Jesse Johnson was on Prince's band; Pino Palladino played with The Who; Questlove is a founding member of The Roots; Chris Dave is one of the best modern drummers; This is basically an All-Star lineup.

Welcome to the enigmatic musical genius that is D’Angelo (Dee-Angelo) this album came out in 2014/15’ I was in college and had NO IDEA this was dropping. This brother is one of my favorites. Brown Sugar is great, Voodoo is Magnum Opus, Black Messiah is a return to form after years of exile and struggle with fame and the monster that is the music industry.

This album is absolutely a "grower not a shower" lol. I am a diehard Beatles & Stevie Wonder fan (among other greats), and i've listened to this "Black Messiah" album more times than any other album in my life. It truly is a musical masterclass. I thoroughly enjoyed your authentic reaction to it 🙌🏽😊

This Is a 10/10! Let me explain: you had to listen to the album to understand it so the digital version sounds nothing like the CD or vinyl and that’s a gem within itself. The lyrics were damn good without sounding preachy.those songs were done before the BLM movement. It’s a fine wine that ages gracefully for fans. Honorable mention: Jimmy Lee-Raphael Saadiq. Cinnamon soul✊🏾

Regarding your closing statement, I get why people are quick to judge others for listening to certain music as an "outsider." They're mostly talking about people who consume art made by marginalized groups who then (mostly figuratively but often literally) wear their culture like a costume. But for someone to flat-out say that YOU shouldn't experience black music AT ALL is both wrong and misguided. Music IS the universal language. Case in point, you might not have ever learned who Fred Hampton was if the music didn't spark your curiosity. Isn't that what we want for the world? To get other people to see our perspective from a way that cuts through all the bullshit discourse and goes straight to the heart? You're a good one M6, I'd hate for you to miss out on some real thought-provoking art.

I like how D'Angelo really takes his times to polish his albums to perfection. I heard a funny concept the other day that "efficiency is disgusting." It's better to take your time and produce a few things that are wonderful than to mass produce a bunch of bullshit.
