Putin's invasion of Ukraine has prompted many countries to consider joining NATO for their own protection. But historic conflict over Cyprus between Greece and Turkey, and their economic dependence on Russia make it very unlikely to join any time soon.

    You forgot to mention that the US (president at the time) and NATO, actually encouraged the Turkish invasion of 1974, in part due to concerns that the UK would've given up on its military bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia. That would have left Cyprus more exposed to the USSR's sphere of influence. Also despite how the ethnic groups of Cyprus separated after the unofficial division, the Republic of Cyprus, "on the south", where the Greek Cypriots where displaced to, is still the same country founded in 1960 (that was supposed to represent both communities). These events left a lot of Cypriots, not only the Greek Cypriots, sceptical and sometimes resentful against NATO, across the political spectrum. A full NATO member launched a full scale invasion against a much, much weaker opponent, twice.

    The Greek word for union is "enosis" stressed on the first vowel "e" E-nosis , the final "s" is often silent but not a biggie issue. The video downplays NATO’s role in the invasion. NATO governments had agreed to the “Acheson Plan” which said Greece would overthrow the Cypriot government and conquer the island (thus becoming NATO territory) and Turkey would be given some parts. This is exactly what happened in 1974, with the NATO-controlled Greek Dictatorship supporting EOKA B’s coup, but because the Cypriot President survived the attack and because the Greek Junta fell the legitimate Cypriot government returned to the southern part. Today, Cypriots blame NATO for the invasion and the vast majority opposes it.

    There are still several British military bases on Cyprus as well (Akrotiri and Dhekelia), they even have their own police. And it's not like all this rather large territories surrounded by fence, you can legally enter there if you would like to (except the bases itself). So the island has 4 types of territories now - Republic of Cyprus, occupied northern territories, UN buffer zone territories, territories of British bases.

    1:58 the map shown here has been the status quo since 1974, not prior to that. Throughout the Ottoman period and British period, the Turks of the island were scattered all across. According to British government statistics in 1960 81.14% of the island were Greek and 18.86% of the island were Turkish. For the north to become fully Turkish about 200.000 Greeks were forced to leave their homes by the Turkish army, and 6.000 Turks from the south moved to the north.

    FACT CORRECTION: Even after the Ottomans arrived the majority of the island still spoke greek. The concept of "Greek Cypriot" and "Turkish Cypriot" didn't exist until the British came (Divide and conquer). The main divide was along religious lines (Tax played a big role in many conversions to Islam and also the reason the Cypriot Church is so rich) but many could speak both languages and there were mixed Christian and Muslim villages. Even when the island became a republic the "Greek Cypriots" made up 80% of the population and "Turkish Cypriots" 18% (2% other). In the beginning of the video (1:40) you emphasise that the island "WAS" majority Greek speaking - At any point in time this is factually incorrect. Side note: The Cypriot language does have the characteristics that it could be considered its own language and not just a Greek dialect. The language incorporates a lot of ancient Greek, Italian, and Turkish/Arabic words. But for political reasons I don't think anyone would ever seek to try get Cypriot recognised as it's own language.

    What? I'm Cypriot and I don't think I speak a different language from the Greek mainlanders...nor that our vocabulary is such extremely different from other regions of Greece. Pontic Greek, Cretan Greek, Ionian Island Greek etc are all dialectical different as Cypriot Greek. Even more so, Cypriots participated in all straggles of the Greek people, beginning with the Greek war of Independence. So, I don't want to thinking that you made this comment out of some agenda but you misinformed people trying to pursue a narrative that Cyprus was something "different"...more fluid and more exotic than the rest of the Greek speaking areas when it was actually a very ordinary Greek speaking land with its own specific characteristics. I feel kinda insulted by your comment.

