with Fog cloud (as far as rulings go). As of right now I have every creature in the fog cloud as Blinded which frustrates my rogue a bit since she can't use her sneak attack (disadvantage) but received advantage from being able to hide (heavily obscured)? I ruled it that she can attack as normal but no sneak attack. I'm curious your thoughts! Edit: The rogue in my groups party is a wooddelf with "Mask of the Wild".

  • @MannonMartin

    @MannonMartin

    2 жыл бұрын

    Technically this shouldn't be a total shutdown. Yes if you cannot see what you are attacking you get disadvantage. However if your target cannot see you then you gain advantage. These cancel out. It does make it impossible for the rogue to gain sneak attack via getting advantage. However they can still gain sneak attack if an ally is adjacent to their target. They should be able to move about freely in the fog since enemies can't make opportunity attacks against creatures they can't see. Although it might be difficult to coordinate with the party, it does offer a means of gaining sneak attack. (Note: Swashbuckler rogues at level 3 gain another means of getting sneak attack if they are within 5 ft of their target and no other creatures are within 5 ft of themselves.)

Hiding while in melee range is not something I would normally allow if I was DMing, although maybe the first attack that is made would be fine. If your rogue has 30ft speed and, like you said, move 25ft and attack an opponent, (you still have 5ft movement left, but you already used your action) you can still use a Bonus Action to use Disengage or Dash to get away. What's the difference you say: letme explain: 1.- Move 25ft - Attack - Disengage 5ft: You only have 5 ft left to move after the attack, but if the enemy is not unconsious you don't provoke an opportunity attack. This combo is usefull when you want to get close attack and get away in close skirmishes when your enemy is still alive. 2.- Move 25ft - Attack - Dash: You got 35 movement left because Dash grants you extra movement for the current turn (+30), the downside is that your movement will provoke opportunity attacks if there's still a contious enemy. It is best used when you get close, attack and finish your enemy to move to another target. All of this of course if you have the cunning action as a lvl 2 Rogue. Hope it helps!!!

    Keep in mind you can only use one bonus action on your turn. So you can hide or disengage or dash, but not all three. If you're rogue is a swashbuckler or has the mobile feat they won't need to disengage from an enemy they have made a melee attack against, leaving them free to dash away scott free for good old hit and run tactics. Another question Wood Elf using Mask of the Wild in the woods- They can take a hide action when lightly obscured by natural phenomena (does a FOG CLOUD SPELL count as natural?)- but not as a bonus action, right? It has to be their action for the turn (even if they are a second-level rogue)? Is there a special bonus a 2nd Level Wood Elf Rogue would get if they are fighting in the woods? Or is this double-dipping?

The player then uses the cunning action to hide. I looked confused as to why as why not disengage instead but i try not to meta game my players so i had them roll at disadvantage as the GS was there and right on them. Im sure if i did this right as i didn't want to stop the game and check all the pages as how this would run. Can i get your thoughts on this.

Once I found out how sneak attack worked, I would look for any possible way to get advantage on a roll. Usually, I would just try to find a higher elevation, but after found out hiding could give me an advantage, this just makes me even more powerful on level ground as well. I'm sure my DM is super annoyed at my constant asking of "I have advantage, right?" but if it's more damage, I'll take anything I can XD

    This is literally how rogues are meant to fight. You don't get extra attacks. Sneak attack is an essential core skill to the rogue. Without it you're just a character using weaker weapons for no reason and only getting one attack. Honestly the DM should probably just anticipate and let you know in advance. Keep in mind if you have an ally next to an enemy you get sneak attack even without advantage. (Or rather if there is an enemy of your target within 5ft of it, they don't have to be your ally.) This is handy when it's difficult to get advantage and means if your party is fighting an enemy it's generally not worth wasting an attack to setup an attack with advantage if you can just attack on both turns. (Although advantage is nice if you can get it.)

    I have a question still. Say there’s a big rock that the rogue successfully hides behind (stealth check beats the goblin’s passive perception) The goblins may know the rogue is there just can’t see to target the rogue. Now what happens if the goblins move to a space on the same side of the rock as the rogue? The rules state you cannot hide from a creature that can see you clearly so I’d say the hiding and any benefit the rogue gets ends, but are the goblins “allowed” to move around to look for the rogue because that’s what the search action is for to make a perception check. I know this is 7 years old but I hope someone else confused in the comments might help me out if not the creator lol.

