Cycling Japan: Northern Honshu and Hokkaido // World Bicycle Touring Episode 45
After leaving Matsumoto, we continued across the Japanese Alps and arrived on the west coast. We mostly followed the coastline of the Sea of Japan as we traveled north through Honshu before taking a ferry to Hokkaido. We took our time exploring some national parks in Hokkaido before ending our bike tour of Japan in Sapporo.
Apart from some intense traffic during Golden Week, this part of our route featured lots of idyllic riding and beautiful scenery. We spent a little over two months in Japan and had a fantastic time - there is so much to discover and we'd love to return for more bike touring someday!

Thanks for posting, I was missing your videos - best cycle touring channel on KZread in my opinion & you definitely deserve more subscribers!
Everytime I watch videos of cycling in Japan I get this ache. It's been 5 years and I still have done nothing with all the video I shot because I get sad whenever I try to edit it.😂
The scenery and mellow music made me think of a Miyazaki film.
I love the nature in Japan, what a beautiful place !!!
Thanks for showing us how beautiful Japan is. I really enjoyed this, cheers!
What a route. If only we had the time to follow. 2 countries and all those miles and smiles. Amazing. 👍
was getting worried about you folks, good to see you back
Layover in Germany on way to Alaska …. quite the flight. Looking forward to the next phase . Always great to see you two.
Thank you for sharing your impressions with us! It's very interesting how the rural Japan looks like
So beautiful, northern Japan!
Wait a sec... layover in Germany onto Alaska? That's kinda the wrong way LOL... I would love to cycle thru Japan like you did in the future... Love watching your video
I cycled along your gpx track in Thailand from Phuket to the golden Triangle. It was amazing! I left the track in Laos to get into north Vietnam and Hanoi and will meet it again in Ha Thin Till Da Nang! Thank you so much. It was very very helpful! Alexander

Another great video. I don't know how you guys do it, how you keep your spirits up in those rainy days, but you did it. And welcome back to N. Am., can't wait to see what's next.
Those ravens were always stealing my food when I lived in Hokkaido and went camping! Great video, enjoy Alaska!
Great series, thanks for taking us along.
Beautiful shot at 12:35 🍵

Thanks for the suggestion! We've been thinking about doing some retrospective videos about bigger regions so good to know that folks would be interested in that!
What a great video - Hokkaido looks beautiful! A cycle trip there is definitely on my bucket list.
Cool stuff, thanks for sharing!
Great video. Tnx and good luck
Another great video. What a fantastic country, would love to visit one day.
Thanks for taking us along in your final segment in Japan. I can't wait to see the videos in Alaska. I have thought about the Prudhoe Bay to lower 48 ride and thinking the logistics might be daunting. You all are awesome!
A new episode, finally!!! ❤❤
Very happy to find you taking us along through Japan . I love to discover other places in the world . See you hopefully here soon again . . Greetings from France . ☀️☀️

great series! looking for your next plan
Здорово !👍
Very beautiful and calming film, I can feel the breeze through the screen. Thank you. The topless hat (Da Brim, right?) looks nice, I didn't know such a thing.

Glad you enjoyed it! And yes, it's Da Brim!
I ALWAYS warn people about 'Golden Week' happenstance. Traffic, crowds, closed stores/accommodations (they want to go on holiday too) , full parks (which at times can be fun). Yes, those are tactically placed cement caltrops to prevent ocean erosion. Was wondering what you might encounter in road closures since the 1/1 earthquake. Surprised you only ran into one. +1 Japan's infrastructure upkeep! Kaiyo maru replica, nice!🚲
Nice video i love it
i cycle in japan for nearly 1 year but in same roots .nice video.
Finally
Japan's population is decreasing due to the declining birthrate. The rural areas of Hokkaido are particularly characterized by many depopulated areas. Anyway, I'm glad I didn't encounter a big brown bear😊😊😊😊 The towns of Esashi, Yakumo, and Suttsu on the Sea of Japan side of Hokkaido are This is a road that I often use by car.
This was great. Enjoyed the ride! Having been to Japan on business over the years... I know how daunting Shinjuku Station can be (without large luggage).
Very brautiful place
I would of got my bike over that gate & boogied on. LOL love this vlog. New follower. Keep it up.

We've done that a few times and it almost always works out... but the one time we did it in Japan, a bridge was completely destroyed from an earthquake and we had to backtrack :(. No video of that though, it was in 2018 before we filmed our trips.
좋아 좋아 멋지십니다.
We feed crows outdated bagels at home, they fly away with them like there feathers 😂 sorry for your loss.
❤❤❤
Damn...you guys are doing what 90 plus percent of others cant do. Must be extreemly tiring and fustrating at times. Im done after 10 miles😂
I wrote myself on your channel, I'm a Brazilian cycle traveler 🇧🇷🇧🇷🌡️🇧🇷🌡️🌡️
How great human body is!!
We missed you ❤️❤️❤️🦦🦦
this is nice! what time of the year were you there?
I'm thinking about getting into bike touring
فيديوجميل جدا رائع جدا❤❤❤😊
👍
How can you bike consistently without any pain in the groin / rear area? Should I do bike fitting?
長野の自宅前を通過したんですね!・・・おもてなししたかったです。🤩 日本は北海道を除き交通量が多く道が狭いのでサイクリングするには思ったほど 条件が良くないです、ガッカリされなければ良いのですが・・・・😥
Thanks for sharing, it looks like an amazing trip. Did you feel comfortable leaving your bikes in front of convenience stores/restaurants? Did you use locks or just keep an eye out?
@RollingExistence

Bike theft (and theft in general) is very rare in Japan and we were never too worried about leaving them unlocked outside for a short period of time. We would still try to park them so that we could see them through a window, and we did carry a lock for cases where we'd be away from them for a few hours.
Which way would you take from Tokyo to Aomori city but passing through nagano prefecture and Ginzan onsen? I'm slowly planning my backpacking trip but I still have a lot to organize :)
incredrible! where you used to take a bath?

Traffic in Japan is a bit dangerous for cyclists! Good luck and health !

Is it easy to wild camp in Japan?
Well yea..Wonderful nature..Japan is going on my list. Is it easy to wild camp? How come there almost no human encounters in this film ?
@RollingExistence
4 ай бұрын
Wild camping in Japan is quite easy and safe, but it's not explicitly legal . We don't film strangers very often, in most situations we don't feel it's appropriate. We met many wonderful people in Japan but filming our interactions with them and putting it on KZread just isn't something we do.

What was your favourite place in Japan ?

As far as cycling goes, definitely Shikoku. The coastline was spectacular and there was relatively low traffic. It's more rural though, we would definitely recommend seeing Tokyo and Kyoto as well. We'd like to ride more of Hokkaido at some point as well, we barely scratched the surface of the island and we've heard the northern areas are fantastic.
They are indeed breakwater contraptions.

Did you fly from Japan to Alaska via Germany?
@RollingExistence

Yes, unfortunately that was the cheapest way to get from Japan to Alaska. We had a really long layover in Frankfurt so we got to explore the city a bit.
You must be home now with time to edit. Lots of work isn't it!