    @paris-panda

    @@vanmars5718 I know. Most people don't realise it, but technically it has the characteristics that would allow it to be classified as its own language. A good example of a language that seems almost indistinguishable from its "parent" language is Scots, which is considered its own language. Cypriot has more deviations from dialects like the Cretan's. Examples "ornitha" is an ancient Greek remnant and "kanjelo" is an Italian word. The Cypriot language has a LOT of these amalgamations that go unnoticed. I'm sorry you feel insulted by the comments but I didn't make up the technicalities of what differences are needed for a "dialect" to be considered its own language... You're not alone in your thinking and your comments are the perfect illustration why I said even though it technically could be classified as its own language, politically it will never happen.

As long as British forces are on Cyprus the island is pretty safe, as any attack on the country would likely result in a response from the UK, a vastly more powerful country.

    Cyprus is not officially in NATO but in reality has troops from NATO member states. At the northern half, Turkey has an active military personnel of around 40k soldiers (mainland Turks). On the southern part, Greece has around 1k soldiers (mainland Greeks). Apart from that, there are 2 British military bases in Cyprus which belong to the UK and are therefore not considered Cypriot land due to the Treaty of Establishment in 1960. There are 3.5k active British troops in a 100 sq miles area. Those bases have been and are also used for NATO operations in the Middle East. To conclude, although, the Republic of Cyprus is not officially a member of NATO, there are 3 types of personnel which belong to the alliance.

    Completely untrue. For starters the Republic of Cyprus completely funds the small Greek troops there with the intend to protect some zones too from the Turks. The Republic also provides electricity to the bases of Britain and also to the occupying's Turks because Greeks are in enclaves there. All 5 armies in the island including the UN forces and the Cypriot National Guard (the largest by far force on the island) are entirely relied on the republic. If Cyprus stopped feeding the British they would die the next day by starvation.

Cyprus is NOT Greece's territory! We are independent since 1960 and we have our own flag that you used plenty of times. The appropriate thing is to use that flag to show the south despite that internationally the whole island is acknowledged as the Republic of Cyprus. After 1960, Greece's and Turkey's flags aren't the ones to officially represent Cyprus, Cyprus's flag is - and let's hope one day we will be able to see the flag waving in the north as well.

The only problem is that Turkey illegally occupies the north part of the country since 1974 and imported a lot of Turkish settlers there to influence the island and change its demographics. What is been asked for decades is for Turkey to stop the illegal occupation of the north and remove its troops so Cyprus can be united again. • @dimitrispvoice133

    @@Downtimelegion Let's not mix things up. I only made a comment on the fact that Greece's flag shouldn't be used alone to represent the free parts of Cyprus but also Cyprus' flag or just Cyprus' flag since it has been independent since 1960. There are many things that us Cypriots try to do in order to adapt to this new circumstances we live in. Back in the 50s, YES, Cyprus should be part of Greece since it has been a greek speaking island for thousands of years and it was(and still is) mainly consisted by Greeks. Or even as an independent nation, Cyprus should be considered a Greek oriented country with a Turkish minority who could live and cooperate together with the greek Cypriots... that ofcourse if the British, Turkey and the then Greece's junta didn't screw things up. Today though, we need to adapt to the new reality in order to achieve peace. Turkey invaded in 1974 and the whole wide world codemns or should codemn it for it. They've been trying to change the country's demographics by importing more Turks to the island and they influence the north more and more each year, every day. They should be codemned for that as well... but what can Cyprus do? Throw all the Turks to the sea, act violently because Turkey is also violent?...We''ll only get more wars and bloodshed. What is needed to do is finally try putting things behind and being united for once, for peace, and if Turkey is still ignoring these calls, it will only make itself look bad internationally. Cyprus has always been a greek populated island, it's common sense by now. But it's also independent and is seeking for peace and a better future for all its citizens. Also, we kinda got used to being independent...our language might be greek but it uses a different dialect and far more ancient greek words than modern day Greece does that sometimes Greeks really don't understand us. So it makes sense to be on our own without ofcourse forgetting our greek ancestry and roots, that will never happen. Let's agree on one thing though, the Turkish troops need to like...LEAVE..., no idea what the f they want in our nation, Turkey is still trying to get the whole of Cyprus but they won't suceed.