    The age of my videos is not important, I still answer questions. Unfortunately hiding in combat is often not useful, practical or very clear in the rules for a design reason, for the very situation you have presented. The Goblin doesn't have to use a search action in combat if it walks around the big rock, because it will be obvious that the Rogue went behind it. This is still dependent on the Dungeon Masters ruling at your table, rather than my assessment. All the best :)

    If an enemy your monster can see moves out of it's reach it can make an opportunity attack as a reaction. Or if the trigger for a readied action occurs and is perceived by the monster they can then take that readied action. There are no other general uses for your reaction so any other ways to use it's reaction will have to come from it's stat block. Generally I don't think you should work too hard to shut down your players anyway. Let them do the cool stuff and have fun most of the time, then surprise and challenge them so they have to learn new skills and tactics later.

    It seems that the rules for hiding still allow for the enemy to *know where the hidden person is.* That's pretty counterintuitive for an action called "hide"! Such quibbles aside, it seems like hiding is a very situational choice for any character that doesn't have a special ability to make hiding in combat more effective (e.g. rogues, goblins, etc.) Giving up an action for the mere *possibility* of getting advantage next turn is, in general, not a good bet.

    It's hard to do a video on the Hide Action in Combat without touching on Stealth, Perception, and Perception checks and such as in order to be successful at Hiding you have to make a Stealth check which the success of depends on a contested Perception check. My issue is that when you first make the Stealth check it is your turn and under the sidebar rules, specifically under the Passive Perception section, the first three words say "When you hide," this to me is different than 'when you attempt to hide' and suggests you have already successfully hid and the passive perception check is to see if the enemy can discern where you have hidden. It is a contested passive perception check which means they have to beat your stealth roll not tie it (as per the contest rule - situation remains the same in the event of a tie) and they suffer a -5 to their passive if in dim light or some other lightly obscured area. Plus, I'll give you credit for mentioning active perception checks but remember in order to make an active perception check you have to take the Search action. This action can only be taken on their turn and uses up their action, which means they cannot attack or do anything else with their action. They don't have to search for the hidden creature (Rogue in this example) but until he reveals himself they get no further passive perception checks to know where he is hidden. Attacking reveals his location, as does a successful passive or active check (again, active using up their action), or if he reveals himself willingly. This explanation was not meant as a knock against your video, I enjoyed it immensely and got me to familiarize myself more with the rules surrounding Stealth. I just wanted to point out that the active perception check does cost their action on their turn and should not be awarded freely, as some DMs might forget and allow the check along with an attack. It should be an either/or scenario according to the rules, meaning they either use the Search action (so they might find you but can't attack) or they use the Attack action (since they don't know where you're hidden they would have to attack someone else or make their best guess as to where you are, and if they select the wrong place (square on a grid map) then they auto miss even if they roll a crit (natural 20))

    That's definitely very DM dependent. I don't think there are any rules stating this. In fact the rules describe creatures in combat as being very aware of possible threats and constantly looking for danger. Granted if they are being attacked that is very distracting, hence the flanking variant rule. Perhaps a version of flanking could be applied to stealth checks, granting advantage to a rogue sneaking up on an enemy from the opposite side if an ally is next to them. But that could be a slippery slope. If it works for stealth at range why not ranged attacks for instance?

    You don't need to hide every round. Elevation also grants advantage aka sneak attack, ally withing 5 feet also gives you sneak att. The reason why hide every round is OP is because not only a rogue has sneak attack, he cannot be targeted by spells. Which renders a magic user useless against a bunch of lvl 2 rogues. In most cases, 5 x lvl2 rogues will completely destroy a lvl10 wizard in about 2-3 rounds.

