Czech Gymnastics Icon Věra Čáslavská - A National Hero | Mexico 1968 Olympics

With the added political pressure surrounding her participation in the Games, Czech gymnast Vera Caslavska puts on an incredible performance at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games.
After winning three gold medals at the 1964 Tokyo Games, Vera Caslavska was the favourite to repeat her success in 1968. In April she had signed the "Manifesto of 2000 Words", which rejected Soviet involvement in Czechoslovakia. Two months before the Olympic Games began, Soviet tanks rolled into Prague.
Warned that she was in danger of being arrested, Caslavska fled to the mountains. In hiding, she kept in shape by swinging from trees and practising her floor exercises in a meadow. After three weeks, the government allowed her to join the rest of the Czech team in Mexico City.
Caslavska competed under enormous pressure against Soviet athletes. Despite the rudimentary preparation, she successfully defended her all-around and vault titles, adding two more golds and two silvers. The Mexican people identified with her stand against oppression, and she became the star of the Games.
Upon her return, she was not allowed to take employment by the Soviet government unless she stated she had not signed the manifesto. She refused. In 1989, after the fall of Communism, she was reinstated as a public figure and became an adviser to President Vaclev Havel.

Vera Caslavska was not only a champion, she was a HERO . I was only elementary school age during these Olympics and it took my some years to understand the implications of her protest. It is possible to make your voice heard without violence or verbal offense. Vera Caslavska protested with dignity and class. She has always been one of my idols.

Stumbled on this by accident. This is an amazing feat not because of her athletic ability but because of the pressures on top of training in her personal life. To not have personal freedom and still survive..is A true test of will. The other part of her story had to be an immense struggle.

Most of gymnast then enjoyed what they were doing... now they are abused phisically, mentally and with a lot of pressure Just look at the chineses when they won/win, but unlike in the USA, they can't speak The only actual person in those censure-countries who enjoys what she does is Aliya Mustafina, 24 year, mom last year and still competes in elite (I love her!)

Jane Aston you are right, her moves were very refined, clean and graceful. The way she had of landing in a split from a tumbling run was absolutely divine. I doubt many girls today could carry that off the way she did (today's power flips lead to sloppy landings). She advanced the sport of gymnastics a great deal, also. Her power and level of difficulty were very advanced for her time, which raised the bar for those who followed. Almost as important was the attention and popularity she brought to the sport at a time when women weren't supposed to be athletic. Truly the mother of the "modern" gymnast.

She was absolutely amazing, and even by today's lofty standards it's a pleasure to watch her! There is her absolute precision coupled with huge amounts of pure and mature grace. Unfortunately women's gymnastics took a wrong turn many decades ago! Someone with Caslavska's completely appropriate body of a young and healthy woman could not compete with today's dwarfs.

Věra Čáslavská a remarkable gymnast, one of the greatest, competed in three Olympics: Roma 60, Tokyo 64 and Mexico 68 she was winning lots of medals; she was the precursor to give more breadth to the routines in uneven bars and floor, great vaulter; Their contributions Issue foreshadowed the golden age of gymnastics in the seventies When This discipline Reached the Top With Tourischeva, Korbut and Comaneci. Čáslavská was also a remarkable political activist against the dictatorship of the Soviet Union and in their own country Czechoslovakia. May she rest in peace

Maybe, but look well at her routine. The bars are right next to each other requiring little inertia or speed flinging full body weight to get from one to the other. She can just reach over to grab it. She does only two small "turns" around the bar, not multiple turns from extended handstand positions as required today. She is not trying to catch her body weight falling, almost doubled by gravity, from 3 or 4 feet above the top bar, with her wrists and 8 weight-bearing fingers in something like a Tkachev, even though the Tkachev didn't exist then. A good coating of chalk for her kind of routine to keep her hands dry would be enough to prevent any tearing.

lucy ... You can thank the technical committees (I think) for continually raising the difficulty factors for competition. You MUST have muscle mass to protect your bones from breaking or even shattering when you have to keep pounding your body weight at 1 1/2x or 2x gravity when landing from insane heights. What cannot sustain that kind of stress adequately are ligaments, spines, knees and ankles, and you see evidence of that all the time with countless injuries to them. Wispy little "ballerina style" twiglets who are 4 1/2' tall and weigh 80 lbs with fragile, diminutive bones and little muscle mass, simply cannot maintain that kind of stamina for very long under current difficulty levels.

Minami Suzuki Minami ... Forty years ago, most of the routines did not have the difficulty factors that gymnasts have to perform today. When Nadia was interviewed about the type of performances that are required to compete today, she said she did not think she could have done them. Fourteen year old girls forty years ago seldom had injuries from very risky routines, so no one would complain about their being too young.

I had never heard of her before today. Now I have a new heroine. Her's is better than Olga Korbut's floor routine 4 years later.
