Cycling Japan: Northern Honshu and Hokkaido // World Bicycle Touring Episode 45

After leaving Matsumoto, we continued across the Japanese Alps and arrived on the west coast. We mostly followed the coastline of the Sea of Japan as we traveled north through Honshu before taking a ferry to Hokkaido. We took our time exploring some national parks in Hokkaido before ending our bike tour of Japan in Sapporo.
Apart from some intense traffic during Golden Week, this part of our route featured lots of idyllic riding and beautiful scenery. We spent a little over two months in Japan and had a fantastic time - there is so much to discover and we'd love to return for more bike touring someday!

    I ALWAYS warn people about 'Golden Week' happenstance. Traffic, crowds, closed stores/accommodations (they want to go on holiday too) , full parks (which at times can be fun). Yes, those are tactically placed cement caltrops to prevent ocean erosion. Was wondering what you might encounter in road closures since the 1/1 earthquake. Surprised you only ran into one. +1 Japan's infrastructure upkeep! Kaiyo maru replica, nice!🚲

    Japan's population is decreasing due to the declining birthrate. The rural areas of Hokkaido are particularly characterized by many depopulated areas. Anyway, I'm glad I didn't encounter a big brown bear😊😊😊😊 The towns of Esashi, Yakumo, and Suttsu on the Sea of Japan side of Hokkaido are This is a road that I often use by car.

  • @RollingExistence

    @RollingExistence

    2 ай бұрын

    Bike theft (and theft in general) is very rare in Japan and we were never too worried about leaving them unlocked outside for a short period of time. We would still try to park them so that we could see them through a window, and we did carry a lock for cases where we'd be away from them for a few hours.

    Wild camping in Japan is quite easy and safe, but it's not explicitly legal . We don't film strangers very often, in most situations we don't feel it's appropriate. We met many wonderful people in Japan but filming our interactions with them and putting it on KZread just isn't something we do.

    As far as cycling goes, definitely Shikoku. The coastline was spectacular and there was relatively low traffic. It's more rural though, we would definitely recommend seeing Tokyo and Kyoto as well. We'd like to ride more of Hokkaido at some point as well, we barely scratched the surface of the island and we've heard the northern areas are fantastic.