  • @HowtoRPG

    Honhoa Ong The reason to hide every round is not just to get sneak attack, but advantage on the attack roll. Hiding every round makes you more difficult to target as you are unseen, but that will not stop a Wizard casting greater invisibility or invisibility. A Wizard might not be able to see a Rogue but can cast area affect spells at the cover the Rogue is using to hide in (fireball). It also does not stop a monster or wizard moving into the cover the Rogue is using to hide after the first round and finding them. Hiding after the first round does not mean the wizard or monster is not aware the Rogue is around or hiding in cover. I get your point that they are harder to target, which is true.

    Page 177 of the Player's Handbook "You can't hide from a creature that can see you clearly", so I agree that so long as you go find some form of cover, be it physical or going into the shadows, AND the enemy is distracted and/or is not alerted to your presence, then stealth should be possible. However upon coming back into line of sight, I would expect at least a passive perception check to ensure that you were not spotted. If however the enemy KNOWS that you went behind cover, and knows that you would come back from there, they will be looking out for you, and so unless you have some other means of covering yourself, magical etc, stealth should not be possible.

    I completely agree, I wasn't saying anything to the contrary, I simply wanted to quote directly from the Handbook that if you can be seen, then you can't hide, there seems to be a lot of confusion on this. Of course the DM always rules in every situation, if they wanted they could totally ignore the rules and play Bloodbowl mid game (not a bad little mini quest to be fair). However if the DM steers away from this too much, they risk unbalancing the game, for example the Wood Elf has a specific feature that they can Hide in partial cover, so if we let everyone do that, not much point having that bonus as a Wood Elf. Just food for thought.

    No, the Goblins and the Dungeon Master can do something about it. The Goblins can use an action to make an active perception check to detect the Rogue and possibly spot the Rogue. The Goblins can do the same sort of thing to the party with Nimble escape (Hide or disengage as a bonus action). The Goblins can disengage as a bonus action and move into cover, behind it cover or to the Rogues last known location. The DM could allow the passive perception of the Goblins to contest Rogues Stealth check. The DM could also apply disadvantage to the Rogues hide action if they use the same cover or repeatedly hide during combat (not stated as a rule in the PHB, but DM's can make rulings).

    I understand what you're saying here, but I cant agree with everything. If you land or miss a ranged attack from stealth, the enemy will know your position (the proof is that there is a feat to avoid you to be found if you miss). So, if the goblin knows exactly where you are, you OBVIOUSLY can't hide in the same place. So, you at the very least needs to run to another hidden place and not be seen. Balancing is great and all, but you can't simply do something that is absurd so the character gets balanced. It break the immersion, and that's what really matters !

    depends, what if the goblin is actively fighting in melee? he can't keep track of where the rogue is hiding, that would require his combat round to be used for actively seeking or looking around.

    This is totally innacurate. byt he rules you need to do a stealth check EVERY ROUND in order to stay undetected, else this is considered as you effectively STOP HIDING (PHB174). in order to be able to have advantage on an attack while hiding you need to be able to hide as a bonus action, else you spend your action staying hidden every turn and therefore cannot attack.

    That is not accurate. See pages 177, 178, 182, 183, 192, 193 and 194 of the PHB.

    But here's the problem- As the rogue gets better at hiding, in addition to sneak attack damage every round they are almost always unseen, which makes them virtually impossible to hit. Clearly, this is imbalanced. Therefore, the DM must adjudicate in such a way whereby the Rogue is seen once having attacked from a hiding position. That means an enemy, who has spotted the rogue firing, can (if they wish) advance upon the Rogue's position to engage in melee. This keeps things fair and balanced. If you keep the monsters continuously passive and stationary, the rogue will never take damage. (Again: imbalancing). Thus, dynamic combat should emphasise the possibility that no PC is safe. This keeps the outcome of combat from always being a foregone conclusion, especially in so far as the rogue is concerned. The game designers have obviously relied too heavily on the rogue's hiding and sneak attack for its "strength" -- and it shows, to the extent that what is supposed to be a unique sneak attack actually becomes ordinary, coz the rogue does it every round, and reduces and measures each class largely in terms of its "damage output", aside from other class attributes that otherwise would have made the class more well-rounded.

    What about a wizard who cast a magic missile every round, he doesn't even need to roll for hit, automatically deals a lot of damage, you think that's fair? an enemy wizard could use his reaction to cast a spell at a rogue doing his sneak attack, monsters and enemy npcs can get creative too.
