Hi father & son. I just wanted to say that I found this page 4 hours ago. I'm still watching 😍 I'm so moved by your loving dynamic, music interpretation, and general love and respect for music. To Dad: I cry, when you cry❤ I love that you feel the music so hard(makes me feel more normal) I wish that me and my son will vibe like you this to the music he shows me❤ Thank you for doing this, keep the love of music going🫱🏻‍🫲🏿 Love from Norway😊

[NOTE: I’m a Gen Z white kid so I don’t know shit, but here’s my view: ] It seemed like we reached a point where music was in the past, present, and future, all in one. The deep grooves and soulful voices, reminiscent of the rich soul cuts from the past, accompanied by infectious confidence of the new rap scene of the present - were blended together to form a future of sounds. Sounds that people of all differences; whether it be age, race, sexuality, gender, or occupation, can feel and truly appreciate in their own ways. When Neo-Soul emerged amidst all the chaos, it was like a little reminder: that underneath all the stupid bickering on the streets, the relentless warfare between prissy world leaders, and everyone’s inner hatred for the way our world is - love is within. And that’s what Neo-Soul was at its best: a love note to all, but most importantly you, and speaking to you in a language only the listener can understand.

a bit of context on his 14 year absence. after the success of Voodoo, he had started to become something of a sex symbol, which he hated. being sexualised so severely, to the point where his concerts were treated like strip shows, really affected his self-esteem and he became reclusive for a while

D’Angelo is the King of Neo Soul! He’s my favorite artist of all time! He was definitely raised in the church. His grandfather and father were preachers. It’s amazing to know that he wrote and recorded most of this album in his bedroom. He set the bar for Neo Soul in the mid to late 90’s early 2000’s. His Untitled music video took a toll on him. He always said he wanted to be known for his music and not be a sex symbol. Shoutout to Raphael Saddiq playing bass on his song Lady. Much love D’Angelo and we’re waiting on that 4th album!

DJ Premiere from Gangstarr (production) was a huge influence on D'Angelo, especially Step In the Arena. Preemo would later produce "Devil's Pie" on D'Angelo's second album. Oh and Erykah Badu and D'Angelo did a song together titled "Your Precious Love." Both had the same manager Kedar Massenburg in the early days. Also, maybe not on this album but on the second one (Voodoo) D'Angelo used Stevie Wonder's Rhodes that happened to be sitting in the Electric Ladyland studio when they went there to record. Oh and Smokey Robinson recently said in an interview that he loved D'Angelo's cover of "Crusin'" and joined him on stage to sing it once.

Thank you for doing this reaction. When there are talented artists like D'Angelo who produce, play instruments, and have vocal skills it's great to see them get the props! Great job!

Classic album. If you ever listen to anything D’Angelo make sure to have lyrics in from of you. The album Black Messiah is so intense and robust when you can understand what he’s say. Which funny enough, not being able to understand the sheer brilliance of the lyrics because of his singing style was his baby mama Angie Stones only critique of the album. She’s a great R & B artist in her own right.

Thank you for your reaction! I love this album - I walked down the aisle to "Higher" when I got married! I noticed your Parliament album on the shelf. "When we get by," samples the melody for Funkadelic "One Nation Under a Groove" behind the chorus and during the intro! :D
