D'ADDARIO VENN REED - A SYNTHETIC REED THAT WORKS?

My review of the D'Addario Venn Reed, launched in the UK on 4th April 2022. Is this a synthetic reed that I will actually get along with, given my distaste for the others?

Dan Forshaw is one of the most charismatic musicians on the British Jazz scene. A superb communicator with an infectious passion for music, Dan’s ability to captivate audiences with his performances have led him to perform all over the world with ensembles ranging from jazz quartets to classical cathedral choirs. Forshaw is one of the UK’s leading experts on the legendary saxophonist, John Coltrane, and has had a number of articles published on John Coltrane’s music & theology. Tim Price, Professor of saxophone in New York and a former teacher of Dan said, ‘Dan has reached a strong level of musicality, depth and technique that very few players have….he is a breath of fresh air, ‘hear him!’
Dan was taught by Ray Wilkes, a legend on the Northern Jazz scene and a former member of Cedar Walton’s band in New York. Dan started picking up gigs aged 14 and by 16 Dan was on the road with the ‘Amazing Blues Brothers Soul Revue Tour.’
After meeting Branford Marsalis at the RNCM in April 2003, Branford invited Dan to study with him in the USA, which Dan did in March / April 2005. Whilst in New York, Dan was inspired by the many amazing musicians he heard & upon returning to England, he moved to London in the summer of 2005. Dan’s target was to return to New York, but life led him to Ireland where he was an active player on the small but lively Irish Jazz Scene.
Dan is now based in Cambridge, England where he teaches saxophone for Cambridge University and through his award-winning website, Cambridge Saxophone.com. One of life’s natural teachers, Dan has students from all seven continents, (including Antarctica!) and enjoys nothing more than engaging students from all ages with his passion for jazz improvisation. Dan still maintains an active performance schedule with his band performing on the London Jazz Scene (like at Pizza Express Soho), regular tours, and his ‘Jazz Vespers‘ project, which has seen Dan on Prime Time National TV, (BBC One,) leading jazz events at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the at the new home for Jazz Vespers in London, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
Dan is an active ‘Vlogger’, with thousands of viewers watching his videos every week. Outside of music Dan enjoys photography, sport, and most of all spending time with his children Aimée and Charlie.

I just ordered one. I am currently playing on a Legere American cut and sounds amazing but I wanted to give this one a try 'cause everyone is speaking wonders... I guess I have tried most of the synthetic reed brands on the market after many years of sanding and fighting with cane reeds. IMO it takes a bit to adjust but I have no doubt that you can have a great sound on one of these without the cons of a cane reed. Dan sounds great on alto but not as comfy on tenor, I would love to hear you back in a couple of weeks if you practice on it, the change on sound should be interesting to hear...

Been playing the légère American cut for two years!......problem is, they crack within a few days and are dead within 6 weeks of hard playing !!! Can someone tell me which is best to try first out of the ambipoly Silverstein or the vent reeds?

I got one of these for tenor and clarinet, when they launched in the US. Both felt very dead and were shedding hairs/fibers out the sides. Maybe I should give them another try.

Hey Jacob - Kristen from D'Addario Woodwinds here. Thanks for checking out VENN when they initially came out! We made some improvements based on early VENN feedback in 2021 and recently resumed shipping. We definitely recommend giving them another try as we've improved the reed's response and eliminated the fraying issue.

@@johnfilardi Quick note that with the Generation 2 version of VENN, they can be sanded and modified if desired. The actual dimensions of VENN's vamps (each strength is a little different) are quite different than cane reed dimensions however, so just know that if one does modify, what typically works well for cane reed modifications might lead to a very different result with VENN.

How long do they last? When I tried Legere they kind of worked, but it wore out faster than my cane. Not a real savings.

Our testers indicated that VENN does not break down from normal use over time. It is more likely that the tip will become damaged from accidental mishandling than from actual play. In the unlikely instance it does seem to change after a few months of normal use, we would absolutely provide replacements.

I'm a relative beginner, used to Boston Shop 2.0 and Legere American Cut 1.75 reeds. I find the Venn horribly stiff and hard, much stiffer than its nominal 2.0 rating. It's nastily slippery in the mouth and although I can find tone I like in the Venn, it's very hard work and no fun at all. I will keep at it though.

  • @DolphScreamingSax

Looks like there is some competition for the trusted Legere reeds. However, I did not see a reed strength comparison chart, nor a free exchange policy if the reed strength is not to your liking, like with Legere. I was hoping for a more economic alternative to the Legere reeds, but I was disappointed. It does explain the fancy packaging though. Looking forward to your follow-up vlog.

You can find reed strength charts online for these reeds. They’re slightly more resistant so a normal 3.5 would be more like a size 3 with these new reeds.

Dan? Update? At least drop a quick message? Inquiring minds want to know!! I have been using a Tenor 3 Rico Orange Box (ones that play easy- lots of dogs In a box), I came from a 5 Fibracell and after 10+ years I got very tired of the consistency. Rico's...wow love one when I find a good one!! Do you recommend a 2 or a 3 Venn?

Ok so I played it......the claim is that the 2 plays like a 3 Rico (Doesn't specify Rico Orange or Royal)...I have determined that to be FALSE. It plays MUCH softer. Plays way softer than a Rico Orange Box and way way softer than a Rico Royal. I followed the chart....so Don't follow the chart...lol. I am going to try to send it back for a 2.5 or 3. However....the response was very even.....super loud....bright, but full. It's enough to keep me intrigued. Does feel plasticy, and seems buzzy, maybe because it's too soft for me. DOES NOT feel like a Fibracell....or Harry Hartman Fibrereed. But if I had to compare it it would be like a one of the HH Carbon Fibereeds....but the tip is much more comfortable and does not stab your tongue. Anyway that's it till I get the next one! I hope 321 Music will exchange it for me. Or I'm out $30....expensive trial seems like coming up..booooo.
