CZ P01 vs 75 D Compact (PCR) - some Czech alternatives to the Glock 19.

These are two older compact 9mm pistols in my collection. The CZ 75 P-01 and CZ 75 D Compact (a.k.a. PCR) are two aluminum frame DA/SA 9mm pistols, that are usually overlooked when people are selecting carry pistols.
There are a few notable differences beyond the obvious rail on the P-01 and the shorter non-railed dust-cover on the PCR. The P-01 seems geared more toward duty use, while the PCR is clearly aimed at the concealed carry market.
The mid-sized pistol market is flooded with great options beyond these two pistols, even a number of other options from CZ. But if you're looking for a good alloy-framed DA/SA pistol to carry, you should definitely consider these two.
I haven't included any shooting footage with these pistols. I have some other footage of me shooting the P-01 on my channel in various videos, but no footage yet of the PCR. Just lots of dry-fire these past months.
If you're considering buying the PCR (75 D Compact), definitely watch until 20:52 to see what happens when you try to load from the breach, as opposed to loading from the magazine. Most semi-automatic pistols (excluding the 1911) can be loaded from the breach without issue, but this specific iteration of the CZ 75 cannot. Might be a deal breaker for some.

    Some say the split pin that stops the firing pin is a split pin for a reason. Split pin does slowly collapse and eventually break if one dry fires a lot. Split pin is effectively acting as an impact surface and the pin's slow collapse is reducing the firing pin's likelihood of work hardening and eventually breaking. Replacing the split pin with a solid pin puts more stress on the firing pin and thereby increases the likelihood of firing pin breakage.

I will say that the narrower muzzle end of the PCR carries nicer if you're using a leather or hybrid holster. There isn't much difference shooting, but I'd give the advantage slightly to the P01. Both are pretty light recoiling, but if you hang a light on the P01 it recoils ridiculously flat.

Not easy like swapping parts in a Glock, but no hand fitting required, so much easier than something like a 1911. My PCR has the fewest upgrades, and the P-01 has a pretty extensive list. If you're going to carry, I'd focus on keeping reliability high and not changing anything that changes too much of how hard or fast the firing pin hits the primer. It's a perfect hold with the stock rear sight (bullet impact at the top edge of the front sight at 15 yards) with my target ammo. The PCR has a taller FS, I believe 6.5mm, and that impacts 1.5 inches low at 15yrds, which is about covering your intended target with the dot.

The heavier spring I mentioned was in response to this issue (I only put it in when I know I'm going to shoot hotter ammo), and you can put a recoil buffer in there as well. Lighter and more-worn recoil springs will lead to more impact to the frame over time. That said, I have about 1500 rounds through the p-01 (bought new) and 700 that I've put through the PCR (bought used) and have not noticed any of this deformation first hand in either gun.

Both my 75D and P01 have firing pin blocks that prevent it from hitting the primer. I consider both drop-safe with a loaded chamber. I would not manually lower the hammer to the fully-forward position with a round in the chamber. If you use the decocking lever, you'll never put the hammer there without pulling the trigger. If I use a snap cap while dry fire will it save the firing pin?

  • @rjg02005

    @rjg02005

    The roll pin that retains the firing pin is the only component that I've heard can become worn by dry fire. Snap caps should extend its life because they slow the firing pin down before it impacts the retaining pin.

    I just replaced the rear sight on my PCR with a red dot, so I can hit the side of a barn without having to be inside it. It is now a bit less perfect for concealed carry, but if I ever need to draw it in anger, at least I can hit something with it. Still feels perfect in my hand, even with an extra ounce or two on top. Why an aluminum frame? Because plastic guns should be water pistols.

    CZ hasn't been consistent with their naming. For example: My 75D Compact is sometimes marked as "PCR" and my P-01 is sometimes marked as "75D Compact." There are also compact railed frames in steel, non-railed compact frames in DA/SA, and aluminum railed frames with the omega trigger... and I'm sure a few other permutations. I've had positive experiences with all of the CZs I've used.

    Are the slides and barrels interchangeable

  • @rjg02005

    @rjg02005

    Barrels are interchangeable. Slides are slightly different in the sights, PCR has the chamber loaded indicator, and P-01 has longer rails. Slides will function on each lower but won't match up cosmetically.

    I've never experienced one breaking myself, but it's probably a good idea to change them every few thousand rounds (I have no clue what CZ recommends). It's not hard to replace, but it's a more involved job than replacing springs in something like a Glock.

    Amazon. "Cool grips - royal color". About 1/2 as expensive as the VZ. They don't feel quite as good as the VZs (p-01) but that's subjective and not a deal breaker for me.

    Haha. Yeah, I hear you. Both are beautiful guns, even with a bit of wear. The 75 compact D was bought used and in okay condition, so I wasn't too worried about messing up the looks. I brought the P01 to a class back in '16 and it got its first scratch. It was a relief. Now they're both carried and shot as often as I can.
