Cylinder Head is Back from the Machine Shop

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The daily driver 1975 Jaguar XJ6 cylinder head is back from the machine shop and it looks nice! Now it's time to start preparing it to go back on the block. I managed to get a hold of some J-B Weld so let's see if it can fix my oil leaks.

    JB Weld is great for this. Also as a tip to clean holes in the head I use various various sizes of round wire brushes from gun cleaning kits. I put them on a drill and use brake cleaner spray in the hole as the brush turns in the really gunky ones. They come in nylon, brass or steel so there is one for each application based on the material...

    Good to see things moving along. Nice with the jb weld, that you can sand it. You can use it to fill the pits. You can scrape off the excess before it sets, for less sanding. I like it, it holds up great.

    Hi Adam, before refitting make sure the holes that cylinder head studs pass through are really clean and no debris can fall off when installing , I always used a reamer for doing this. Also the same for the studs, making sure no loose rust can fall off and sit on the gasket. If you're using the chrome dome nuts make sure the threads are tapped out and do not bottom out on the studs giving a false torque reading, I've had this happen. Hope this helps 👍👍

    Beautiful and meticulous work as always Adam. The regular JB Weld should work just fine...the intake manifold on my car l repaired 2 years ago with it has held up fine...does not get nearly as hot as an exhaust manifold. Your shop is beautiful....those look like IKEA bookcases? Look forward to seeing how it works out once you re-install the head.

    Hi Adam, I think you've done a great job with great preparation, so it should be fine. I've used JB weld before and never had a problem as long as everything was cleaned first. It's not easy to find someone local, near on impossible, to do a more in-depth specialist repair, and of course there's always a chance they could have made it worse! 👍🧐🎩

    @@LivingWithAClassic :Hello, I've just found your channel. Gr8 stuff,I'm an avid Jaguar fan since childhood. My first love was a '71 E type V12 series 3. I'd love to have one in signal red,any year would be fine for me. If you don't mind me asking, where are you located? Sounds like somewhere in the tropics. Anyway your xj should run like a champ once you're through. They're gr8 cars, what kills them is lack of or poor maintenance. I've worked on Jaguars in the past and with good maintenance they're pretty bulletproof. You just have to take good care of them.

    Looking a good job. Just wondering whether applying the JB Weld to each flat section that has the repair area in it and then sanding the entire area flat, thereby hiding the spot repair and increasing the surface integrity of the repair. Only just recently found your channel, and currently catching up on earlier videos. Loving the quality.

    That epoxy putty you flaked off looked like old JB Weld. I tried it on a loose oil pan drain years ago and it leaked like a sieve. JB is great for a lot of things but just doesn't stick to oily surfaces no matter how much you try and prep. I think you will be revisiting this in a week or two, sorry. The best solution would be to drill out those screws, weld up the holes with aluminum, and retrofit hold-down plates. Best done with the head off but could be done in-situ if you can drive it to a welder.

  • @LivingWithAClassic

    @LivingWithAClassic

    The problem is that no welder here will weld in an old aluminum head. I don’t think it was JB weld since it’s hard to get here. It can’t be sold in this country and needs to be imported. I hope it will hold or atleast leak less

  • @Thomas63r2
    @Thomas63r23 жыл бұрын

    When originally made there was no expectation that it would still be on the road this many years later. JB Weld is legendary - but I only use it on assembled engines to avoid disassembly. With a disassembled head I would properly weld defects in the cylinder head. The bane of old engine designs like the XK is indifferent maintenance and service by owners who really don’t care about problems for the future owner. Clearly your engine has been run for a long time with high mineral content tap water rather than a mix of a quality coolant and distilled water. The poor design with the pass through head studs amplifies this issue.

  • @bentleynut1648
    @bentleynut16483 жыл бұрын

    Adam. It’s a shame you didn’t spend just a bit more time sanding the jb weld. It would not have taken much longer to get a flat finish using a flat block. Stick with it and push yourself to get a great result rather than just an ok result. I love your work and enthusiasm. Great channel and thanks for contributing.

    I must have missed something. Why are there 6 holes drilled into your cylinder head? Forgive me for asking. It is just that I know very little about cars and I can't understand why there would be 6 holes in it in the first place. When to my ignorant eye they do not appear to be part of the casting. Obviously some absolute automotive genius has done that and it is just far beyond my compression. Can someone please explain it to this mere mortal?

    Why have the 2nd & 5th pairs of stud holes been threaded - surely not by the machine shop to secure the head before skimming? A procedure never used by the shop that skimmed the hundreds of Jag heads for me over the 20 years I worked on Jags. Don’t forget both lifting bracket should be on the intake side. Check that the bracket mounting studs are longer. Four different length studs were used - 7off pt no. C29033, 3off C29035, 3off C28073 & 1off C42355. Don’t forget to clean both block and head faces with solvent cleaner prior to fitting. Apply small amount of oil to each thread. Then, most important, initially torque all head nuts to about 40 ft lbs, then once all are at 40, IN ONE UNINTERUPTED PULL increase torque to 54 ft lbs to avoid false readings due to stiction . Good luck. PS Never experienced coolant leaks from head nuts. Something has to be wrong with assembly to cause that issue (wrong stud lengths or faulty torquing).
